Default Mail order fruit - rec needed

I want to order some great fruit for xmas. I'd like to get citrus and
possible pears, and am more interested in best taste and less interested in
really pretty looking but not-so-tasty fruit (e.g. Harry and David). Cost is
not an object (OK, not MUCH of an object!). Any recs will be greatly
appreciated!

Epinions.com doesn't have too much nice to say about Harry and David
when it comes to fruit.

I can tell you first hand that it's seriously overpriced *poor quality*
product. I've received Harry and David fruit selections as gifts at least a
dozen times, none were anything special, certainly not worth the price paid...
their fruit is no better than what you can buy at a local stupidmarket for 1/10
the price... mostly you pay for the shipping and heavy duty packaging... the
box is worth more than the fruit.

At $22/5lbs citus +shipping they are just as pricey as Harry and David. I'm
sorry but I'm not going to choose to pay $2.50 for one steenkin' orange... just
last week I bought a 5lb bag of navels for $3.99 at the local stupidmarket,
every one a juicy beauty.

Well, seeing as Christmas is the perfect time for citrus, you're probably
going to have some pretty good choices
There are two that spring to mind immediately: Poinsettia Farms and Davidson
of Dundee; both in Florida. If you order from Poinsettia, make sure to try
the Honeybell Baby Bells...they are so juicy you need a handful of napkins
to eat them! The marmalade is wonderful too.
Davidson of Dundee has the most wonderful sweet, juicy navel oranges. I
recieved a "champagne chest" as a gift last season, which had not only some
of the most delicious oranges ever, but grapefruit (very delicious and
sweet), marmalade, orange blossom honey, pecans, and these amazing little
citrus juice candies. I've ordered a few for gifts myself this year.
I've recieved a gift box of Royal Riviera pears from Harry & David, and they
are very tasty, but wayyyy overpriced IMHO. Instead, check out Mission
Orchards ( I think the website is just www.missionorchards.com ). Much more
reasonable, and I've never had a problem with their quality at all. The
Crown comice pears are my favorite, but YMMV.

Not a specific recommendation, but when you're searching for a seller
it's best to get one that is an actual grower, rather than a middleman.
The fruit will be cheaper and fresher.

One of the nice types of citrus you can get are Minneola tangelos, also
called honeybells. Unfortunately, their Florida season (they are best
from there) really begins in January. It's possible you could find a
grower that would be able to ship by Christmas, but I wouldn't count on
it.

The grower I deal with is Brown's Grove http://brownsgrove.com a family
run grove and on-line dealer. Their prices are hard to beat, $40 for
full bushel of most of their citrus varieties.

Yep. Pretty good price for shipped fruit. Obviously cheaper if you live
in FL and can go by a fruit stand.

Definitely our favorite. Have ordered from them for years and
with Florida losing much of their crop, this may be
one of the few options around.
