But then you'd be observing me observing you.

Actually, as much as I like to eat, I find it disconcerting to watch
other people eat. It doesn't really have anything to do with the polite-
ness of their table manners - they could be as genteel as it's possible
to be. When I eat with others, I'm not really focused on their eating,
but on the conversation, companionship and so on.

Not sure if the ASCII shortcuts work on a Mac, but worth a try!

Alt Key + 0188 = ¼
Alt + 0189 = ½
Alt + 0190 = ¾

It comes from using an ASCII extended value, I too get those
displays when I view such in a Fixed pitch font (Terminal).
Normally I just write a fraction as:

One forth = 1/4
One half = 1/2
Three forths = 3/4

and so on. That way 1/4 will look like 1/4 instead of ¬,
thich if view in Times New Roman the last character will
look like the "Tab" character.

Though it would be nice if font designers would create the
same values for all fonts, then if a different character was
needed one could use a dingbat. For instance I have found
on the WWW/Usenet a font of nothing but ampersands. Make
sense?

I'm not sure it is that, you may have an external addon for
Free Agent which changes it. Agent Version 2.0 does not
change my fractions, nor does Windows.

Also the problem is the ASCII character code:

032 [space] 048 0 064 @ 080 P 096 ` 112 p
033 ! 049 1 065 A 081 Q 097 a 113 q

046 . 062 > 078 N 094 ^ 110 n 126 ~
047 / 063 ? 079 O 095 _ 111 o

If people were to limit their writing to just the codes
above then the text would be read and understood by all
without having to switch to another proggie/font.

Speaking of spices and such (were we speaking of
them? lol) I just got my new Penzey's order. Free
sample of English style Prime Rib Rub. Celery seed
dominating it.
Also bought for the first time their Chicken Soup
Base. Anyone know if this needs to be kept in the
fridge after opening? The jar doesn't say. I'm
just too lazy to call Penzey's right now. It
smells pretty strong to me. Any opinions?

Be aware that even if they work for you, you already know what you wrote
and have the recipe already. It needs to work for others to be useful in
communication, and these don't work for everybody. Your recipes and
information will turn into garbage for those few of us who don't have the
same hardware and software as most people. Why not just write 1/2 as 1/2?

Yup... I broiled (not grilled) lobster tails served with brown butter (I
forgo the idea of lobster bisque) the other night for dinner. If you think
I wasted time on a potato or salad you are sadly mistaken

It isn't the ones that send, it's the ones that receive them. It's not
possible for you to test other people's newsreaders with your own.

Don't use them.

I think that might be a bit of a stretch.

People are obese, primarily out of choice. Granted, its unfair that
some of us have the genetic make up that allows us to eat a higher
number of calories than others, but at the end of the day, people make
choices.

It's not even like people can argue that they're obese becasue fast
food is the most accessible food option in thier lives given the recent
push to get healthier options in the industry.

I guess it's a moot point for me too... so far all of the
"real" fractions others posted in this thread have shown up
on my 1.93 just fine - but after posting a recipe with
converted fractions (copy/paste from Word) a few years ago
and being reamed when the ¼ and ½ translated into 1, I'm
still majorly gun shy.

make the ° symbol! Tee-Hee. I'm so excited! For years I've always used
the * hoping all would know what I meant. Thanks Pixmaker!

OK folks. . . all I tried to do was to pass along some information
that worked for me and for many many others. YMMV!

If y'all are so antsy about them, fine. Don't use them.

No skin off my nose!

And doesn't work for some, that being the point. 1/4 works for
everybody.

Probably for most people, actually. And all I was trying to do was to let
people know that some of us have hardware and software that turn those
characters into something other than intended.

All my recipes use the 1/2 symbol. I don't like looking
at the plain old 1/2, etc. However when I post recipes I copy
them from my files into the message and then go through
and change all the symbols to 1/2, etc., so people can
read them. It's not a big deal to do this as there aren't
usually all that many of them. It only takes a minute.

I think super size me was a great movie. I have a 14 month old and was
feeding him fast food 3-4 times per week, that is teaching him bad eatinb
habits. Now if we go to fast food instead of fries I get him the alternate
choice fruit. Amazingly he likes that better. This movie is long over due.
