I worry about using plastic; the hot coffee on the plastic may cause
plasticization poison . Aluminum has it dangers also, according to
the alzheimers association.

And I LOVE that cup of ONE coffee in the morning. Help anybody? I can
spend about $25.00. They're out there, I'm just afraid to use them.
Convince me it's OK to use plastic or aluminum and I'm ready for my
caffeine jump!

Instant coffee?

Wal-Mart nearby? If so I got a stove top percolator, which
I bought there, useful for when the power goes out as I have
gas, and I don't mean beans. Then make as necessary, as I
recall mine was $9.99 ? You'll have to go to the camping
section as that's where I got mine.

Clean hanky, never been used, or cheese cloth? Put some
rounds in the cloth, put it bound up in a pot/pan and put
water in it and boil. You can call it cea if you want or
coea, whatever you want to call it, you will be making it
cheaper than buying a new pot/maker.

As the old New England proverb goes:

Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without.

The plastic used in coffee filter holders is safe. If you still worry, run a
few gallons of boiling water thru it to remove the nasties before first use.
You can get a Melita filter holder for a modest price, and the filters are
not too expensive. This is by far the best way to make small quantities of
coffee.

ANother option is something you see in Central America but not much here. It
is a small wooden frame holding a small cotton sack. Put the grounds in the
sack, the cup under the sack, and pour in the water. Once in a while wash
the sack.

By a four cup coffee maker, and just make one cup. Most of them are
assuming an 8 oz cup, so you want more than one cup anyway. Also, if you
have an occasional friend over, this will allow you to make coffee for
them also. Look for a coffee maker that has an adjustment for amount of
coffee made. This will allow for more time for brewing so the coffee
doesn't come out too weak. I've asked Santa Claus for a four cup coffee
maker for work. I have a couple of cups at home, but have started to
crave more coffee (but not much) once I get to work.

I bought a four cup Krups this w/e for $19.99. The basket is plastic
though.

My 85 year old grandfather drinks 4-5 ten cup pots of coffee a day and
has done so for round about seventy years. Up until the 70s they used
an aluminum percolator since it's been a Mister Coffee with a plastic
basket. So far no alzheimers and no plastic poisoning.

You can find a glass french press with a stainless steel plunger in the
uder $25 price range.
