Default I only eat normal stuff

Phase two.

A friend sent us a Cristmas package from Maine this year. One of the
items included was a jar cinnamon basil honey. Cinnamon basil honey?
WTF?

I only eat normal stuff, I said to D; what am I to do with such a
concoction?

Even as I spoke, it dawned on me that mixing a dollop of the
concoction with soy sauce and ground chiles (chipotles come to mind)
might yield a decent glaze for pork or chicken on the grill.

Oh, come on Michael... take the big step and eat it on a
breakfast bisquit. Let us know how your gourmet honey fares
with you.

Hmmmm... what an interesting conumdrum (sp? too early this morning!). My
first thought was yeah, that is a bit weird but then I thought of the
marinade that I make for both beef and pork - Teriyaki Sauce, honey, 5-Spice
powder and sometimes some Italian herbs... so yeah, cinnamon and basil could
work. I'm thinking it would be great drizzled over breakfast sausages too!

You know what? You're right. It's too weird. Send it to me and I'll
dispose of it "properly". LOL

Most likely means the hives were set in a field of basil... bees gathered basil
pollen, like when you see alphalfa honey, that honey doesn't contain bits of
alphalfa... can't imagine the bee keeper blended the honey with fresh basil.
And often particular pollens will imbue honey with a cinnamon spicyness...
there are various basils, one variety I've planted tasted of cinnamon,
especially it's flowers. I seriously doubt the bee keeper tainted pure honey
with cinnamon.

Oh you remind me.... 1985, living in NYC with my then-husband... We
had brought a small Italian coffeemaker from Switzerland (you know the
kind, you put water in the bottom part, ground coffee in the middle
part, with the heat the water condensates, goes through the coffee and
becomes liquid again in the top part). We were sharing an apartment in
Brooklyn. Our roommate invited an old friend of hers with his wife. I
cooked (roommate hated cooking, I love it). At the end of the meal I
offered coffee and said "Do you want American filter coffee or Italian
coffee?". The guy answered, serious as can be: "Normal coffee, we're
normal people"....

My friend Cheryl has bee hives. She makes cinnamon basil honey with
honey, cinnamon, cinnamon basil (or lemon basil and a little bourbon. I
have never tried cinnamon basil or lemon basil, so I have no idea what
these herbs taste like.

I've found that I can usually imagine what stuff will taste like, and
that thinking in these terms helps me to cook.

I've also found that when I go to a fancy-shmancy restaurant, they often
have combination that I'd never have thought of. Like honey and basil.
Or, until I heard of it, raspberry-chipotle.

I'd give it a try. Basil tastes somewhat like anise, and licorice is
usually sweet. And sweet stuff often tastes good with cinnamon.
Cinnamon and licorice? Sounds like an old-fashioned penny candy.

Hmmm....Maybe on top of an english muffin with cream cheese?
