Phone Cards Connect Us With Wounded
Yellow ribbons tied around trees and red, white and blue stickers on the backs SUVs saying "Support our Troops" are things that make civilians feel good but do nothing for the men and women actually in uniform. So please consider the following: The number ONE request at Walter Reed hospital is phone cards. The government doesn't pay long distance phone charges and these wounded soldiers are rationing their calls home. Many will be there throughout the holidays. Really support our troops -- Send phone cards of any amount to: Medical Family Assistance Center Walter Reed Medical Center 6900 Georgia Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20307-5001 They say they need an "endless" supply of these -- any amount even $5 is greatly appreciated. Wal-Mart has good prices on AT&T cards, Sam's Club is even better, if you are a member. Please pass this portion on, copy and paste it into your e-mail, and send to everyone you know. |

Actually, there are a few 1000 minute ones gathering dust in my desk drawer right now. They go out first thing in the morning mail :-) Thanks for the tip. What was it? You never know unless... Oh, no, I was going to ask someone to pick up some cards for me as I'm laid up at the moment. I spoke before I thought, yeah dummy, everyone has a lot of money to throw around this time of year ... I'm going to look online for maybe the post office to send cards once I know this is a legit request. Obviously I would have repaid immediately. I didn't mean to be vague. Sorry. nancy |

Happy holidays. nancy According to Snopes, Walter Reed is already swamped with cards -- this was one of those good ideas that got out of hand. "Though at one time long distance calling cards might have been the 'number ONE request' of soldiers lying wounded at the Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, DC, since the advent of the e-mail pleading for them, the Medical Family Assistance Center at that treatment center has received thousands of them, which amounts to far, far more than the patients recuperating there can use at the moment." "The Red Cross office at Walter Reed still welcomes cash donations, but on the understanding that such funds can be used for the benefit of all soldiers, not just the ones being treated at Walter Reed. Those wishing to make such gifts are asked to mail their checks to: American Red Cross, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, 6900 Georgia Avenue NW, Building 2, 3rd Floor, Room 3E05, Washington, DC, 20307." http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/charity/phonecards.asp I didn't get as far as Snopes did with my own checking, but the WRAMC webmaster did send me the phone number for the Family Assistance Center: 1-866-546-1310. He said he was personally going to send $10,000 worth of phone cards to Walter Reed. I figure all the good souls who heard this will determine to send as many cards as they can possibly afford to help out with this wonderful effort. The lazy ones will decide that someone else has already taken care of it. Nevertheless, after this message has gone around the Internet plus being announced on a national program, I imagine Walter Reed is going to have mail problems. Plus, (the cynic is speaking now) I can see a lot of these cards being stolen and/or sold by individuals who get to handle all this phone card mail. The cards, after all, have no owner and are as good as cash. Janet |

If you don't earmark the check for a certain use it will go to the Red Cross
general fund. That came out in interviews after Sept 11. All donations for the Red Cross unless given for a specific purpose are put in the general fund and distributed by headquarters as they see fit. This means your money could go to make TV commercials or to pay salaries or anything else they want to use it for. As you can see the Red Cross is NOT one of my favorite charities. We are a military family and in my experience they have not ever functioned as most people think they do. Although I do understand they rise to the occasion during floods, earthquakes etc and will give them credit for that but they are not as efficient in their dealings with the military as they should be., In fact I can only think of one instance where they were useful. When my son was in Korea my Father in law died and they did notify his commander in a timely manner. and he was able to come home. Unfortunately all my other dealings with them were not as good. When a few years after my FIL's death, my own Father died, my son was never notified and at that time he was stationed in Kentucky only 200 miles away. We talked to him so he knew but the Army needed that official notification to arrange leave and no matter how many times we called the Red Cross reminding them of that they told us they would get to it in due time - To this day they still haven't done it. Going back ever farther, when that same son was a baby he became critically ill and nearly died. The hospital called the Red Cross so they could arrange for my husband to come to where we were (we had been visiting my parents when he got sick). Luckily my husband's commander took his word and he was allowed to come to us anyway because the Red Cross didn't get around to notifying his base until almost a week had passed. By that time he had improved enough to be moved and he was already back in the care of our home base hospital. What a great idea! Many organizations give gifts to vetrans this time of year and to tell you the truth, I've never considered a simple phone card. It's inexpensive and will mean a lot to the recipient. Thanks for posting! sf Practice safe eating - always use condiments |

That's absolutely appalling, if it's true. That is because I believe they're also being paid a substance allowance. So if you're paid that, you pay something like $1.70 for breakfast and a couple of bucks for lunch/dinner at the mess hall. If you're not being paid that substance allowance your meals would be covered with a meal card. Goomba (who paid a whopping $3.35 to birth one kid in a military hospital.. that was for the meals) |

Well, that's hit a new low. I find this very upsetting. Add it to the fact that when a family wants to visit their wounded soldier, I understand the government provides funds for two nights then they are on their own. I'm sure they have to pay their own fares, too. Add that to the fact that soldiers have to pay their own fares to get home once they have been dropped off Stateside and you have to wonder why on earth we're in this mess and why we finished up with such a heartless group in DC. > > BTW, if you die of your wounds at any point after the MedEvac plane lifts > off from Baghdad, the Bush administration will not include you in the > combat death totals. When you count the ones who died at Weisbaden, Walter > Reed, etc, there are over 3,000 combat dead. I can believe it. This whole situation has me stark, staring, raving furious. Congratulations to the "religious right" for having their hearts in the right place and reelecting our fearless leader. Sorry, I normally *never* make any political comments here but this has me really upset. Dora |
