Default silicone oven gloves

I've just spent the better part of a day shopping with a friend for these
oven gloves which she assures me are 'the best' -- great for barbecuing and
using in the kitchen. Now I'd never seen or heard of them although have
seen the oven mitt.

Strange part is every store we went in -- and there were many -- were all
sold out.

Anyone have experience with them. Are they worth hunting down?

God I hate it when there's something out there that I a. have never seen or
b. have never even heard of............. especially when it has to do with
cooking!

I've had my eye on them for some time. I like the idea that they don't get
wet like fabric and can be cleaned in the dishwasher. It seems that my cloth
oven mitts get wet or I get food on them and they have to go into the
laundry.

The best price I have seen on them is at Costco. They have a package with
two mitts and two pot holder for about $24. I have seen the mitt selling
for upwards of $19 each and the pot holder for about $10- $12.

Yes - but this isn't a mitt - it's a glove (with fingers); and expensive
here in Canada. One glove retails for $20. A lot if you're buying two!

Not getting wet and scolding you can be an asset. You gotta hate when the pot
holder gets wet and you don't realize it until you get scolded by the thing that
is supposed to be protecting you form the heat.

My worst experience with a pot holder came early in my pursuit of cooking. I
went to get something hot out of the oven and used the pot holders that my wife
had been given by one of her students. I don't know what idiot came up with the
idea of making pot holders out of Phentex. It melts, and then it sticks to your
burned fingers. It makes as much sense as putting gasoline in a fire
extinguisher.

I have a mitt and I think I'd spring for the extra money to get gloves
instead. The mitt is great for somethings, but it's a little to hard to
get a good grip with for others. I'd like the option of both

Elaine -

I have used the mitts and pot holders for a while now, both in the kitchen
and outside grilling and barbequing. The pot holders are great. The mitt is
good as long as it is dry. If it gets a little oil on it, forget about
holding onto something. Especially something like the turkey fryer! Maybe
the gloves work better at that.

Worth having.

Gotta agree with ya Siobhan. I have the mitts and you really can't get
burned in 'em but I'd prefer gloves. Picking up something flat is a
bit of a problem.

Denise,

I'm not sure- I did a search on silicone gloves and it wasn't really
productive -

My guess is that this is not it. . Just a guess though!

I have a short pair for most use and an elbow length pair for high-temp
grilling. They are terrific - I can handle a very hot grill or pizza
stone with no problem. Or, handle raw or cooked meat (who needs turkey
lifters?). And they clean up in the dishwasher. A web search for Orka
mitts should find you plenty of sources.

Where I like to use them is outdoors taking stuff off the BGE. I find
that my pot holders are too small or too thin to handle roasting pans
off the grill. Or if I'm slow smoking, it's nice to have the gloves
to load and unload the food when I add charcoal. And as other have
said, cleaning them is a breeze.

They sell the "Ove Glove" at my Meijer Store. I don't think it is silicon.
It looks like some type of knit material.

'Zactly... and the pros change dish towels often, greasy/damp towels scald.
And those oven mitt thingies should be outlawed, they're dangerous, aside from
being highly unsanitary... I see someone using oven mitts at home I won't eat
there... any one who'd use an oven mitt may as well reuse a condom, several
times with several partners.

>Otherwise they are just poseuring pussies...

Hmm... a passel of drag queens... now that can be very scarry.

'Zactly... and the pros change dish towels often, greasy/damp towels scald.
And those oven mitt thingies should be outlawed, they're dangerous, aside from
being highly unsanitary... I see someone using oven mitts at home I won't eat
there... any one who'd use an oven mitt may as well reuse a condom, several
times with several partners.

Hmm... a passel of drag queens... now that can be very scarry.

after dropping more stuff using oven mitts I just started using towels...
