Actually, KFC is common for holidays in Japan. Since meats are very
expensive Japan, it is a 'special treat'.

sort of semi-related-

One of my girlfriends is Japanese and one of her family/cultural traditions is
to have a three day feast around New Years. They do all the cooking beforehand
- no work or cooking is to be done during this celebration (reheating is ok
apparently). The food is laid out buffet style and people come, nibble and
socialize. I can see KFC fitting right in to their custom. It's something
they don't have to cook. It's finger food- great for buffets.

Another requirement of Japanese New Year food is to be artistic. This
doesn't really apply to KFC... Now for Christmas, well, it cannot mean
much to Japanese anyway, can it? It is usually just a time to go eat
outside with friends.
