Need recommendation for great 2-slice toaster

I know this may seem silly, but after doing research on both epinions and
Amazon, I still can't settle on a decent 2-slice toaster to buy.

For years I have used an old 1950's GE chrome toaster that I bought ages ago
at a swap meet for $5. Personally, I don't find anything wrong with it, and
I will never get rid of it as long as it works for me. However, my husband
hates the thing. He thinks it's unsafe because it's old (it's the one
countertop appliance I always have to leave unplugged)... He hates that the
only thing we can toast in it is standard size bread... Nevermind that it
toasts bread *perfectly* every time, evenly and without burning.

So I'm tasked with buying our family an additional toaster that will toast
bagels, waffles, larger-size bread, etc etc, and that he won't panic if I
leave plugged in after using it.

Anyone out there love their toaster? Have you owned it for more than a
year? It seems that is the catch-22. People that hate their toasters WISH
they would break so they can replace them, and people who love their
toasters find that they break after a few months of use.

Thanks for your input!
Christine

My parents had the same dilemma when their C. 1950's toaster bit the
dust. They went through 4 or 5 toasters they considered
unsatisfactory, then got a small toaster oven which they said was the
only thing that toasted bread almost as well as the old toaster. I
have a Cuisinart 2-slice toaster which toasts thicker items. I
consider its performance barely acceptable.

It sounds like your hubby may not the one to do it, but if I were you,
I would have someone check out your existing toaster and bring it up
to current safety standards, probably meaning replacing the power
cord, and be grateful you have it.

We've had a kitchen Aid for about 9 months now. Does a good job, IMO. I
think it was about $50 or so. When looking, the only toaster I saw that was
not made in China was the Dualit, made in England. Very expensive and I did
not see it in stores.

Love might be a strong word for my feelings toward my T-Fel toaster, but I have
had it for about three years and am very happy with it. It is designed to
accept larger sizes, and it toasts with consistent results. After 4 years it is
still working, and that seems to be a record with small appliances these days.

I love my Sunbeam T-9. But your hubby wouldn't. It is circa 1939. Works
great, looks great, and I picked it up cheaper than a modern POS would
cost at Mall*Wart.

Please be sure to have it replaced with a similar cord. Cloth covered if
appropriate. After all, you'll want authenticity when you pass it down
to your grandkids.

I have a 40s Manning Bowman that's had the cord replaced. I love that
toaster. I also have a Sunbeam with wider slots and a toast one side
only bagel feature, I like it but couldn't say that I love it, it's been
around for about two years and still works fine but is usually only used
for bagels it does not toast as evenly as the old one does.

I bought a 40-year-old Farberware at a garage sale for $5 -- what's made
today costs a fortune and sucks besides. I don't toast but "standard"
bread. I had a $30 Maxim that lasted a few years and did a fine job;
it died and I can't find another.

I'd use the one you have. I have a Rival that I purchased for $9.95 over 10
years ago. I leave it plugged in all the time, though I do that with
everything. I'm an optimist. It won't toast bagels, but then I don't eat
them either. The one I had before this Rival was a Sunbeam that lasted 30+
years.

.. . . because it's old? Or is that an excuse?
Is there an unstated pretext here?

Or is age really the issue here? The age of the
toaster, or . . .

Mm hmm. Size.

Tasked? That connotes burden . . . an unwanted burden
not of your choosing. Placed on you by someone else.

You characterize his reaction as "panic"? Not rational?

> Anyone out there love their toaster?

And you want something you can love. A toaster.

It seems to me that there is really another issue
here -- a control issue. The toaster has become
a vehicle for exposing the control issue, but the
underlying problem is not really the toaster.

You can choose to act like adults and confront
the problem, or you can continue to play this
silly game, in which case the toaster you want
is clearly and unquestionably the Sanyo SK-KT21P.

This 2-slot toaster from one of the world's most
respected names in consumer electronics boasts
self-adjusting bread guides to accommodate
variable-thickness items, a cool-touch exterior,
six shade settings, removable crumb tray,
and internal cord storage.

But best of all, it has distinctive styling and
features which you will not find on any other
toaster -- features which will be a constant
reminder that you won the toaster battle, after
all. To see this monument to feminine victory,

Nah, Crash gave me a Winnie the Pooh toaster last year for Christmas. You
get images of Pooh and Tigger when you toast the bread, and when it's done,
it plays the Pooh song. It IS fun!

He got it at Swiss Colony, but you could find a better deal if you Froogle
for it. Just go to www.froogle.com and type in "winnie the pooh toaster."
There's a million of them out there.
