Default REQ - Recipe for Hot Buttered Rum

Crash would really like to have hot buttered rum on New Year's Eve, but I
have lost my recipe. Does anyone have one that they've tried themselves
and liked?

TIA

Hmmm... Well, mine is pretty simple but very good.

I start with Celestial Seasonings "Bengal Spice" tea.
It contains cinnamon and cloves, as well as a few other flavors that
make an amazing base for it.

To each cup of the tea, I add the juice from 1/4 lemon, 1 small pat of
butter, 1 tbs. honey and 1 shot of rum.

I use it as a cold remedy. <grins>

It's quite good however, and has passed the mom and dad test when I
served it to them.

I never really thought of it as something that need a recipe. You pour some
dark rum into a mug, add hot (boiling) water until it's tea coloured, add
sugar or honey to taste and a small dab of butter, preferably unsalted.

I find this a great home remedy for just about whatever ails you. I have been
suffering from a bit of a cold for the past few days and had a very restless
night because if the coughing. I got up and made myself a nice stiff hot
toddy, went back to bed cough free and slept for hours. I had pre-emptive one
last night, had a good nights sleep and the congestion is almost gone. It's
cheaper than cough syrup and tastes a whole lot better.

You don't buy the premixed tub at the store? It's good
stuff if you've never given it a try. All you do is add hot
water and rum.

We have in the past. I suppose we should be looking for it in a liquor
store instead of a grocery store?

Thanks for the recipe.

This triggered a memory of spending a Christmas on the in-law's farm in
Wisconsin. It was 20-below all week and at night it got cold.
I was the "new husband" in the family and my Father-In-Law made Tom and
Jerry's a couple of evenings. To show that I could do something useful
behind the bar I made Hot Buttered Rum. It was kind of a flop as they didn't
have rum and I substituted whiskey. I also added ground cinnamon so the
drinks were a cloudy, gloppy mess.

That was 33 years ago. I'm still married to his daughter and raised a couple
of pretty good kids who recently made dumplings for him. He's starting to
think I MIGHT be good enough for her. =

Maybe you were looking in the wrong section? It's in the
liquor section of my (chain) grocery store... it's often on
display during the winter holidays.

LOL! Keep your head high. The last time I checked, it
wasn't a crime to not know what section to look in for a
product like that.

In Minnesota, grocery stores can't sell liquor, so there isn't a liquor
section except for 3.2 beer and wine coolers. Didn't think to look there.
We don't drink very often (like close to never).

I'm too tired to hold my head up high. Might be time for a nap.

In that case, you're right. The liquor store is your best

For some reason, in my state, and even when we were in Minneapolis, the mix
was to be found in/or right next to the bakery section.

There was some sitting on the counter when I went to the local liquor
store today... It was not a refrigeratable item.

I have plenty of Bengal Spice tea tho', so will stick with my original
recipe. I've noted that the ones listed don't use lemon. It really is
good that way!

If you don't have the bengal spice tea, put some cinnamon and cloves in
a strainer and pour boiling water slowly thru it. Add juice from 1/4
lemon, 1 tbs. (or more) of honey to taste, 1 shot of rum and a pat of
butter.

==== SNIPPED ======

Now I've got 5 more recipes to decide among.
Each one looks better that the previous.
I'll have to have a group of friends over, make all five and have a
"Tasteing".

Thanks for posting them.

I'm having the same problem, Pete. I'm leaving it up to Crash, since he'll
be the one drinking them. I don't know if he will choose one of these,
or a tub of the ready made mix.

Well, when we got to the liquor store, he changed his mind. His parents
used to make Tom and Jerrys, and I think when he saw that jar of T&J mix,
he got a little nostalgic. So, Tom and Jerry's it is ... for Crash.

Me, on the other hand ... The only liquor I like is gin. Today is the
first time in my life that I've ever bought a bottle. I've never had it at
home. I also got some lemon sour and one of those squeezy lime-shaped
things with lime juice in it.

Should be an interesting evening. Neither of us drink, except on rare
occasions. <G>

Thanks to everyone for their recipes and suggestions.

Mine's pretty simple, but I sure like it on a cold day - for one cup - I mix
about a table spoon of butter, two T of brown sugar (okay I have a sweet tooth)
and a little cinnamon, pour a little rum in (sorry I never measure antyhing)
mix it up, fill up the cup with boiling water.
