Default KitchenAid Mixer Question

I am about to purchase a 5 quart KitchenAid mixer. I'd like to hear
pros and cons regarding the two styles I've seen: (1)the bowl lifts or
(2)the mixer itself tilts up. Is there a big functionality issue with
either style, or is it mostly personal preference? Thanks in advance
for any input!

I've been playing with them in the store, contemplating buying them.
Though the most expensive models have the bowl lift, I think I prefer
the tilting models like the Artisan. (Search amazon using words
"kitchenaid" and "reconditioned" and you might find a really good deal!)

In addition to my preceding post, the tilt-up top out at nine-cup "flour
power capacity" and the lift ups start at 11 cup, so don't be fooled by
quart ratings. The lift ups are far stronger units.

Here's a follow-up comparison link for four models I selected at

I bought about a year ago the "bowl-lift" design. This is a replacement of
the same type I had bought in the 80's. My use is mainly for bread and only
a few other things. If I were buying instead, I would buy the 6 qt. mixer
(for capacity), although I do not know now whether it is tilt or lift.

Kitchen Aid stand mixers are not rated for Horsepower... however they are rated
in Watts, (energy *consumed*, NOT power produced).

Unless they're physically disadvantaged no one needs a 5-6 quart stand mixer...
there is nothing those toys r us size units can do better than can be done with
a hand mixer or with ones own hands.

Yep, you are right. It was poetic license on my part. If someone is not
at all familiar with "watts," horsepower sure covers the concept.

The bowl-lift models are the heavy-duty ones. The design is a throwback
to when they were made by Hobart, though the components have been
cheapened since. If you work a lot with dough, or just need the largest
one you can get, they are alone in their niche. (If you mainly do
lighter work: beat eggs, mix cake batters, or the like, they may be
overkill for you.)

Last week I got this one from Amazon. Factory-Reconditioned KitchenAid
RRKP50 Professional 5 Series 5-Quart Stand Mixer, Onyx Black
I needed one that raises instead of tilt because of the spot I have it on
the counter. I saw the exact same ones on ebay but no free shipping or 25
dollar off special. I paid 144.00 delivered. Keep checking back because if
they are out of the color you want they usually get it back in stock within
a few days.

Hi

We do not know if you are interested in cooking, baking or both relative
to your Kitchen-Aid query. We have posted an article comparing

Glad you brought the topic up, Janell, although I have no answers.
I've been whipping everything up by myself for a few months now,
and I'm starting to crave a mixer. I tend to do a lot of things in
double batches. I've got a friend who bought the 6-quart mixer and
he says it is wonderful. He bought one for his mother and she is
happy with hers, also. I'm hesitant about two things, though.
First and foremost is the price! That's a lot of money for me.
Second is where do I store the thing. It's so big I'd almost need
to add a room on to the house for the darn thing.

Of if you simply want a high watts/buck ration, Sams Club had a 750 watt
Wolfgang Puck mixer for under $200.

How many years do you expect to get out of that Wolfgang Puck mixer?

Our family hands down Hobart-made KitchenAid mixers as heirlooms. They
are built like the proverbial tank.

Well, they were once, but I'm not sure that can be said of those currently
produced.

And 750 watts refers ONLY to the power consumption. Nothing else.

"Better" is not the only factor. I like "easier".

We have the tilt-head Artisan model. We love it. Not exactly
scientific, huh? It just seems easier to use than the other style.
