Default Popover ?

Hi, group!

Right now, I'd like to make some popovers, because I have a craving for
some. However, I have a question.

The two recipes I have each call for a certain amount of milk. All well and
good, but I don't have any milk. Can I substitute an equal amount of water
and have them turn out all right? (I believe I have the rest of the
ingredients.)

Thanks.

Milk is essentially: fat (cream = to make butter,) proteins,
carbohydrate/sugar (lactose = type of sugar,) and H2O. So take some
water, say 1/2 cup, add 1 tsp. of butter, mix a 1/2 tsp. of sugar, and
you pretty much have a concoction that resembles milk. Also, do you have
any dried powder milk, or canned evaporated milk?

HTH,

I didn't answer your question, because I gave you a better alternative.
Of course it's not going to taste the same if you add water (which has
no flavor.)

I don't think by adding water the taste will be that much different;
then again, tastes, especially educated palates, can tell the difference.

No, you can't substitute water for the milk. It has to be milk, or a
milk substitute with a similar fat content.

Well, I make popovers with the milk I have - skim milk (no fat), and
they are fantastic. You don't need milk fat to make popovers.

Water will work just fine, but they will be slightly different than if
you had used milk. If you have some butter, melt a spoonful of that and
add to the batter.
