Default Poll: 1/2% milk? - CA - yes

I have been drinking 1% milk for such a long time that now it tastes too
rich to me. Plus, I'd like to cut my cholesterol. But I hate non-fat
milk. I think 1/2% milk would be a good compromise, but in my state
they don't sell it. I think it takes an act by the legislature to allow
it. So, I am taking a poll, only for those who presently drink 1% milk.

The question: If you now drink 1% milk, and 1/2% (half-percent milkfat)
milk became available, would you try it?

Please put your two-letter state abbreviation, and your yes or no
answer, in the subject line of your reply.

Emphatic NO!! I'll tolerate 1% only at the nagging of my spouse. Normally
compromise with 2% and prefer real whole milk when I can sneak it home. I'll
drink a bit less of it rather than drink watered down imitation "trendy"
crap.

Other than that I don't have any strong feelings either way. =

Two reasons I don't mix the milk:

The gallon bottles are much cheaper, yet I don't use it fast enough to
buy two at once.
I would like a product that is fully fortified with extra milk proteins
(as the 1% milk is), not half that level.

Well, you've got a point there about the cost. But as far as the protein
goes -- fortified milk has 10g protein per cup, unfortified has 8 g. If you
mix them equally, you'll have 9 g per cup. If you really want that extra 1
g of protein, just add a little more milk to your glass. Less than an ounce
will do it. And it'll help you use up those two gallons just a little
faster. :-)

Subject: Poll: 1/2% milk? - PA - no

.. . . but from a different point of view.

Non-fat dried milk is cheaper, for its size. I can use it in more places than
the liquid.

Would mixing equal parts of 1% and skim milk result in the same thing?
Or does it not work that way?

I gave up drinking milk for the same reason - I can't stand skim milk.
I'll tough it out on some cereal occasionally, but that is it.

Yes!
and no. I've been drinking 1% for years, to reduce my fat intake. I
love milk, and drink at least 2 large glasses a day, sometimes 4 or 5,
including what I put on my cereal. Years ago I went to 2% to reduce my
fat intake on the advice of a Dr friend of mine.
Recently, I've been suffering from irritable bowel syndrome. Those of
you who've had it realize how unpleasant it is. I read up on it, and
found out that fatty foods are part of the problem. I just switched to
skim milk last week. While I certainly don't like it as much as 1%, if
it helps (and it appears to be, so far) with the problem, it's worth
it. Just another adaptation to accomodate the aging process!

If there's Skim Milk on the shelf that is 1/2%. Skim Milk is not labeled 1/2%
but by Law (US) that is what it is.

Chalk Water! I grew up on a farm, used to real milk, what they sell in the
stores as whole milk is no where near the milk that comes out of a cows
udder. When I drink milk I drinnk whole milk, I cook with heavy cream, eat
lots of butter, never (well hardly ever) go to a doctor. Live at 9700
feet, work fairly hard from time to time, have no trouble running 150
yeards uphill with the dog and I will be 69 here very shortly.

Drink milk not chalk water!

Also in Colorado.

Certain dairies will make what I remember as whole milk. Usually I buy
the store brand or Garelic at 2% fat content. A few months ago needed
some quick and picked up Hood whole milk.

It was like drinking cream.

Isn't it funny how people on Usenet think that what works for them

If I drink whole milk I feel like I'm drinking cream, although I do cook
with cream occasionally or half & half. I'm used to skim milk and have been
for 20 years. Even 2% to drink bugs me a little bit. Interesting to note
skim has more calcium than whole milk. I gather it has something to do with
the milk fat inhibiting absorbtion of calcium. But I'm not a doctor, nurse,
nutritionist nor dietition so please don't ask me to site sources. I read
it someplace or was told about it by a medical professional at some point.

Thanks for the clarification.
