Can't we have two cook-ins?
I think I am going to be in southern Cal for the next few months,
staying closer to home. I think I am taking an assignment in West
Covina, but won't be sure til next week. And I plan to be at the SD
one, which is now becoming a traditon to have at the Barto's place.

Always the first or second Saturday of June! You are our back-up hosts
along, with Debra, just in case the Bartos can't do it this year. If we do
have it in Poway, there can always be another in Orange County. I'll be
talking to Katherine and David soon.

Thank you, Charlie! This is the thread I lost when I wanted to say howdy
to Debra and Kaari! Sorry to have misplaced you two ladies. A mind is a
terrible thing to lose.

Excellent. We're doing some limited traveling in March (daughter's art
opening in Boston) and April (Baja California cruise for a week), but
June looks good to go. I'm thinkin' my contribution to the alcohol
consumption may be Caipirinhas this year. We may want to pre-order the
taxicabs, however...

In another thread I commented about how everything is tied together. When I
hear the name Caipirinhas, I think of Cab Calloway. Calpurnia, Calpurnia!!
Cab - taxicab. I look forward to your Caipirinhas. I shall amuse myself with
them. Unless Kay attends, I will be forced to make the traditional Kay's
Margaritas. I might make Black Velvets again. Despite some initial
hesitation, they were more popular than I expected.

Hi Kaari

I think about our visit to Seattle often...and wish we could get
organized and get everyone together again. That was really a great
gathering. How are you and Alan doing?

I lurk here from time to time....and jump in when the mood
strikes..or, when I see someone from the "old guard"....

Well, I have to admit that the version done by Woody Herman's Thundering
Herd was not only better but more widely known.

It was I who volunteered Debra. Actually, she volunteered several years ago
when we had a problem and I "assumed" that it was permanent. <grin>

Not real big - about 9' x 7', cabinet to cabinet (eyeball
measurement). It's a rental while we're househunting and has all
electric stove and cooktop, dammit. Otherwise, I'm pretty well
equipped. Uh, cookery-wise, that is. And, although you can't eat the
view, you *can* see from Oceanside to Catalina on a clear day :-)

Shoot, you southerners need to come up to San Francisco for
a change - I can beat your "inside" measurement of 9' x 7'
(cabinet to cabinet) by a foot, I can offer you a view
across the street AND (best of all for San Francisco)
there's parking IN FRONT of my house... on both sides of the
street.

LOL!

Mine is about the same... I was just wondering how big is big enough
to host a cookin. I've got a double electric oven and a 5 burner gas
cooktop..and with the new design, 3 people can comfortably work in
the kitchen at the same time..4 if they are good friends

Ok, I'll be the back-up

We had the SD cookin 2 years ago at Rita's, who had a smaller kitchen
than ours. Worked out fine.

There hasn't been a Bay Area Cook-in for years now. It has been quite a
while since the Sacramento Cook-In. I can't have a cook-in at my hovel
because, well, it is a hovel. I do have a view though. It used to be out
over a large, wild canyon filled with wildlife. Now the view contains a
large complex of apartment buildings and a nice view of the roof of a
Goodwill, a Mexican Night Club (noisy), and a body shop. I preferred the
deer, foxes, and other creatures. We even had (briefly) a Tasmanian Devil.

Charlie

OB Food: CROSTINI NAPOLETANI

Source: unknown

16 slices of Italian bread, cut 1/2-inch thick
about 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
1/3 cup black or green olivada or tapenade or 1/3 cup (4 oz.) Kalamata
olives, pitted and finely chopped
1/2 lb. FRESH mozzarella cheese, cut into 16 1/4-inch slices
1/2 lb. plum tomatoes, cut lengthwise into 16 1/4-inch slices
1/8 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. freshly ground black pepper

Preheat the oven to 400F. Brush one side of the bread slices with some of
the olive oil and arrange on a baking sheet oiled side up. Bake until
lightly browned and crusty, about 4 minutes.

Spread the olivada on each toast, cover each with a slice of mozzarella and
top with a slice of tomato. Brush the tomatoes with the remaining oil and
sprinkle with the salt and pepper. Bake until the cheese is melted, about 8
to 10 minutes. Serve at once.

Some lovely person had a cook-in in SF years ago in a one bedroom
apartment with a kitchen the size of a large closet. It worked.

I had a big kitchen and deck in those days but didn't want to host a
cook-in in my home, so I rented (for $20) a picnic spot in a park in
Berkeley and had an outdoor cook-in. People brought stuff to grill, Ray
built a fire in the enormous fireplace, there were extra grills and
cookers of all sorts. I didn't organize any of that, just rented the
picnic spot and publicized the date online. Folks flew in from
Washington State and Utah to attend. That was 1998.

And you missed it, you finko! (Actually, I think you posted that you had
a hopefully temporary health problem, otherwise you would have come.)
Most of the people appeared to be from the Bay Area, although Kalanamak
and sweety drove down from Seattle, Kay flew in from SouCal and her
husband drove. Oh yeah, and whatstherenames from SouCal came also. Darn,
can't think of it!

I know. <shame> I still feel bad about it. I really, really wish I had been
able to attend. Unfortunately that is a difficulty I have with being me. I
really wanted to meet you and a few others that I have not yet met.

That would be Jen (blacksun 21). Lovely lady.

Yes - we have a deck with about a 50' drop (this is the DH's smoking
section).. Can offer to tie you to the railing or let you place your
lawn chair in the front porch/walk area, which is secluded between the
houses.

Ray Burman?? Man, that's a name from the past. I went out to SF a few
years ago to participate in a camping cookin and stayed coming and
going at Ray's in Berkley. 1997, IIRC. Whatever happened to him?

Christine and I were going to get together to make a souffle
in January, but that fell through (no pun intended).

I'm thinking of hosting a summer get together at my house
for SF. My new master bath should have all the kinks worked
out and my "basement" will be completely remodelled by that
time. It'll have a full kitchen and indoor/outdoor access
for bbq/grilling. IOW: party central.

So, Bay Area Clan - what say you?

Mind you, the first cook-in was in Sacramento, at Anne Bourget's.

I have it as a goal to have my house decluttered enough and my deck built
in time to have a July 4 bash. It's been a moving target because of
Important Life Weirdness getting in the way ... sort of one of those "next
year, in Jerusalem" things. Next year! In Berkeley!

This Christmas I realized that I had enough money in the bank to hire
someone to install the yard, so mebbe I'll get busy.

The clutter level is still Medium, but that's an improvement from High.
(It's actually Low in the kitchen and living room.) If I were to stick
with the "Flylady" plan, it would be done by summer. My kitchen is
actually fairly well organized, what there is of it.

(Workspace about seven by ten.)

If you've been in Ray's house, mine's a titch larger, but only a titch.
Large back yard and (unusually for Berkeley) abundant street parking.

Unfortunately I won't be able to make the socal cookin ... significant
parental anniversary on the second sunday of June. Too bad as I have
crash space in southern Orange County (with a tiny slice of ocean view,
and you can see Catalina from the main road on a rare clear day).

ObFood: I still owe Jamie the recipe for my mom's lemon curd, so since I
actually have a day off, I will send it to her. Those of you reading this
can check out my food blog.

Charlotte, I'm sorry to hear that! I'll send you a notice anyhow. It may be
another weekend this year. It is always fun talking with you and eating your
food!

For what it is worth, the first weekend would work really well for me.
I am already in the area in Idyllwild, and I will be working in West
Covina til late May. Then back up here for a few weeks, at least til
after the SoCal cook-in.

I got a ton of lemons, and Limoncello is in the works. This
particular recipe will make four 750ml bottles.
Also trying another recipe, just cause I want to see which one is
better. You guys better be ready to drink up!!!

What foods go well with Limoncello, by the way? Never too early to
start planning!

Christine
