Default MN rfc'ers ...you've got my respect!

I swear, I don't know how you ppl do it. This CA wimp is driven back indoors by
by a windy 43 deg F morning. I can't even imagine cold that can do this:

Sure, we get a lot of snow in the Sierra's and we have our share of
incidents (Donner party), but this is just plain scary.

Yeh, my brother went to school in Mankato and fled after the first winter.
I'll take Hawaii any day, but surprisingly, my second choice would be
Alaska... in the panhandle. Winter in the Great Lakes region is actually
colder than much of Alaska.

The 65-year old guy who left his van? Rule #1 is don't leave your
vehicle. Rule #2 is make sure someone knows when you left, where
you're going, what your route is, and when you expect to arrive.

I can take bitter cold for a while, knowing I have a warm place to
return to. It can be invigorating. I feel for the homeless who don't
have the promise of a warm bed at night. And I didn't envy the road
crew that was working on the leaky watermain three houses down yesterday
-- for about 8-9 hours. When I went to retrieve my airpot, two young
guys were in the hole -- one had waterboots on, the other didn't -- and
no gloves and he was on his knees in the mud. "Shit for brains" is what
was going through my head.

I'm leaving in 20 minutes for the Fifth Annual Pirohy Marathon with
Brother Dan and Niece Patty. (I've got the first two batches of dough
made and *I'll* be making the cottage cheese filling when I get to Dan's
-- his sucks.

I'll have two coats in my car, boots, scarves, and a cell phone. And
Rob will know how I plan to get there. I'll check in when I get to
Dan's.

We love this weather -- it keeps the riff-raff out.

And Buffalo, New York gets a lot more snow than MN does -- I don't know
the cold temps they have there, though.

Yes, even in Cleveland the "lake effect" winters are sheer misery.

Now, Buffalo I know about. Got trapped there once when the first major
storm of the season closed the freeways for 2 days. Lotta snow and ice and
dumb drivers, but not so cold. I spent 2 nights camped out in my car in the
UofB parking lot. Hung out in the student center by day and was fed by a
tribe of Hare Krishnas. Those guys can cook some brown rice (OB food).

Yup, a snow storm's the best time to go out. Everyone who has no clue
how to drive in it (the majority of people around here) is sitting home
afraid to open the front door let alone start the car.

After it cranks up here (shortly from the looks of the radar) we're
headed out in search of a decent elliptical machine.

Well, it also helps to be properly prepared.

First thing this morning I plugged in my Kubota and after about an hour heating
the engine block that diesel kicked over first shot. It's now setting in my
driveway backed right up to the garage door, snow plow is attached and at the
ready. And even without the plow, no stinkin' snow stops my Landcruiser.

Agreed. The blower's all gassed up and pointed out of the garage. I
don't think that there's much of anything that'll stop a Landcruiser is
there?

That's terrible. My guess is that the Mr. had a heart attack, and that
the Mrs. just couldn't handle the cold, given that she lived in a nursing
home and likely had serious medical conditions of her own to deal with.

>Sure, we get a lot of snow in the Sierra's and we have our share of

The temperature isn't bad out there now. 18F with a 2F windchill. The bad
part is the drifted snow. I'm gonna have to work my way through 2-foot
drifts, a little at a time, throughout the day. I dug out by the curb,
where the snowplows left their pile of snow. Only got about 1/4 of the way
across when I decided to come in (my asthma decided for me). I just
dragged my feet through the snow and up to the front steps, so the mail
carrier can get to the door. Shoveled the steps, themselves, for him
though.

We're missing one bolt, ONE BOLT, or this could be done with the
snowblower. Crash can't help - medical condition. And I'm not
mechanically inclined. At all.

The driveway will eventually get shoveled, but I *will* feel sorry for
myself from time to time. <G>

YOU ARE NOT! Shovel, man, shovel! That's all the exercise you need!

I went out a 12:45 last night just to see what it was like. It was kind
of eerie how bright it was outside -- the lights downtown reflecting off
the low white clouds helped the street lights illuminate everything, and
all the snow everywhere was still white and shiny and undisturbed. The
now had stopped and wind hadn't started yet. The streets weren't plowed
yet, so it was kind of an adventure driving in my 2WD pickup.

I went to Wal-mart and watch the big road graders clearing the parking
lot. I bought a 10 1/2 pound frozen turkey, and it's in the small
electric roaster right now. It's about time to take it out and cut it
up. The wings will be used to make a pot of mock chicken soup cuz DD is
recovering from a cold. The legs and back will get used to make a pot
of gumbo tomorrow, and the breast and thighs will go back in the roaster
to finish cooking.

I also bought a bunch of dried beans to make some bean soup, and a big
bag of potatoes that was on sale. We're gonna be eating a lot of soup
and baked potatoes this week.

I've been shoveling much of the morning.

Best regards,
Bob

SHOVEL?!? That's sacrilege! I'll use the blower thank you very much!
;-) I'd much rather be lazy and exercise in the basement where it's
heated and I've got a boob tube to watch.

About 2" down so far and it's snowing pretty good. I just hit the
starter for the truck so in about 10 minutes or so when it's warmed up
we'll head out in search of one of those things.

Nanc want's the elliptical 'cause her knees are shot from some very
serious skiing for years, no more though.

While shoveling *is* exercise, I've never heard of someone throwing out
their back using an elliptical machine.

eh, she's really a pussycat ;-)

Just got back. Snowin' but nothing really serious. It started around
1:00p.m. or so and we probably have around three inches down.

Just for your info Ms. Carol, we got a Vision Fitness elliptical.
They're takin' that sucker downstairs to the basement though! AND, I'm
using the snow blower tomorrow. ;-)

OB food: 2 slabs of ribs are in the WSM doing nicely. We should be
chowing down on those bad boys around 6:00p.m. Sauce on the side for me
but my better half prefers wet ribs so I'll start moppin' them shortly.
I'm doin' wilted spinach and mashed potatoes to go with 'em. Yeah,
yeah, I know but we just feel like having mashed potatoes.

*blush* I try. I don't always succeed.

Actually, I'm ashamed to say, there are people who will testify to the fact
that I'm downright delightful sometimes. <G>

I am NOT looking forward to my next bout of shoveling. I stay out there
only until either my back starts to hurt, or my asthma kicks in. This
could take until July.

If I get around to it, I'm making chicken stew with dumplings, and a pot of
chicken soup. If I am too sleepy (my meds really do me in, which is why I
post in spurts), I'll just make soup. Either that, or Crash can learn to
make chicken stew. Hey, that's the ticket!

You mean that you don't have that boy trained YET?!? :-0 Hell, I can't
remember the last time I didn't cook excluding going out or to friends.
But the flip side of that I s'pose is I don't recall the last time I did
dishes either! Hm... then again, that's what the dishwasher does except
for the knives and big pots huh? Maybe I need to re-think this. ;-)

OB food: Off to mop her ribs, get the potatoes on and clean spinach.

Nope, he's not fully trained yet. He's one of those guys who has a couple
of specialties, and that's about it. I've been requiring him to at least
observe me when I make dinner on occasion. He decided, after a couple
times, that he has the ability to make fried rice, and so he does. I've
also been entering the simplest of "recipes" into MasterCook, so Crash will
have them if I become the dearly departed before he does.

There's even a recipe for tuna sandwiches. The recipe was established when
a 6 ounce can of tuna would actually produce 3 sandwiches. The only way to
accomplish that these days is to use canned, white albacore filets.

Seriously, dude. That's one scene I absolutely cannot watch. There's that
other one, too. No, no, no, no, no!

Yippy Kiya!

Rule #0 is to carry enough stuff in the car that you can
cover up and survive with the engine off or only on now
and then. I have a hard time convincing my kids of the
necessity of this, since people don't die on the road
very often. It does happen, though. On the up side,
we never have mudslides and earthquakes, and we haven't
been hit by a sizeable asteroid in I don't know how long.

As for keeping the riffraff out, that's only to be
mentioned to other Minnesotans. Others should delete
that message.

Actually it wasn't that cold in the Minneapolis area.
A couple days where it hit around -20 at night. Only
three of our four cars didn't start (well, actually
one was in Duluth and the another was user error).

"Yes," she said softly.

It's warm enough up there to have kickable chunks and plow sludge? And you
call yourself a Minnesotan? If I kicked the buildup behind the tires on
our car, I'd break some toes!

I shoveled three times yesterday, and the last quarter of the driveway is
cleared. The car is still under a mountain of snow. I've gotta take today
off. The fronts of my shoulders hurt SO bad.

So, I guess you win on Winter Poker, but only because I don't have the same
wussy weapons available as you do. So THERE!

Or the Nebraska couple that were totally lost and called 911 on their
cellphone a number of times but dispatchers couldn't locate them in
time - 'course, it didn't help that they had some meth in their
systems. People aren't too bright, sometimes.

....and you should. I have a new blower; hate, hate, hate to shovel -
even though all I have to do most times, is the front porch (bitty) and
steps. My shoulders also are killing me - not only from a major drift
across the drive (we only had an inch of snow, but 40 mph winds) that I
shoveled, like the martyr I like to pretend I am, but picking up my
lunker of a grandson (he's 14 months old). Ouch! I feel for ya,
Carol. Take it easy.

If I can't get out to do my snow removal, my summer lawn-mowing boy
will come if I call him. I've lived here since 1969, one-half block
from a busy and popular elementary school, and 2003 was the first
summer anyone, ANYONE, came around offering to do lawns/snow removal
for money. Kids nowadays! ;-)
