I've decided, after a few minutes of thought, to post however I see fit. So,
if you hate top posted remarks, don't read them! I'm not downloading anything to move the cursor (although that was a kind suggestion), and I'm not changing newsgroup readers. It has been my experience with computers that the less I change on them, the longer they seem to work <g> So.. to horribly chop up a Plato quote... Let the poster post, and let the reader read! lubbs! lucy ![]() p.s. If it means so much to any individual here, you are welcome to pay me to learn all the rules and apply them with each post. <grins> |

So, If your objective in posting is to reach an audience, then it behooves you to post in a fashion acceptable to the community you're communicating with. Bottom posting is simply good netiquette. If I said, "I've decided, after a few minutes of thought, to belch, fart loudly, and even masturbate in fancy restaurants whenever I have the urge," then you get the flavor of your decision with respect to-top posting in newsgroups. When engaging in social discourse, refraining from polite behavior throws sand into machinery that already works with difficulty at best. It's not hard to avoid offending people... unless you're so lazy you don't care. And if you're going to do that, why bother posting at all? I'll leave you with the following dialogue, which imitates what you're suggesting: A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text. Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing? A: Top-posting. Q: What is the most annoying thing on usenet? -A |

OK I'm not going to hate you if this is what you choose to do ... Buts is it really that much more difficult to post below a foregoing quoted post to which you are responding? I used to top post also until it was explained WHY doind so makes it unreasonably awkward and more difficult for others to follow the discussion, especially if there are one or more other posters that successively respond to your comment and to those that follow. This is just a matter of etiquette and consideration for everyone else. And maybe I missed something but I have no idea what you mean by "downloading anything to move the cursor." |

. com... > I've decided, after a few minutes of thought, > to post however I see fit. So, if you hate top > posted remarks, don't read them! Obviously, that's your prerogative. Of course, if you plan to get along in a community, it behooves you to follow the community's standards. > I'm not downloading anything to move the > cursor (although that was a kind suggestion), > and I'm not changing newsgroup readers. You don't need to do either of those things. The whole reason your -- and many -- news readers place the cursor at the top of your reply is *not* so that you can just start typing; it's so that you will *trim* the post you're replying to, thus saving bandwidth for those who are on dial-up (and there are still plenty of those people in the US *and* around the world) *and* making your post easier to read. For example, insertions between the original text, as I'm doing, makes it more clear what exactly I'm responding to and helps make my post understandable even in the event of poor message propagation and/or threading (poor propagation continues to be a problem with many news servers). > It has been my experience with computers > that the less I change on them, the longer > they seem to work <g> For the purpose of illustration, I'm leaving the above sentence in; my first inclination was to delete it, since I'm not going to respond to it. > So.. to horribly chop up a Plato quote... > Let the poster post, and let the reader read! > > p.s. If it means so much to any individual here, > you are welcome to pay me to learn all the rules > and apply them with each post. I'd have to agree with another poster down-thread; your tone indicates bitchiness to me as well (note I'm not calling *you* a bitch, a distinction worth noting), and an unwillingness to learn. While I note that you say interpretation of tone says more about the reader .... well, I would just gently remind you that the onus of clear communication starts with the writer, not the reader. Usenet is a written medium, and we are therefore without the benefit of facial expression and body language to clarify your tone. As for the rules, there are very few for you to remember; if you follow along with how just about everyone else here posts (well, you could *snip* more than most people here ![]() A couple of sites that you will find useful: http://www.ibiblio.org/usenet-i/usenet-help.html http://www.netmeister.org/news/learn2quote.html -- if nothing else, read section 2: Quoting and Answering. When I'm going thru the postings, I just keep my finger on "End." To read the top posters, of course, I don't have to click "End." But after awhile, I do stop reading top postings, they usually are quick quips and not to the point, and too much trouble for me. Dee |

You can put them wherever you want, but my time is at least as valuable as yours. I normally post a reply at the bottom, unless the the post I'm replying to already has a top-posted reply, in which case I top post. One thing I'm NOT going to do is completely re-arrange a post (because of someone else's top-posting) just for the convenience of the next reader. I'm not a f****** editor, not do I want to be. As far as forwarding e-mail or usenet posts, I believe that the material forwarded should be in exactly the same format as originally constructed, otherwise, I'd be forwarding "my" version of it. You can use your fingers, although there is a requirement that a brain be attached. Your attitude is all too common today. You are going to do what you want and the hell with everyone else. My computer says that you are using Outlook Express to post. I know that it puts the cursor on top, which is a Bad Thing. However, assuming that you have a mouse and a PC, then before you start typing a reply, move your mouse cursor to the end of the post you are replying to, and click your left mouse button. Now hit the enter key a couple of times, to put some space between the original post and your reply. Now start typing. We're talking maybe two seconds of your time, and no new software. Now you owe me US$75 for technical consulting. :-) -- Dan Abel Sonoma State University AIS |
