Default Speaking of Alfredo

One of the menu items at Safari, the East African restaurant that we
went with Steve to on Saturday was Fettucine Alfredo. I asked the owner
WHY and got a bit of an education about Italian colonies and East
Africa's proximity to Italy. Nice Man probably mumbled again about the
ignorant and geography-challenged Meen-a-soh-tans. He was very gracious
(and so were Steve and Rob explaining it to me, too.)

Did he mention that Ethiopia wasn't so much COLONIZED as CONQUERED by the
Italians in WWII?

One of my finest memories of NYC was doing an admission on a African man
(Pneumocystis carnii) who didn't speak English, but spoke Italian, via
an old Italian patient (lung cancer). I'm sure neither is alive now, but
it was a rather timeless scene of a low lit bed in a "ward" room where
other's slept, and a doc and a couple of diverse people tried to solve
one of life's problems together.

ObFood: You know you're a parent when you crumble up the shredded wheat
("hay"), pepper it with raisins ("dung") and place a plastic elephant in
the middle of it, all to get squirt to eat.
Of note, tonight was the first time he said "hungry".

I remembered that I forgot (!) to mention this "oddity" when I posted.
I'm still not sure why _northern_ Italy was so influential, but ...
Glad you remembered. It was one more point of interest to the evening.

p.s. to the other poster mentioning Italy's conquest of Ethiopia, this
guy is/was Somali, so it didn't really enter into the conversation. s

Italy overran Somalia too, and until all the infrastructures in Somalia
collapsed the Italian university system had ties with Somalia. There were a
number of Somalians studying geology at the U of Florence when I was there
in the early 80s.

I don't remember. If the word 'colonies' put you off, know that it was
my word, not his. (I've got a million ways of being ignorant.)

I don't think we talked about Ethiopia -- he's Somali.

Somalia was also colonised in the nineteenth century by the British and
Italians. Many older Somalis still speak/read Italian.

LOL! You probably didn't learn about it in school the way I did. Plus
living in a neighbourhood with a huge Somali population helped somewhat

2.5 years and on a craze of eating only that which he can stab with a
grown up's fork. Can't fork it, forget it.
