Default On the subject of lobsters

The ones we see here are at the supermarkets and restaurants, swimming
around in tanks. These I recognize!
However, what exactly are rock lobster tails - are they really lobster? I
don't even know what rock lobsters are -I only know they are as expensive as
lobster here but don't know if they're worth it.

I think, but could be wrong, that they are from the Carribean. I've never
had one, but hear that they're not as meaty or as good as the other ones.

We always served rock lobster tails when I worked in a seafood restaurant
years ago. Honestly I don't know where they come from but they were meaty
and tasty. Cut the spines from underneath the shell and flip the "meat"
over the top of the shell (after bending the shell backwards until it
cracks); brush with butter (and garlic if you wish) and broil them until the
meat is opaque.

Slipper lobster tails are smaller but also tasty. Langostinos aren't really
lobster but they taste about the same.

The best lobsters are from New England. There are other kinds of lobsters,
and Rock is one of these. They can be good but in my experience never match
up to the "genuine article."

Well, I'll be darned - I would never have realized they're native to
Australia. Most of the cost must be in the shipping! Gotta try one of
those suckers, although my loyalty will always remain with Maine lobsters
and the lobster pounds.

I haven't heard about rock lobster tails in 20 years, since
we lived on the east coast. They were imported frozen from
South Africa, often on sale for $.99/lb. and were a cheap, tasty
substitute for shrimp in many recipes. I always assumed they
were some species of salt water crayfish.

Well, they were advertised the other day for $6.99 per tail, which seemed
pretty darned high for ersatz lobsters.

OK, it sounds as though what we used to get were langostinos
marketed as "rock lobster tails".

Langostinos are small; more like crawfish, aren't they? That's what they
used to sell in Hawaii, anyway.

Yes, langostinos are small. A bit larger than crawfish but smaller than
lobster.
