Default O.T Holy Crap!

I was just checking out the new MSN home page. It's been re-vamped to
compete with Google. On the left side of the page you have the opportunity
to check the White Pages. Type in your name. For one member of this
newsgroup, I not only got the address and phone number, but I was provided
with a map as well. You'll also get the age of the person you a searching
for, relatives, their age,(whether they live in the same location or not)
plus directions and prices for obtaining a complete background
check--criminal record, sex offenses, liens, you name it. Now I know all
this stuff was available before, but you had to at least have a clue how to
go about it. Now anyone can point and click and pay up with a credit card
and rummage through your life.

Same here. I come up with the right name, address and phone number but the
map shows me living a mile or so away from where I really live.

Excite has had the ability to do this sort of look-up for a long time, and
the maps on Excite are correct.

If nothing else, it cuts down on the sales calls. Once I got enhanced
caller ID with anonymous call blocking, all the phone calls asking for money
or selling aluminum siding and windows stopped.

So far, all of the online directories have our address wrong, correct
phone number. However, even if they got our address correct, it
wouldn't really help as our address was arbitrarily assigned, doesn't
follow the pattern on the street, and cannot be gotten to from the main
street without specific knowledge and directions.

Same here, but the Public Records power search (on the same page)
claims to have not only my phone number, but my address, and among
other things, lists my age! And for only $50, you can find out:

"current & previous addresses, alias names, roommates, relatives,
family members, marriage, divorce, neighbors, property ownership,
legal judgments & more personal profile info."

That's just creepy, even if it is all taken from public records...

That is exactly what prompted the heading for my posting. Mike says this
has always been available through Excite--I don't know because I never
looked there. I know you could get to all this stuff before the MSN site,
but this is just so in your face that it bothers me. Other places make you
work a little harder for the info.

I signed up with the Missouri no-call list, it does such a good job I
never bothered with the national one.

I signed up for the New York State one as it was available first. I
figured that I'd sign up for the National one as well. No more

We signed up with both the national and state lists. The only soliciting
phone call we have received was from the local fire department.

Carol, avoid that like the plague. Don't go there. If you want to
contribute, do it directly. It's usually a scam, and not by the
fire department.

Now there's an idea. I had an unlisted number for a while.
Before that we were listed and we had a rash of calls. They
hung up as soon as we answered. The next time we went away
for a few days our house was burglarized. Then they came
out with call display. I think that put an end to a hobby
for a lot of pathetic people.

Holy cow! That didn't even occur to me! When we have a little extra
money, I'll run up to the fire department and make a donation. I've been
in a home fire, and I *really* appreciate what they do for us.

I second Nancy's caution about phone solicitations from the fire dept
and add the police dept. I've been called to contribute to the local
police athletic league (or some other PD cause), but later discovered
that the callers were professional fund raisers who took at least 85%
of the donation as their fee. The first year they called, I thought
the caller was a police officer donating a lot of personal time to the
cause and made a big contribution. Some time later the newspaper ran an
expose of the practice, apparently pretty widespread. The next year
when I was called I confronted the caller. No more solicitations.

Add in those change cans at the counter of various stores. They are
permitted to keep 98% of the money, just for placing those cans here
and there. Send your donations directly where you want it to go, and
that goes for that money machine United Way. You support the
cause you believe in directly, avoid the middle man.

That is a pretty common MO for shady phone solicitors. You can add to the
list the VFW, American Legion, and any charity connected with children. I
had people calling my office constantly wanting me to sponsor kids to go to
the circus. You know there is a problem when they offer to pick up the
check so you don't have to mail it.

I'm not in there at all (my name is a couple of times, but these listings
are other, real people).
I even tried, giving additional information. Nope, I don't exist and I've
lived at this same address for 17+ years.
Maybe I can convince the IRS to use this data base. <eg>

Thanks for that again. Many people may have never heard of it.
I've since reported 3 different solicitors for violations. One even
called back after the violation was reported and tried to chew me out for
reporting him (he knew it was me because I introduced him to the system
and told him I was going to report him). I hope he rots in prison

Nah, I destroyed all the cookbook data and I don't even have the same
computer. I have no idea where you live and I don't have a stalker bone
in my body.

Most fire departments will tell you right out, don't donate any money to
these phone solicitors at all.

In our area, if the fire departments want to collect funds for any reason,
they always publicize it on TV and radio, have a public collection area
with uniformed firemen and a truck with the lights flashing.

I have a nav system in my car & every once in awhile it sends me
cockeyed like that. I have done mapping before trips with both yahoo &
mapquest & been sent down the primrose path, too.

I wish the local fire department would stop it's fundraising tactics. They set
up tolls at main intersections and at the entrance to the local plaza.

I once had someone call claiming to be a police office saying that he had the
tickets that my wife ordered for the circus. The scam is that you pay for some
underprivileged child to go to the (their) circus. I told him that I doubted
he was a police office, just an employee for a marketing company and hung up.
The SOB called back and started to yell at me. I just set the phone down and
walked away. After a few minutes I went back and hung up the phone. I wonder
how long he carried on before he realized I wasn't there.
