Default Weird Avocado

Picked up some avocados for guac, and they were normal Haas, mostly
black/dark green, but firm and softish to the touch. Opened them up -
great quality. Mashed them up, tasted them and they were *sweet*. It
was a taste that was really hard to describe - not pleasant but not
unpleasant - and definitely not the usual avocado taste. I have never
had anything like this happen previously, and I buy avocados about once
a month. Any explanations?

TIA,
-L.

Are you taking any new medications?
Some can alter your taste perceptions.

Ah -ha!~ You solved it! Yes I am - a drug that increases insulin
absorption, so it might affect my perception of sweetness. But
wouldn't it affect other things I eat? So far, the only thing I
noticed were the avocados.

Metformin? (Glucophage)

Hard to say... it might eventually.
Avocados tend to have a rather unique chemistry. :-)

I started glucophage about a month ogo for insulin resistance.
Seems to really be helping me to lose the weight, but I've also been
following a very restricted diet.

I did eat some avocados today and I did not notice any difference in
taste, but then I had chopped them up and added mayo.

No bread tho'. <sigh>

If you've cut way back on, or eliminated, sugar in your food, the naturally
occurring sweetness of other foods will seem sweeter. Try a sip of milk if
you don't usually drink it. It will probably have a sweetness that you
don't remember.

To me, a cold avocado is a great substitution for a bowl of ice cream.

My guess is that they were harvested too green. Though they may have
softened and darkened in color with age.

Very true... :-)
Same goes for salt.
I've been low sodium now for about 10 years and there are some foods I
just can no longer eat as a result.

Hmmmmm... I've always like my avocados served "savory". :-)
Despite the above, Avocados are one of the items I put a salad dressing
on.

I can walk right by a box of donuts at work now and not even be tempted.
My "sweet tooth" has pretty much vanished, at least most of the time.
Apple pie is still a weakness but I can easily stop at one piece.

Funny how our tastes change with strict dieting.

This isn't exactly on topic but....
have you had any side effects? When I take metformin alone, I have rather
PITA side effects, but strangely, they seem to lessen to a great degree when
I take it conjunction with something else.
Weird.

I was warned by my doctor about that and she said the unpleasant side
effects would stop after a month or so of use. She also used a graduated
dosage for me so it would not be as distressing. 1 a day for a week,
then 2 a day for a week etc. to work up to two twice per day. These are
500mg.

It's been almost exactly a month now and there are no more cramps, and
the "other" common side effect has nearly gone away. :-)

And I've lost about 15 lbs. in the last month. I'm hoping the drug will
do as advertised and increase insulin sensitivity!

PITA is a good way to describe the side effects! <lol>

But, if it continues working this way, it'll be worth it.
I miss pasta. :-P

My other meds are Thyrolar and Adderal.
I'm also rather hypothyroid. :-P Double whammy for weight loss!
That and my internet addiction. <G> I need to get out and walk more.

When eaten in small amounts, this pasta doesn't raise my BG at all, and it
tastes and "feels" the same as regular pasta.

Economy hint: Ragu Lite has the same number of carbs as the low-carb
version, at half the price.

Perhaps you missed the parts of the original post where it was stated that
the avocado was "firm but softish to the touch" and of "great quality".
Doesn't sound "softened and darkened in color with age" to me.

My experience with Dreamfields is the same as Damsel's. It doesn't raise my
BG and I can easily eat 3 ounces (uncooked) without any problems (though
I'd have to be really hungry to eat that much pasta at one go, I usually
struggle over 2 ounces).

Maybe they were Mexican Hass avocados? Only had California Hass myself.

Humm....have you tried whole grain high-fiber bread?

I was a test subject for Metformin for polycystic ovary syndrome - was
when they were trying to get it put on the market (for PCOS) about 10
years ago. Funny thing is, I can't take it now - it makes me sick.
This about my 7th or 8th trial on it. I'm only taking 500mg/day.

Damn. :-)
Thanks for that!!!!!!

I've been making spagetti using shredded bamboo shoots.
Not quite the right texture, but it went well with sauce and sausage.

Got this bookmarked!

My "bread" substitute has been the HEB brand low carb "flour" tortillas.
They are loaded with protien fillers and only have 8 grams of carbs, 4
net carbs. And unlike most low carb tortillas, these don't taste like
cardboard! They are quite good.

They make a mean grilled cheese on the foreman......

Right now I'm avoiding starch and sugar completely!
I just lose weight more easily that way.
I've lost nearly 20 lbs. this month and still have another 100 to go. :-P

Ugh. I'm up to 2,000 mg. per day.
That's the max dose.

It makes _everybody_ sick! That's a normal side effect, but, that
decreases over time and you normally develop bowel tolerance after about
4 weeks. You just have to put up with it and be patient. Those side
effects are pretty much gone for me now and I've been on it for exactly
4 weeks now.

If it works, it will have been worth it. ;-)

I think they call 2.5 ounces, uncooked, a serving if I remember right.
It'll make a nice small-medium bowl of pasta. You'd definitely need a
salad and some kind of protein (Italian sausage or meatballs?) to make a
complete meal.

I wish I had your problem, Morganna (if that's your real name). I can sit
down and eat most of a one-pound box of spaghetti. Portion control,
portion control, portion control. Self control, self control, self
control.

I think that it's a rule that when you make grilled cheese with
tortillas, you have to call it quesadillas.

Cool, thanks!
That would cook up into a nice serving, especially with Italian sausage,

I'm currently taking strong antibiotics for a kidney problem, and combined
with the glucophage et al, it's really been doing a number on my stomach.
The good news is, I'm down a pants size.
I've learned certain tricks over the years that help, food wise. For
instance, I can have pasta as a side dish, with protein and a fat but no
bread. It's all in the combination, honey! lol With the new meds I'm on, I
have to be careful not to have too few carbs in a meal (sounds odd, I know)
or I will drop rapidly.
Walking is the best thing. I love to go down to the beach to walk...it
always seems to go faster and be much more enjoyable and I walk longer and
farther there than I do around my neighborhood. Course, that could have
something to do with stopping for stop lights every 100 yards. heh.

I'm with ya there, Carol.
Spaghetti was always my favorite meal. I preferred it for breakfast in
highschool over any breakfast foods. Then when I got older and moved out on
my own I began experimenting with different pasta dishes, and practically
lived on it for a while since it was so cheap and filling.

True... :-)
I've found that I cannot combine meat with starch.
Meat and green veggies are ok, and starch and green veggies are ok,
just not meat and starch. No meat sandwiches. :-(

You say that like it's a bad thing! <lol>

Just to clarify, I was talking about my BG, not dropping weight or anything

It drops fast and hard and I'm left shaking and dizzy and feeling like I'm
walking through water.

Well, I'd love to live alot nearer to it ;-) I live about 10-15 minutes from
the beach right now. My goal is to live *on* it.

Oh! Oops!
I thought you meant weight. <lol>

Well, most good nutrition recommendations state a mix of carbs and
protien in a balanced diet for most people. I seem to do ok with a low
carb diet tho' but it's not for everyone.

I never did. I have been on it a number of times. I decided to try it
again as I recently had my gall bladder removed and thought it might
make a difference.

You just have to put up with it and be patient. Those side

For the time being...
4 or 5 days on of the "fat fast" and 2 to 3 days of induction.
When I lose enough, I'll switch back to South Beach.

As we go through life thinking heavy thoughts, thought particles
tend to get caught between the ears causing truth decay- so be sure
to use mental floss twice a day.

Not everyone gets tummy rumble from it, and about 5% never "get used to
it". I've had more than one chronically constipated person **love** the
loosen stools. OTOH, lots of people have gallstones out and find their
tummy rumbles don't change.

ObFood: baby insisted on trying pepperocini last night despite my gentle
warnings. He chewed for 20 seconds, politely leaned over his plate and
let it drop. "hot hot" he said, and laughed. I'm really hoping for an
adventurous eater....
