Default Taste of Home Cooking Event

Has anyone ever been to one of these "Taste of Home Cooking" Events? We had
one last night and from listening to the advertising on the radio, I was
really hyped up about going. So, I dragged the wife along (she was slightly
interested) and off we went.

It was not at all what I was thinking it was. It was like watching a TV
cooking show with someone brand new and nervous in front of the camera!

Now, don't get me wrong! I had fun! Growing up in a major City (population
1.5mil), when you move to a small town (population 7K), you find yourself
going to all kinds of things you wouldn't/couldn't have dream of but there I
was. I was actually excited about it.

Then the two hour infomercial started. I remember watching old 50's style
(as re-runs. I'm only 39) when I was little and they'd stop in the middle
of the show to do an advertisement for a particular sponsor. The exact same
thing happened last night. All throughout her demonstration she'd plug
Jimmy Dean Sausages, Litehouse dressings and Starkist products.

The highlight came when she was showing us how to make a chocolate/peanut
butter cheese cake. She forgot to fold in the whipped cream. It was a very
*thin* cheesecake. Even she laughed her ass off about it after a few
minutes.

Definitely not what I was expecting but something I would go to again.

Thoughts or comments people?

Thanks,
Bret

I went to one a couple months ago. I thought that it was funny that in the
goodie bag that they handed out, there was a can of tomatoes. Who the heck
wants to lug around a can of tomatoes? Why not just put a coupon in the
darned bag?

The person doing the demos seemed pretty good at it, but you're right about
the never-ending commercials.

But hey, it was free, so I got what I paid for. And they gave a lot of stuff
away in raffles, including a couple of really big prizes.

Free? We paid $10 a ticket and there was almost 800 people there! What
really got me was the fact that some of the people there drove over 200
miles just for the show.

What I really found ironic is the fact that if you look at the all the top
chefs in the world, they are mostly males but go to a home cooking show deal
and you'll find out who does most of the cooking! Women. I swear, us guys
were out numbered by 65 to 1 at the show. Like, is it Okay to be male and a
professional chef but lame to be a male that cooks at home?

I got teased left and right last night but I still had fun! I gave as good
as I got!

I like those odds.

Most professionals are male, not just chefs but cooks in the restaurant
industry. I think more men cook at home than the ratio at the party
suggests. I find that women are more likely to go to parties like that
(tupperware, pampered chef, et al). I am not trying to be sexist, this
is just an objective observation based on all those years growing up
when my mom went to those parties and the only man in the house was the
host's husband who was sitting on the couch drinking beer with his hand
down his pants watching TV. At least that is what my mom told me.
