I was raised in California and I remember a "special 1 beater" electric Oleo
mixer with a glass base designed to spread the dye evenly.

I did, I was not aware of this little piece of history. Maybe if they got rid of
this crap, they could pay dairy farmers decently and keep farms alive.

Oleo or margarine should be banned anyway. Disgusting stuff.

I don't buy or use anything but butter.

And I remember my kid brother in the wartime years, substituting blue food
coloring for the orange dye button. We ended up with blue margarine and no
one could cook with it, let alone spread it on bread. Food should not be
blue!

Margarine is full of trans-fats. That is neither useful nor healthy for
anything but researching cancer and obesity in lab rats.

Pass the butter, please! :-)

Whatever. Transfat is the latest fanatacism for the American people.
http://forum.lowcarber.org/archive/index.php/t-168966

Soft margarine has less transfat and in anycase as long as you eat
everything in moderation you will generally be healthy. I get the feeling
that a lot of people are going to have heart attacks over worry about
transfat now even though they never thought about it until now and have
been healthy until now too.

Ben

I am fairly healthy despite ignorantly eating trans fats most of my
life. I am also 25. Problems will not surface for at least another 10-20
years.

Also, there was very little research about the harmful effects of
transfats until recently. It is not just a crusade low-carbers are on,
even the traditional low-fat camp, including the FDA, says that
trans-fats are bad.

According to the FDA, trans-fats should be kept to an absolute minimum,
if not completely removed from our diets. I think in 2005 the new
regulations take effect requiring nutrition labels to break fats down
into total, saturated, and trans. Companies using trans-fats are
starting to go apeshit about removing them from their products, because
nobody wants to look bad when the new labeling requirements take effect.

I wish the FDA would make manufacturers break down protein and
carbohydrates further too.

As proof of what a loving and wonderful mom I am, I made a light
green cake with light blue frosting for our middle son's third birthday
(at his request). It was hideous, but it was a great cake, butter cake
with blackberry filling, and a real vanilla buttercream frosting. Since
he shares his birthday with his dad, we put two sections of candles on
it, one that was 3 candles and one that was 33. We got to have a little
science experiment and see how forest fires work with the draw from the
fire. The section of frosting under Rich's candles was permanently
bleached and melted.

Regards,
Ranee

Two years ago my niece's birthday cake was covered with blue icing. I
pooped blue for two days. It was not a pretty sight :-D. Purple cotton
candy does the same thing to me, though the blue one is not so bad.

(Does this fall under the "too much information?" category?)

LOL! Yes.

We had an interesting blue "food" issue when our oldest started
sucking all the blue ink out of a marker when we turned our backs. He
was about 18 months, and the next few diapers were quite interesting.
Took me a bit to realize what was wrong.
