Default Make your own sundae bar

"Make your own sundae" seems to be a popular dessert option at buffets,
church suppers, pot lucks, etc. I have a friend who likes to go to church
suppers, because they are not terribly expensive, you usually get a decent
meal, and you feel like you're donating to a good cause. Not to mention,
you don't have to get dressed up and you don't have to clean the kitchen
afterwards! We've gone to a few in the past few weeks.

Dessert is typically some sort of buffet, usually "make your own sundaes".

They hand out bowls of ice cream (sometimes soft serve, but usually it's
regular hard ice cream from those giant tubs), either chocolate or vanilla,
and have an assortment of toppings to choose from. Nuts, a variety of
crushed candies and cookies, different sauces, which you can help yourself
to. And of course, there's always someone with a spray can of whipped cream
at the end of the table to top off your creation.

My friend likes a bit of everything with her chocolate ice cream, topped
with a big glob of whipped cream. It's a big mess but she enjoys it!

Me? I always take vanilla. Might add a drizzle of caramel sauce. Will
definitely add lots of nuts. Maybe some crushed candy, especially if there
are peanut butter cups or Butterfingers. Maybe a cherry or two. No whipped
cream. I'm a purist when it comes to ice cream. The whipped cream just gets
in the way of the ice cream!

So when you're faced with a "make your own sundae" buffet, What's in your
bowl??? :-)

Vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, more hot fudge,
yet more hot fudge. Toasted pecans. Whipped
cream. A maraschino cherry.

Friendly's in New England made these "Toasted
Pecan Sundaes" when I was young and they were
very hard to resist. They are also great with
coffee, real pistachio or peppermint stick ice
cream.

Well, back in the day, Carvel used to make nice sundaes. You know,
a hot fudge sundae wasn't just vanilla ice cream with some hot fudge
on it, it had more stuff. Anyway, I used to like something called
a Hot Tin Roof? I think that's what it was called.

Vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, peanuts, whipped cream. I think this
parlor name Farrell's made something similar.

When I was young (relative term, I am only 25), I would literally put
*everything* at the sundae bar into my bowl. I would then proceed to
watch it melt as I was already stuffed. Sometimes it was piled up so
high that when it melted it would dribble onto the table.

I have not gone to one of those things in a while, but after my mother
taught me not to waste food, I usually had vanilla ice cream with
chocolate sauce, raspberry sauce, and sprinkles.

I remember Farrell's! Do they still exist? I was never much of an ice
cream person, but if I was with a group of kids, we'd go to Farrell's and
order some huge trough-like thing and we'd all pig out on the same bowl.
Does anyone remember what that was called?

Gawd... I remember having birthday parties there when I was a kid. It
has to be almost 25 years since I went to one. Maybe I'll include one of
the remaining locations in my hoped-for trip this summer.

Well, at Cold Stone, where you choose the flavor of ice cream and then
choose add-ins or toppings, I used to get the coffee ice cream, which I
accompanied with heath bar (crushed), roasted almonds, and praline pecans.
Yum!
Another favorite is the cheesecake or vanilla flavor with a variety of
berries. Raspberries, Blackberries, and Strawberries.
For vanilla ice cream...spanish peanuts and hot fudge!

I watched three of my 9th grade classmates (boys)consume an entire
Kitchen Sink at Jahn's in 1966. I remember it to this day because
Stanley, one of the boys, ended up in the hospital after he sent his
stomach ulcer into overdrive!

Sundae bar sounds pretty good.

I bought a "Dove Bar" once. Imagine my surprise when it was made with ice
cream inside instead of dove.

I wasn't brave enough to try an "Eskimo Pie."

Funny you should ask! I was just looking it up after I saw on Food Network
that there was a Farrell's here in Sandy Eggo...imagine my surprise! I
hadn't thought of that place since I was a kid. It was a birthday party fave
back then. They have the Pig's Trough, which is basically a double banana
split. Then there's the Tin Roof, which is what Nancy described....hot
fudge, peanuts, whipped cream, cherry on top.The Gibson Girl, vanilla ice
cream with butterscotch topping and cherry nectar, topped with whipped
cream, exotic sherbets, and toasted pecans. Then there is the Mt Saint
Helen: vanilla, chocolate and strawberry icecream topped with hot caramel
and a "lava flow" of hot fudge. And of course the obligatory whipped cream,
nuts and a cherry! Personally though, I think the Hot Fudge Nutty Nutty
sounds better....hot fudge and peanuts like the Tin Roof, but then they add
toasted almonds too, which are my favorite topping, nut wise. And the
Raspberry Fields Forever sounds like one someone else in this thread
mentioned, except instead of vanilla, this is chocolate ice cream with
raspberries and hot fudge.

There is one in San Diego. I think it is the last one around hereabouts. I
still fondly remember the Carnation Ice Cream Parlors. All gone.

There are two: Mira Mesa (i.e., the San Diego one) and Santa Clarita.
Word is, the Mira Mesa store is more "authentic"--the folks who run it
have been operating San Diego Farrell's since 1968.

As I recall, it was called "the Trough." We went there for one of my
brother's birthday parties, and both my brothers and one of their best
friends ordered a trough apiece. I don't remember exactly what was in
them, but it was a LOT of ice cream. They finished theirs and were
awarded buttons that said "I made a pig of myself at Farrell's." This
was in the early 1970's, as I recall. Alas, I haven't seen a Farrell's
around for ages.

To answer the original question on this thread, I love sundae bars,
but try to avoid them, as I always go overboard. What I put in them
depends on what's available, obviously. But my average sundae will
have a scoop each of vanilla and strawberry ice cream, caramel sauce
if it's available, chocolate sauce if not. Whipped cream (Plenty of
it) chopped toasted nuts, and it's just NOT complete without a cherry,
or two or three. Ice cream is one of the great loves for me, but I try
hard to keep it out of my freezer at home. My deal is, if the
temperature outside goes over 100 F, THEN I can buy a pint of ice
cream. The REAL stuff like Hagen-dasz or Ben and Jerry's. If I'm going
to feel guilty, I want real pleasure, first.
