Working for Westinghouse downtown in Gateway (fresh from New York), travelling worldwide, newly single, expense account, cool apartment in a big house... I was a bit old for the school crowd, but I did hang out in some of the local watering holes where we all behaved badly. And most behaved badly very well. One funny story... A group of us Westinghouse people were in Walt Harper's Attic, a jazz club back then, when three gorgeous women came in and sat at a table by themselves. The guys I was with taunted a couple of us (me from New York and another guy from Chicago whose wife worked for Playboy) to go talk to the women and see what we could do. My friend Don and I walked over to the table and he started talking with them. They did that looking away thing to indicate disinterest; short, one-word answers to questions. I walked around them peering under their chairs and under the table until one finally asked me what I was doing. I said that we had been sitting here and I think I lost my Congressional Medal of Honor around here somewhere and would they please help me look for it. One of the women cracked up. Asked if we were part of that noisy crowd over there (pointed to our noisy crowd). Asked if the three of them were part of a bet or something. Short pause... not a bet exactly, (told them the story about being hassled by the guys)... She said for us to sit down and talk with them for a few minutes just to make the other guys squirrely; "Call me Anne." She wrote something on the corner of a napkin and handed it to me very obviously so the guys would see. It said "my phone number." I looked at it very intently as though pondering it and popped it into my mouth, chewed and swallowed (it was a small piece of paper). We sat there for a while in animated conversation and left just before their dates joined them. The six of them had a very spirited conversation with the occasional glance in our direction and I'm sure they told the guys the story. Our colleagues were suitably impressed that we'd made such obvious progress with them. Even wrote me a phone number, they were led to believe... Later, I walked with Don back to the Pittsburgh Hilton and we sat in the lobby for a minute and lo, not to mention behold, the one who had invited us to sit with them came stamping in. She saw us and her face softened slightly; I waved her over. She came. Said "Men are pigs." I said, "Fine, and yourself...?" She laughed and told us about her knuckle-dragger blind date. The three of us went to an all-night diner and hung out till the wee, wee hours. Good conversation. I gave her my business card as we all parted. A week or so later, a messenger delivered a framed picture of the Congressional Medal of Honor to my office. No signature; no name. I have no idea who she was. Never saw her again. Hung it on the wall... Pittsburgh was and remains a terrific place. One blurry weekend, I went to a writers' conference where I got to hang out with John Knowles, Diane Wakoski, Larry King (not that one, the one who wrote Best Little Whorehouse in Texas), Robert Pirsig and several other famous folks whose books I'd read. I don't recall who was the designated driver; it most assuredly wasn't me. Everything they say about writers being heavy drinkers is not true. It's understatement... Pastorio |
