Default Acid and Sugar in Lemonade

Hi all,

I'm posting for my 7 year old daughter. Hope you can help her! She made

lemonade Saturday and added alot of sugar - a whole cup.

I seem to remember from high school I can reduce sourness by adding
baking soda. Did the sugar reduce the acid or hide it?

Just cureous.

Refined sugar is acidic.

The sugar just hides the acidity.

Baking soda really reduces the acidity. If you add baking soda to the
mixture it will start fizzling, as long as there is acid in it.
However, be sure not to add too much baking soda. Intake of too much
baking soda will make you produce a lot of 'air' and may cause purging.

All,

Next time we'll try putting in a teensy bit of baking soda before the
sugar. Hope that will be a little healthier!

Thanks for your help.

Why ?

Acid is NOT BAD for you.

Without it you could not digest food.

There's no such word... "alot".

Why not simply dilute with water... duh

Use "A LOT" (two words) of ice.

Be mindful of the fact that adding baking soda will mean that you're
adding sodium. The relative health risk will depend somewhat on the
intended consumer. If the consumer is a very active, non-overweight
kid, sugar might be better.

The best solution might be aspartame. No sodium, no calories.

The best solution to sour lemonade is miraculin from the miracle berry
(Richadella dulcifica aka Synsepalum dulcificum Daniell),

Biochim. Biophys. Acta 1079(3) 303-7 (1991)

Google
miraculin 1100 hits

100% natural, too.

First Google hit:
http://www.wsu.edu:8080/~brians/errors/alot.html

"Perhaps this common spelling error began because there does exist in
English a word spelled "allot" which is a verb meaning to apportion
or grant. The correct form, with "a" and "lot" separated by a
space is perhaps not often encountered in print because formal writers
usually use other expressions such as "a great deal," "often,"
etc. If you can't remember the rule, just remind yourself that just
as you wouldn't write "alittle" you shouldn't write
"alot.""

BORE-ON MORON

"Google" was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 1999. It was
the Word of the Year.

http://www.at-web.de/google/stories/googlen.htm
and in German.

OED also added googlewhacking and google bombing.

Google
googling 557,000 hits

Actually it is. Made the dictionary last year IIRC

Those are not dictionary entrys for "Google", they'rre merely articles
for discussion.

The New Oxford Dictionary of English is the first dictionary of British
English online. This new dictionary from Oxford, the leading authority
on the English language, is designed to reflect the way language is
used today. Offering a fresh and different approach, it contains
numerous encyclopedic entries, notes on grammar, and help with
questions of usage. The New Oxford Dictionary of English is also
available in print.

We actually have a miracle fruit tree in our yard. It really is amazing
how much it changes the taste of things - give me a lemon and a miracle
fruit over the sweetest orange you can find any day.
Things that already do taste sweet are absolutely disgusting for about
half an hour after chewing a berry though.

But even Google agrees "alot" is not a word. Notice in the upper right
hand corner "alot" is not underlined. That means Google didn't find the
word at www.dictionary.com.

Sorry that is not so. Refined sugar is almost pure sucrose which is not
acidic, very near to neutral I would say.

Oh, I should have been more clear. The amount of sugar (1 cup) seemed
like a lot so I thought if the acid was less, we could take some out.

It balances it. Just as wine with no acidity is unbalanced, lemonade
with no sugar is unbalanced.

OK. "acidifying"

5. Sugar. Especially white sugar or high fructose corn syrup. Anything with
sugar added will increase it's acidifying properties immensely.

Just how much lemonade are we talking about? For a standard 2 quart
pitcher 1 cup of sugar is not too much. Lemonade is SUPPOSE to have
that sweet/tart taste. Food doesn't always have to be "healthy".

Where and when did I wrote 'alot is a word'? Show me the place and
I will eat my hat.

What I was pointing at was that there are many real words that are much
less frequent used on the net than 'alot'. 8.6 million hits is a lot.
Pencil makes 9 milion hits, moron makes 2 million, bore 6.7 million,
even Sheldon makes less hits than 'alot', although I am not sure
whether 'Sheldon' is a word. But then English is my second language.
