BUMMER! Looks like I'm off on a quest for another usenet server. :-(

Thanks for the heads-up though!

The price is not bad. 10 EURO's/ year if paid annually. About $13.

Crap. Here I was trying to get the company IT people to let that be an
available news server to help with our chronic usenet service problems.
Oh well.

If I have to pay, I might as well subscribe to one that supports binaries.
MSN's lack of Usenet support reallyi sucks!

Ever wonder about those people who spend $2.00 apiece on those little

I see the info on their homepage; how'd you hear about it?
Price sure seems fair enough and I've been pleased with their service
for three years or so. That it was free of charge was just a bonus.

I got an email from them about an hour ago.

For 10 € per year, I'll probably keep using it -- if they will accept
payment in dollars.

Looks like I'm gonna be going back to Charter. It comes with the internet
package, and I have no problem with it, except that there are a LOT of
double posts. It just got annoying.

Thanks for letting us know!

Someone in another newsgroup posted the info. I think I will keep it
too. I manage to blow $13 on less useful things.

They emailed me today. I've been letting my Individual.net account
slide, anyway, even though it appears many of my posts via koyote.com
don't get broadcast very widely.

AFAIK it's run out of a university in Berlin, it never really had commercial
sponsors.

I don't know of any free Usenet service still extant.

My hypothesis is that it's more fallout from AOL canceling usenet
service. Lots and lots of AOLers looking around for an alternative,
people recommending the German server, waves of new applicants, etc.

I wasn't on usenet for the beginning of the Endless September. My first
lil post was to alt.test, Nov 29 1994.

I'm watching everything going on with NNTP/Usenet access and can
honestly say that I think it's a dying forum.

Blogs have pretty much killed it.

But binaries are apparently thriving...

Blog frankly bore me, there is no interaction. I can go to a bar and listen

As I understand it, the majority of the income that ISPs generate come from
their business customers. Those customers have no need for Usenet so it's
not promoted. Consequently, most home users either don't know that Usenet
exists or don't know what it's for.

Usenet isn't a money-generating service and is poorly supported by most
ISPs. Some, AOL being a good example, are even dropping it. The only
people making money off of Usenet are those businesses whose sole job is to
offer it.

The availability of broadband service is also killing Usenet. Usenet was
never really designed to offer binaries - it's basically a text service.
But with so many people posting and downloading mp3s, video and porno, the
infrastructure in place to support the text groups are being overburdened
by those customers who are trading in binaries. It's putting the ISPs in
the awkward position of having to decide whether or not to outlay the cash
to upgrade a service most of their customers don't use or dropping it all
together.

Mark my words - in a few more years all of the ISPs will be outsourcing
Usenet service.

And good luck. I cruised around in half-ernest over 2 days trying to
figure out the stupid clicknet routine. You have to give them credit
card info before you can even get a login id. And, today, somehow I
ended up at a page that said I had mis-keyed login data too many
times. It then sent me to a page which switched from English to
German, where I knew just enough from high school to see that they
were asking for my mother's maiden name and birthdate. Could this
possibly have been an elaborate identity theft scheme from the
beginning. I find it hard to believe, but the evidence . . . .

MSN dropped their general Usenet service, which wasn't very good to begin
with. They only offer MS-related groups now. AT&T and Earthlink seem to
still have decent offerings.

Charter cable has good service, too. My only problem with them is that I
get a lot of double posts.

OK, I went for it, against my better judgement. Received 3
confirmation emails from Clickgate and one from Individual.net,
assuring me that all is well. I spent several years searching out
free usenet servers. It was OK, except that every so often, the one I
was using would disappear and the search would be on again, screwing
up my newsreader with thousands of old posts. NIN isn't the best
place in the world, doesn't carry all the newsgroups. But my
experience over the last couple of years is that it's fast, reliable
(even when run as a volunteer venture) and it carries the few groups I
WANT. So, today, the euro translated to $13.55 US for a year of
service. Not exactly something to lose sleep over. And if you click
"United States" to start, you end up (although you won't realize it at
the time) dealing with Clickgate International, a firm in New York
City, New York. YMMV.

Not being an individual.net subscriber, I don't know what
you don't like about Clikgate. But if you're alarmed, you
may want to try this:

Honestly, I had never heard of them. I'm always very concerned about
giving out my credit card number, especially to what I thought was
another country, where God only knows the jurisdictional pitfalls.

I'm not sure what the connection is but I still thank you for the
link. Using the hosts file for blocking is common, but this is a much
more interesting and useable approach - I'll give it a thorough read.

I met my husband via Bitnet in 1984. Been married almost 20 years, so I
guess it worked. :-)

Sorry about the confusion. You probably didn't see earlier posts and

concerned about a credit card purchase with an unknown in a different

I see where we got our wires crossed. Thanks again for the link.
