Fried pizza dough

Anyone make that? The first time I heard of it, my ex made it.
Sure didn't sound all that good to me. Well, he bought some
pizza dough, rolled it out cut into strips and fried them in vegetable
oil. When cooked, sprinkle with sugar.

I just had some now only it was made more like a pancake.

They're like zeppole only better.

My guilty food.

Classic pizza dough is really just bread dough. My Basque
mother-in-law took bread dough and twisted into fat fingers, deep fried
them, and sprinkled sugar on them and that was her family's version of
churros. Great at breakfast!

My wife grew up on that. It was a weekly treat.

Friends of ours make it as an accompaniment to breakfast on those days that
want something a little fancy. They gave it a French name and it was a
flat shape eaten with butter.

I'd brush it with butter and add both sugar _and_ cinnamon. ;-)

They make a baked pizza crust like that as a dessert at Gatti's.

Their cherry and apple cobbler pizza is also do die for.

Gonna be a long time before I can enjoy such treats again!
<whimper> At least a year of all goes well.

Yup, pizza fritta.

We used to have it at extended family get-togethers (shaped more like
flat pieces of bread (I put butter on it); my grandmother or older
cousins did the frying. I don't make much in the way of fried foods,
so haven't had it in a long time.

My favorite pizza fritta was at the New York State Fair.
