Default So we finally discovered Yukon Golds - holy cow!

We are both fairly resistent to trendy food items, particularly those
which are harped on TV Food shows. But not long ago, she comes home
and says, "I think you'll like these." I said "aren't they a lot more
expensive?". She replies " no, they're the same price - the bag just
weighs less". Although I know I stared blankly at her for an unknown
time period - fortunately for me I had recently downloaded and
installed the newest update to the "Magic Marriage Management"
software I had installed in my brain a number of years ago. It
apparently has new features which allowed me to ignore said statement
and just move on. These things are fantastic. She made the best
potato soup and clam chowder I have ever had. Saturday, she fixed me
a Tuna steak, brocolli, carrots, cauliflower, homemade bread and a
small pile of unpeeled YG. Heaven on a plate. Saturday night she
threw some in the crockpot with a pork roast. For 10 HOURS!!! I
guess it's impossible to make the things turn to mush. Good eatin'.

Sounds great. They make nice buttery mashed potatoes, too. I really
like them.

And they are easily found in seed catalogs and no harder to raise than any
of the others.

For some reason my local Asian owned produce market carries organic
ones at prices similar to what Safeway and other supermarkets charge
for conventionally grown. Go figure.

The organic ones taste even better, IMHO. I limit my intake of regular
potatoes because of the extraordinary number of pesticides used on
them. When Parents' magazine, a very mainstream publications, suggests
you choose organic potatoes, green beans and spinach for your children
because of pesticide residue issues, then you know it's not just a
wacko's complaint. But YMMV

The Yukon Gold potato was developed at the Ottawa Ontario Central
Experimental Farm in 1980. I have grown it for many years. It is ready to
harvest in 60 DAYS whereas many other types require 90 days or more. In
addition, it has good resistance to many potato pathogens including the
dreaded potato blight. This reduces the cost of production and this variety
has a superior yield. IT COSTS A HELLAVA LOT LESS TO GROW THAN OTHER STRAINS
OF POTATO. In my local clip joint/ supermarket there were 10 lbs of regular
white potatoes (Probably Kennebec) for sale for a mere $2.99. Ten pounds of
Yukon Gold were offered for $3.99. This is nothing more than profiteering.
Sure, they taste really good but you are getting screwed!!!! Try growing
some yourself.
