Ever since I heard about this I've had to try it. Can a bloke get this
locally in the States? Preferably locally, in Orange County, CA? Thanks, Matt |

I'm not from that area, but; World Market stores in my area carry it. World Market's website show they have a store in Orange CA; perhaps it will also carry Vegemite. |

Also try any of a number of British specialty shops scattered across the county; in particular, try Flavour of Britain in San Juan Capistrano. -- Chris Green |

But Uranium decays, vegemite doesn't. I've got a jar in the fridge which was virginal until about July last year (2004). It was in "as new" condition in spite of the Use By date of Sep 1983. (How long do you expect black salt to last anyway? ;-) Cheers, Phred. -- LID |

A fair substitue can be had by blending anchovies in a blender with vaseline and letting it set for a couple years Other wise, try a World Market? > |

OK, if you buy your Vegemite from there you should also go into their Crackers section and order some VitaWeats so you can partake in a ritual played out by thousands of Aussie kids over the years. Take a Vitaweat and spread with butter and Vegemite. Place another Vitaweat on top and squeeze it down so that the butter and Vegemite squeezes out through the holes in the Vitaweat like little worms! Never worked for me, because I've never liked my Vegemite with butter. Vegemite's also nice on SAOs which they also have in their Crackers section. When I was quite small, shops here didn't open on Sundays. We never had fresh bread left on Monday morning, so Mum would give me SAOs with Vegemite or peanut butter for lunch for school. But I have never heard of Vegemite along with peanut butter; thought they were antithetical substances as most people I've talked to say that Australians dislike peanut butter as much as Americans dislike Vegemite. Interesting thing, our world. pavane |

Interesting thing, our world. > There was always peanut butter in our house, and there's plenty of it on the supermarket shelves (Skippy made an appearance a few years ago, not sure if it's still there). No general dislike as far as I know. However, I don't think Australian peanut butters have as much sugar in them as US ones.I actually stopped buying the mainstream peanut butters which have oil, salt and sugar added to them, and now buy Sanitarium brand natural peanut butter (just peanuts, nothing else). My mum liked peanut butter and honey sandwiches, but "peanut butter and jelly" is something I only ever heard about on US tv shows. You find jams and conserves on the shelves here, rather than jelly - only really a few jellies, and they tend to be the ones used as condiments (like mint). There was a product marketed at kids called "Jelly Jam" - marketed as jam without the seeds! Don't think it's still available though. On hearing the word jelly, most Australians would probably think of the gelatine dessert - so, as a child, I did think peanut butter and jelly sandwiches sounded pretty weird, until I had the different meaning of jelly explained to me <g>. If you're looking for more things to buy from SimplyOz, and you like ginger, - try the Buderim Ginger Bears. They're like little gummi bears, but ginger flavoured - they're listed in their Ginger category. Really nice. Also, in their plain biscuits category try the Butternut Snap Cookies (which were always just called butternut biscuits when I was growing up!) They're a lovely biscuit. I made a double crust baked cheesecake the other week - the recipe used these to make the crust, along with chopped toasted hazelnuts. I took the cheesecake to work ,where it went in a hurry, and several people commented that they usually left the base on a cheesecake, but that they actually liked this one. I'll have to look more through SimplyOz's site and let you know if I see any more favourites <g> Rhonda Anderson Cranebrook, NSW, Australia |

I don't know if the British specialty shops would have Vegemite as it's from Oz. But they probably would have Marmite which everyone in the know knows is much better... -- Cheers Dennis Remove 'Elle-Kabong' to reply |

Thanks all. Found it at Cost Plus. Haven't had a chance to see if
Trader Joes or the local supermarkets have it. Interestingly, Cost Plus had 4 oz jars of Vegemite and 4 oz jars of Marmite. The Vegemite was $2.99 and the Marmite was $5.99. I bought the Veg first to see if I liked it, but I'm very curious if the Marmite price difference is reflected in the taste. Oh the taste... Extremely salty, full of yeasty goodness. Very concentrated. A little dab'll do ya. Let's see what kinds of uses I can find for it. Matt |
