Default Old favorites - ridiculous prices

So, I've been searching for some old favorites - some from long ago,
some from only a few years ago. They really are putting to us mid to
old-timers through the ringer. Here's some examples:
Ralston wheat hot breakfast cereal - 12.90/3 boxes
Maypo - 12.90 /3 boxes
Campbell's Scotch broth soup - 9.90/2 cans
Horlick's Malted Milk Tablets - 4 boxes/14.95
Blackjack gum - 1 buck a pack of 5 sticks
Devon or Clotted cream (get ready) 9.95 for 5.6 ounces
How can this be? Ralston was my favorite hot breakfast cereal until a
few years ago, now it is like precious metals. Until a few years ago,
my wife made a really excellent dessert called "butter-pecan torte"
which relied on Jello B_P pie filling and pudding. Out of production.
I guess it's all part of the great right (or left) wing conspiracy.
sigh.

My sister loved this when we were children -- Pepper Pot, too. Wonder
if they still make Pepper Pot?

I bought some cans of it a couple months ago for $1/can at a dollar
store here in Chicago. It was very salty.

I remember this cereal. Cold leftovers would congeal so much you could
slice it and fry it. Weird childhood memory. That is, weird memory
from childhood, not memory of weird childhood. Well, then again....

For years I never saw this in stores. Then I changed
geography to central US and it is in stores here. I
remember "I want my Maypo" commercials on TV when I
was a kid in the 1960s.

A lot but that particular type has always been one of
the more expensive types, in addition to being one of
my favorites.

Only imported in my experience.

One of my regular choices until it disappeared from west coast stores.

I understand authentic Scotch broth is made from lamb stock. I never
checked the label, was that the case with Campbell's?

Seems to me some other Campbell's soup flavors have disappeared over
the last few years with the introduction of the Southwestern and Asian
soups. Can anyone identify the "the disappeared"?

outstanding.

According to the description at Vermont Country Store, it is still
made with lamb broth. But after Default User gave the link to
http://www.hometownfavorites.com, I certainly won't go to VCS unless I
have no other choice.

U.S. Senate bean soup is legitimate. They've served it in Senate
cafeterias for decades. Navy beans, or little white ones, ham hock,
etc.. There are recipes for it in the rfc archives.

I was also sorry to see the demise of Campbell's frozen soups, in
particular the Cream of Shrimp Soup. You could make a killer dip with it.
Their canned version makes a horrid dip.

As much as like Vermont Country Store, and I do order some "impossible to
find" items, here's a better price on the Pepper pot Soup - $1.69 per can.
They have quite a few other varieties, including Scoth Broth.

I've found the Vermont Country Store products outrageously over priced.

Agreed. And thank God I listened to you all before I ordered from
them. I still might order "something" from them, but not if I find it
cheaper elsewhere.
