Default SAN DIEGO 2005 COOK-IN

I am pleased to announce that this year's San Diego R.F.C. Cook-In will be
held on Saturday June 25th. Once again we will gather at the Barto's Estate
in the hills above Poway. With all the rain we have had, the hills should be
covered with wildflowers. You have 3 months to set the day aside! No
slackers! If you wish to confirm or if you have questions about this cook-in
or cook-ins in general feel free to contact me at .
If you are not in my address book you will be stuck in my spam trap for a
day. Please put SD Cook-In in your subject line -- else I may think you are
trying to rob me of my meager pension via hacking. You can, of course, ask
or confirm here.

I can assure you that the San Diego cook-ins are the bestest there be in all
the land. Actually, I think we are the last to have traditional Cook-Ins. We
have much fun, booze, gossip (trashing non-attendees), booze, and
unbelievably wonderful and copious food plus booze! I plan to plead, cry,
beg, supplicate, flop on the floor, hold my breath, and vaguely threaten to
injure myself in the hope that Katherine Barto will make more rum-oozing
brownies. I think we have already have folks signed up for Kay's
Margaritas, Cosmopolitans and some orange liqueur. In Curly Sue's honor we
will resurrect our game of nude horseshoes once again. <grin>

So. Check for those inexpensive air fares to San Diego, ban the death of
relatives (unless needed for an employer or such), and cash in that income
tax refund. You will all be welcomed with a hug and frequently with a kiss.
If you haven't been to a Southern California Cook-In, you will be guaranteed
to make new friends. Many will be life-long friends who care and value each
other. I will add on a personal note, life-changing friends. Our list of
attendees so far include: Terry and Bill, Debra, Katherine and David Barto,
Koko and (I hope daughter and husband?), Jamie and her beer toting sweetie
Brian, Christine, yours truly, and I hope Rich McC. and his son and
super-delightful daughter-in-law. I hope the new date will enable Charlotte
to attend. I hope that the Macleods can attend this year (Peter's pork still
is in my taste thoughts as the best I've ever had). I think I left someone
out, but we still have a long time to firm up the attendance! Oh, I shall
badger Meg Worley, Mark Horne, Kay, and Jen (blacksun21) as well. Someday I
will convince Geeta and Shankar to get out here too!

If I can get aholt of some grapevines (San Diego is grape and wine country
so I should) I may make my famous charcoal grilled butterflied leg of lamb.
Trying not to set fire to David's BBQ as we did a couple of years ago. I'm
thinking about some Peruvian Papas too. I'll supply some beer and the
Margaritas. I am well past the days when I would bring 5 or 6 dishes trying
to keep up with Kay Hartman. Her's were always better anyway. <sigh> I sure
do miss her truffles....... but perhaps she and Jack can attend this year!
David Fetter will be hounded (he is so much fun!) as will Jack Schidt, Harry
and Sam, Zelt and Kaari, and Tammy. The other Bay Area, L.A., Arizona and
Other's will get my gentler prodding.

Peace and Love,
Charlie

My 60th birthday, Sweetpea. I'll expect you all to hoist at least one
G&T to my name! I won't be there.

I am going to *try* to be there. This late date in June might take
some canoodling to juggle an assignment and all that. I guess I was
thinking it was going to be earlier in June, rather than later.

I am bringing limoncello, among other things, if I get there.

Hmmmm, maybe we can hold the monthly meeting of the San Diego Home
Roasters at the Cook-In. Let's see, who would roast regular coffee, who
will roast the espresso, who will bring the grinders and machines . . .

That would take care of two of the the three meetings for that day. Now
what to do about graduation . . .

Working on it, working . . .

I am sure I can do something . . .

Too old to travel Barb? :-) We do sometimes have G&Ts. If we don't this
time, we will find a suitable substitute. Maybe I'll serve some Manhattans.
We can share my pickle hats and raise a toast to you!

I'm sorry about that. We had to change the traditional date because the
Bartos had conflicts on the first 2 weekends. As they are the hosts we had
to adjust our dates slightly. I blame them entirely! <grin> Limoncello!
That's it. Sorry I forgot what it was. I often can't remember my own name.

How the heck are we supposed to have cook-ins if you keep missing them? The
trip on the 210 to I-15 on a Saturday morning should be a fairly quick one
down to Poway.

Santa Maria red oak can only mean one thing! My mouth is salivating!!

The Sandeeaygo MacLeods are now the Seattle (Bainbridge Island)
MacLeods...you knew this, Charlie, didn't you? They're awfully mobile
so you never know with them.

I'm hoping they host a NW cook-in sometime. We hope to be more mobile
in the future than we have been recently. But because we no longer have
in-laws in San Diego, it's just unlikely that we'll be attending, so
sorry Charlie...

Fondly,

Ambiguous. Meaning, they might return to SD for the cook-in because
they travel a lot.

I hope they do! I so enjoyed them at the 2003 October cook-in!

Debbie and I discovered that we have a favorite cookbook in common:
Lulu's Provencal Table, by Richard Olney, and we had talked about
making bouilliabase from that book at the next SD cook-in. Alas, it
didn't happen, as I couldn't make it to the cook-in and I don't think
she did either.

Hmm...now thinking about bouilliabase.....

Santa Maria is the birth place of a very special tri tip.

Go here and watch the video.

The flavor the wood imparts IMHO is unequaled.

No! I didn't know that. Our loss is Bainbridge Island's gain. It is a lovely
place.

I had hoped you and family could get down here sometime for a cook-in. I
certainly understand the difficulty you have doing it though. A Northwest
Cook-In would be fun. It has been a while since I've been up there. I missed
the last one at the Zelt household. A Bainbridge Island cook-in would be a
good excuse for me to visit Port Angeles one of my favorite places!

Yippee, skippee! A bit late to this thread, as I've been in trial
since Feb. 1 and the jury just got it late this afternoon, but the
25th looks doable. Would offer to bring marinated plaintiff's lawyer,
but likely too tough to chew and would leave a horrible aftertaste.
Looking forward to the bash, Charlie, and many thanks for your
unflagging efforts as to the SoCal cookins.

Yes I believe so but you know, I didn't check the return addy on the
last e-mail!! But they are so organized about techy stuff that I'll bet
e-mails to old addy would get forwarded. And BIL Pete is with the same
company, just different office, so you can always use his work addy.

I don't automatically reject canabilism, but on a technical matter, aren't
all lawyers marinated from the inside out?

My pleasure Terry. It is entirely selfish I assure you. I love having a

Heh, heh! I understand. Anyway, that is MY job. I'm good at volunteering
people. I shall leave Peter and that cutie Debbie alone for a while. The
next folks I'm going to badger are the ones in the L.A. area. We haven't had
an August L.A. Cook-In for a long time.

Well, the SBF and I are scratching our collective heads about your cookin.
Will be heading to the Bay area during 4th of July period for Amy's wedding.
Not sure what we can do with the schedule. But, Chas, it does give us pause.
Will keep you informed.

Alan<--- who just had his "traditional" St. Patrick's day dinner of CB,
cabbage and spuds. Washed down with Cel-ray tonic!!!! Thought that would
make you queasy on both accounts. There is a place in Seattle called
Market Meat, that sells only CB and pastrami. Nothing else in the whole
store. Been open for eons. Just take it home and put it in oven with a mix
of water and coke, and slow bake, covered. Just as good as CB in the Apple.

Do you scratch your own heads, scratch each other's, or switch back and
forth? Do your collective legs twitch in simpathy? These are important
issues.

A patriotic wedding! You must be vibrating with mixed emotions. There is no
contest here though. There is no doubt of the importance of a wedding over a
cook-in.

I admire and love the Boston-Irish tradition of CB and cabbage! But the
Cel-ray!!! <gag and gack!> It would be so much better with gallons of strong
Irish tea.

Oh! How I wish we such a place here. the folks on our local San Diego food
newsgroup has discussed this issue many times. It is a greatly felt dishonor
to our community not to have decent corned beef and pastrami.

If you and Kaari find you can make it, you would both be welcomed with open
arms to our Cook-In. Let me know if there is any change.

I thought I did post something about it on sdnet. Perhaps it was during your
switchover to your new place of residence. I invited Jim Lane and he
attended last year. It was really nice to get a better understanding of each
other. He is a very nice guy.

Sheesh, and here I am trying my best to present my not-so-good side.
Hoping to meet serene in person, too. Now about that conflict in

Hmm, don't get me started on that line.

Well, I was just not in the mood for building a Guinness.

The fabric of life is greatly enriched by one or two food items that carry
you through on the journey. A good CB has always been one for me. Plenty
left for laying down between two slices of homemade sour onion rye bread!!

When thinking about you, I recall dinner at Flying Fish a few years back. A
good night. Speaking of which, Kris Keff, chef extraordinaire at FF is also
head of national womens' chef group. She sent a letter to the Shrub's wife,
suggesting it was high time for a female chef in the White House. She may
just have a good point there. Seattle has always been home to a large and
excellent group of distaff chefs.

You would not believe how many times I think about the Flying Fish (and the
glass of Diablo Porto I had there). I'll bet that not a two week period goes
by that I don't think of it. The lovely Parmesiano Reggiano lace and that
wonderful high-butterfat sweet and unsalted butter on the wonderful rolls
and breads. Outstanding wine choices. The company couldn't have been better
either. Dear Sam gave up her seat to let me sit on the outside when she
found I was having an anxiety attack. You and Kaari are excellent hosts and
the Flying Fish will always be high in my esteme. I'd love to visit it
again. I'm glad to hear the Chef Keff is still at the helm. There was an
article about her and the FF in the AAA magazine not too long ago. Sandy
Eggo too has long been home to a large and excellent group of women chefs.
The male chefs tend to make a name here then move on to more money and fame.
The women have stamina and seem to believe in sticking with their faithful
fans.

Don't worry about it Jim. It is working fine. <giggle>

Excellent! Will you lift a Bohemia with me? I won't mention that I actually
prefer Pacifico most of the time. It is light and bubbly like me.

You a Pacifico, me a Negra Modelo more than likely. Bohemia is good too.
In fact a mediocre beer is made much better by one's drinking companions
so we could share a Coors and be all the better for it. ;->

We should stock up on it then! I frequently just drink whatever Jamie's DH
brings -- lovely man; always loaded down with beer!

Thank you. It is not so much the embarassment of it, but the heckling one
must put up with (or up with which one must put).
