Just got a call from Damsel (Carol). She and Crash are at a motel for at
least the next couple of days. The fusebox in the basement decided to do a
melt-down in the middle of the night. If Crash hadn't awakened... well
let's just say the basement was thick with smoke but it hadn't made it
upstairs yet nor was anything yet in flames. They and their pets got out
safely. The power company has shut off all power to their house until
further inspection can be done; it appears they will have to have it
rewired.

Yeah, it sucks. Absolutely make sure the batteries are fresh. Mine start
beeping at me; I'm exremely fortunate in that in my apartment, they change
out the smoke alarm batteries twice a year (two alarms, single level). I
also used to have to pick up a new filter for my heater/AC unit; they do
that, too, as well as supply and check the fire extinquisher in the kitchen.

As long as neither are opened -- not even to check to see if things are
okay -- the stuff in the freezer should be fine, especially if the
freezer's mostly full. I'm thinking the fridge stuff will be good for
at least a day. The key to the frozen is to NOT open the door. Or
rent a generator.

Sheesh, what a thing to happen.

Losing a few groceries is a lot better than losing their house. Thank
goodness they and their pets got out safely, and there was no fire

Thanks for posting this Jill. Please relay my concern and gratefulness for
their safety and hopes that she'll be back soon. As someone who survived two
house fires, I can say that there's nothing so simultaneously frustrating
and blessed.

Just about every city in the US has a commercial ice house (check your
yellow pages and place the address and phone number on your fridge),
most will have "dry ice" or will know the nearest place to get some.
Dry ice is inexpensive and lasts a long time... a block each the size
of a shoebox, wrapped in a few layers of newspaper, will keep both
fridge and freezer compartment fine for about three days.

I asked the ringleader of the fire fighter's gang that showed up what would
have happened if Crash hadn't awakened. He said our house would have
burned to the ground. He's also going to give the City Electric Inspector
some good-natured shit. He was here on February 28th, and slapped his
sticker of approval inside the door of the fuse box.

It was determined by the electrician to be Just One of Those Things. The
main fuse had gotten a little loose and one thing led to another. When
Crash went down there, it was in the process of melting. The wonderful
electrician just left. We have a brand-new, big circuit breaker box, and
heat! We have heat! When we came over here yesterday, the inside
temperature was 61. This morning, it was 51. Now it's a balmy 68. I feel
like frolicking nude after being so cold for so long, but I don't want to
frighten the neighbors.

The Red Cross came and arranged for lodging for us (the lack of heat and
the stench of burning electrical stuff prevented us from staying home the
past two nights), gave us some "Clean-Up Kits" (toiletries so we wouldn't
reek from the fumes), and a homemade quilt for each of us that are ours to
keep. I will always cherish these tangible reminders of the goodness of
other people when we needed it the most. Those quilts are priceless.

The motel is not one that I would recommend to anyone. When we came home
from there yesterday morning, our unheated house was a lot warmer than our
room there. I was also pretty excited to find a roach bait thingie with
one of our dog's teeth marks in it. Oh ... we considered stealing the
ice bucket and tray for glasses and stuff and returning them to Day's Inn
and the Ramada. Yup, this was a high-class joint.

First thing I did when the power was restored was to check the meat in the
freezer. It's all hard as a rock. Whew! I've been fretting over all that
meat the entire time we were without power. There's a whole ham, a turkey,
a huge slab of brisket, and a bunch of roasts and stuff. Thank goodness.
I honestly thought that we were going to be roasting/grilling everything
and freezing the cooked meat. I'm relieved. It's better when the stuff is
freshly prepared.

In the past 36 hours, I've had 5 hours of sleep (not all at once). I'm
gonna go through my e-mails and take a lonnnnnnnnnnng nap!

They just quietly show up, unasked, and help. A lot of people don't
realize they do this for individuals in need, not just for major
disasters. When my sister's home burned and she and her husband were
standing stunned in the street, they did the same (minus the quilt!)
with zero fanfare or announcement of their presence.

Check with your insurance company about your policy and see if it
covers smoke damage. There are companies that will come in & clean
walls, carpets, drapes, upholstered pieces, etc., and get rid of the
smell.

And call your MD to be sure you have your meds handy, just it case it
really gets to you!

I'm so glad you are safe and sound! What a nice thing for the Red Cross
to do! Wishing you the best as you start the cleanup and I hope the
cost of re-wiring is not too high. I hate it when a repair is forced
upon me. It usually happens when we are least prepared. Can you put
the repair through you household insurance?

Yeppers! But the cranberries in the refrigerator freezer were mushy. We
bought ten bags of them when they were on sale after Christmas. I'm giving
serious consideration into making a gigantic batch of cranberry-orange
relish and freezing it in small containers.

little smoke damage. The main floor is just fine. No problem. What
really ****es me off (about myself) is that I had done a million loads of
laundry and stacked it all on a kitchen table I use for folding clean
clothes. I never brought the stuff upstairs and put it away. If I had, I
wouldn't have to re-wash 75% of our clothing. I think what we had was more
fumes than smoke. Visible fumes, but not smoke in the usual sense of the
word. I'm sure some electricity-savvy person will know what I'm talking
about and translate that statement into English.

My nebulizer is plugged in and ready to be used at a moment's notice, and I
hoard inhalers, so there's at least one in every room of the house, and one

It's the only thing that keeps a person going sometimes. If I wrote an
autobiography, no one would believe everything that one person had gone
through. But, like I keep reminding Crash ... a lot of horrible things
happen to us, but they happen in the best way possible. I don't know why,
but we're being watched over, and I'm very grateful for that love and
protection.

I was just changed from albuterol to Xopenex, because the albuterol
make me feel like I had 20 cups of espresso (that is the food
reference that makes this post on topic). I do not know how new it
is, but my doc offered it when I told her about the shakes after
treatments

The Xopenex gives a bit of a buzzy feeling, but nothing like the
albuterol. The only trick is that albuterol is generic, and so it is
much cheaper than Xopenex. If you have good med insurance coverage,
ask your doc about it. It makes a big diff to me in how I feel after
treatment. I am fortunate that my plan covers it. (I also got them to
cover a portable, battery run nebulizer that is way smaller than a can
of soda.)

What about Advair or Singulair? Tried either or both?

I don't really think I'm coping all that well, frankly. Aside from the
physical problems I have when I lie down, I think there's something inside
of me that's scared to sleep. Crash, the dogs, and the cat have been doing
nothing but sleep ever since this happened. They're all asleep now, as a
matter of fact. I think I got about an hour's sleep just now. I'm getting
shaky from fatigue.

The guy with the big red truck called the lady from the Red Cross. It was
so special to me that she'd get out of bed in the middle of the night to
help total strangers. Our local chapters of the Red Cross and the
Salvation Army will be remembered in my will.

Yes, the repair is being billed to our household insurance. I'm not sure
what our deductible is, but I'm sure I'll find out soon enough. In the
meantime, ignorance is bliss.
