Ew.

Sorry, I am just not a SPAM fan. :-P
Too salty and has a "gritty" texture that I just don't care for...
I'll also pass on the cilantro. It's barely bearable in salsa/picante
sauces.

I'll stick with the Rotel/Velveeta dip for corn chips. Leave it hot in a
small crock pot and you are good to go........

Or better yet, mom's clam dip which is fabulous on potato chips and
snack crackers.

1 10 oz. carton "real" sour cream
1 medium can chopped baby clams
1 tsp. fresh minced parsely
1 tsp. onion powder
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
1 tsp. dried dill weed

Dump all ingredients into a bowl and mix well with a fork.
Serve with potato chips and wheat thins. Also makes a decent
dip for celery sticks and other veggies.

You can substitute canned shrimp for canned clams for a nice
shrimp dip.

Add about 1/2 the liquid from the cans, or more for a "wetter" dip
depending on your preference.

My favorite Sunday Snack (when I'm not dieting anyway) is the following:

Bean Nachos:

1 can ranch style pinto beans
1/2 cup shredded jack cheese
1 tsp. chile powder

Place beans into a blender and blend until smooth.
Mix shredded cheese in with a fork and add chile powder.

Dump onto a microwave save dish, (pyrex pie plates are ideal), top with
corn chips and shredded chedder/jack cheese. Nuke until all the cheese
is melted then top lightly with mild or medium Pace chunky picante sauce
and sour cream. Serve some guacamole' on the side if desired.

The bean and cheese by itself, heated gently, also makes a wonderful
hot bean dip.

So even Hormel acknowledges that you have to adulterate the hell out of
it to make it eatable?

Instead, start with the same quantity of Underwood Deviled Ham, halve
the quantities of worcestershire, bell pepper, celery, eliminate the
salsa and cilantro, add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. Be sure to
chop the veggies very fine. -aem

Another crock pot snack:

8 oz cream cheese
small jar chipped beef, chopped
milk
1 tsp dry mustard
1/4 cup green onions, chopped

I'm not sure about the proportions anymore, since it's been years since I
made this. I'd try a cup of milk to start with. Put the milk and cheese
into the crockpot. Turn it on and stir occasionally until the cheese is
melted and combined with the milk. Add the other ingredients and stir
in. Let it sit a little while so everything gets warm and the flavors
combine. Serve with crusty French bread cut into bite-sized cubes. Use
fondue forks to dip the bread into the dip.

We like life simpler (and fewer dirty dishes):

1 can refried beans
1/2 cup grated cheese
salsa to taste

Mix together in a microwaveable bowl. Nuke and mix until cheese has
melted and combined with everything. Serve with tortilla chips.

I like Spam, but very rarely, and then I only like it fried in
slices for breakfast, especially when camping.

I'm with you there, Katra -- I don't like cilantro at all.

This sounds very good, but can you suggest a substitute for
the dill? I'm sorry to say, I can't tolerate dill for some
reason -- it gives me the shivers when I try to eat it. Hmmm,
and I tell DH *he's* picky about food...

Or use Underwood roast beef..... ;-d

A little pickle relish and mayo, chopped celery and the cream cheese.

That sounds good! :-)
I might substitute shallots for the green onions, tho'.
I like the garlicky flavor that they add.

I've never used Chipped beef! How salty is it?
Cream cheese does cut back on salty flavors which
is why I like it with caviar. (Romanoff canned, not the
fresh, expensive stuff <G>)

Yeah, but I like the way making the nachos WITH the rest in the nuke
softens them slightly, and that is really pretty good...

Yours is simpler tho' <G>

There is also a totally different flavor with the ranch style beans than
with the refrieds.

The turkey spam that dad has been buying lately actually is not too bad.
The texture is much better and it's ok fried too, or grilled in the
foreman. I don't eat much of it but dad likes to make grilled spam and
cheese sandwiches with it in the grill.

Seems to be about 50/50 split in the population on that one. <lol>

You can just leave it out, or try some parsley leaf. :-)
Dill goes well with seafood but it's not necessary if you don't care for
it. Some salt free lemon pepper can add a little "zest" to it.

Nope. Many of their recipes suggest eating it right as it comes from
the can, plus fried, baked, and grilled... and that's typically how the
vast majority is consumed... the more involved concoctions are merely
suggestions, which I doubt get prepared very often. Although the Spam
dip is pretty good.

Now that Underwood stuff is absolutely gross, it looks and smells worse
than my cat's hair ball puke.

O Golly,.. Goodies

You's gotta use Velveeta cheese in lieu of cream cheese in the "authentic
recepie" The Spam must be gently sautéed to the 'nut brown' stage..then
macerated with the herbs, spices, condiments, veggies of regional choice.
Substituting "Deviled" Ham is not acceptable in the South. Cucumber,
mayonnaise finger sandwiches for the 'afternoon tea'. Bless the 'blue haired
little fading Scarlet O'Hara's in their lavender print dresses'. Argue with
them... if you dare!
Enough of this for now. I read and learn from you all. I have lurked for
years, and am just now posting. I firmly believe the cooking and the ethos of
the country/region is important. I post serious stuff at times, take it and
understand the underlying humor.

Miss Ella Von Claws/Wits, my intrepid Shop Cat just informed me that she is
incensed with your disparaging remark about her, feminine, feline
sensibilities.

I'm with you, Dan but we prefer to use the velveeta cheese recipe.

1 lb velveeta cheese, diced in 1" cubes
1 can chili (recipe calls for hormel, duh, but use what you like.)

Stir ingredients together in a microwavable-safe bowl and nuke for about
10-15 minutes stirring about every 3 minutes.

I'm stating the times and ingredients from memory. The recipe is on the
velveeta box.

On a variation I do is to substitute the canned chili with about a pound of
left-over taco-seasoned meat. Ok, this doesn't happen very often since
homemade tacos get et pretty damn quick around here with almost no left-over
meat.

You a sponsor for hormel now? I think I'll try the recipe but I'll fry the

If your cats hairball puke smells, kitty needs to see the vet!
Our cats hairball barfs are either fairly odorless or smell like the
fresh cat food they just ate prior to ralphing.....

Bret, try Campbell's Chunky Chili - it's the closest to homemade that I've
tasted and one that's actually accepted by my husband. I really dislike
the Hormel or Bush's brands

I'll give it a shot. I'm not a big canned-chili person myself but when you
mix with a bunch of cheese, it's pretty damned tasty!

I agree, but I think it would work fine in your dip recipe.
