How come any time I order goat at some Indian or Mexican place that it
is always loaded with bone? I know that goats aren't nearly as meaty as cows are but one would think that in the course of the thousands of years humans have been breading goats that we would have artifically selected for a good goat steak. Also, the bony cuts are cheaper and thus used more, especially in Caribbean cooking. I hate the bones also, but it's a cultural thing. I must say though that the goat dishes at a local Indian restaurant, which is about the only one in the area that actually uses goat, do not have the bones. When I cook goat I buy a meaty cut and bone it then cut the meat into cubes. > I know that goats aren't nearly as meaty > as cows are but one would think that in the course of the thousands of > years humans have been breading goats that we would have artifically > selected for a good goat steak. > > Where is all the good goat meat? And why are Americans so anti-goat? I don't know if we're "anti-goat" so much as just not used to it. It never became a popular meat here. I love it myself if properly prepared. I like the Caribbean goat curry best. The Indian dishes I don't care for as much, even though I really love Indian food. To my taste the flavor of their sauces don't go as well with the flavor of goat as do the Caribben sauces. I don't know why so many people are anti-goat, but then I don't know why so many are anti-venison, anti-duck, anti-rabbit, et cetera ad nauseum. I think that many are of the mind that if the animal is cute (are goats cute?) then they won't eat it. Personally, it seems to me that the cuter the animal, the more delicious it is. Perhaps they just need to stop making goats the main attraction at so many petting zoos for kids (no pun intended). In the city of North Park in the San Diego area there is a taco shop called "Ray's Taco Shop". Because of the name I avoided it for a long time. It just didn't sound right. Then one day walking past it I saw a thing in the window saying they had birria. So I had to go in. I found it to be the best damn goat stew I have ever had. No website but here is the location: You can find it he <url:http://www.google.com/local?sc=1&hl=en&q=mexican&near=92116&btnG=Google+ Search&rl=1> The next time I go to San Diego I am going make a stop there. My dyslexia read that last bit as 'and nasty critter'. ![]() Yes all of those things are very tasty. While I think at first this American dislike started as a mixture 'thats not normal' during the move to the cities during the first 2 decades of the 20th cent and then became formalized during the Great Depression when for many people /any/ food was a luxury but the farms were only producing the big money makers like cows, and pigs. So now pig, cow, chicken and turkey are the only things Americans eat and as the years went by pigs started to be less fatty, chicken started to taste more like cardboard and cows just got bigger and bigger. In the end Americans relying on a diet of tasteless fast food now just don't like flavor. As a result all of the good things you named above are now seen as not just non-food items but when eaten taste 'funny'. > I think that many are of the mind that > if the animal is cute (are goats cute?) then they won't eat it. The supermarkets used to carry rabbit fairly regularly, for example, and now when I ask for it they give me a blank stare. Goat is sometimes available here at the stores in Spanish-speaking neighborhoods. Beets are widely available except, I think, in Minnesota.... -aem |

There's a stand in the Central Market in L. A. that makes them. Just barbecued goat meat and whatever salsa you want on it. It's a soft taco on a corn tortilla - the only kind to make!! (P. S. I made the mistake of not inquiring about it's ingredients before ordering a soft taco at Taco Bell the other night (yeah, I know, blecch, but I had almost no cash and just needed something to nosh on while my car was being serviced and I was missing dinner - it's cheap and filling and not too bad tasting). They used a plain unheated, ungrilled, un-anything *FLOUR* tortilla! Yuck! What are these people thinking? But I should have known better. You just have to know what to order, and our local one is really good! The crispy tacos are probably what I get the most of, followed by their grilled steak thingies (can't think of it off the top of my head but I know it when I look at the drive thru menu), and any other item that does not include the uncooked flour tortillas. ;-d Quick, inexpensive and usually quite tasty! And I get to take it home, put on a movie and take my time consuming it. And they have root beer at the fountain!!! I'd say they are my favorite fast food, followed closely by Jack in the Box which has a very varied menu..... ;-) Churches Chicken is good too, but has the WORST fries on the planet! I'm not going to quarrel with what you find tasty, but real Mexican cuisine is varied and imaginative and delicious. It's definitely worth searching out restaurants that offer more than Taco Bell. -aem |

Haven't been there in about 8 years as a result. I don't want to have to check my order at the drive-thru every time. It's not rocket science - I want 6 crispy corn tortilla tacos without lettuce, okay? Invariably I'd get 2 steak fajitas with extra peppers and 4 beef/bean burritos with extra lettuce. When I want tacos I make them at home. Or I do quesadillas. The market down the street sells some nice chorizo and Queso farmer's cheese. Add some spinach with that between two tortillas and you've got a meal! Jill |

Let's see. Where I live, We have McDonalds, Taco Bell/KFC combo, Arby's, Runza's, DQ, and Pizza Hut. Now, let's break this down: McD's - Grew up on them. Like the Big and Tasty burger. The new chicken strips ain't bad either! Taco Bell/KFC - Love TB but the one here is a hit/miss on food quality. The KFC side has a simple re-stocking problem since they seem to run out of chicken at least once a week. "Welcome to Kentucky Fried Chicken. You can order anything you want but we don't have chicken tonight." Arby's - Cheddar Cheese combo please but with the sesame bun. Later, I'll gladly use the restroom since Arby's seems to pass through me really quick. I think it's the -meat- they use. Runza's - Burgers taste almost like what Mom used to make. No complaints here DQ - Crap shoot here. Sometimes good, sometimes something you wouldn't give to the dog. Pizza Hut - Hate it. Shitty food and the local joint has a "don't give a shit" attitude. Now, I'd love to have some other fast food places here, I'm not holding my breath. Any road trips we make, we eat at none of the aforementioned places. Squared. Herberts here in San Marcos is actually famous thru at least 5 counties. It's a little bitty hole in the wall and always has a line around the block for lunch. And nobody cares that they are frequently fined by the health dept. ;-) I've been there and I don't see what all the fuss is about, except maybe that they prices vs. portions are very good. > > > You just have to know > > what to order, and our local one is really good! > > Your local one serves exactly the same prepackaged food as all the > others. If I really want to go out for Mexican, I've heard Mamacita's is good but expensive! I've not been there yet. Usually, the smaller "mom and pop" places are the best where you get really authentic food... I need to check Austin.food for recommendations next time I get serious about "real" mexican food. I really do know better! I just really like the speed and convenience of Taco Bell, and the food is very acceptable, especially in comparison to the vast majority of "fast food" places. :-) > -- K. Best Quesadillas are made in the foreman grill! :-) Quick, and crisps up the tortillas nicely with less butter. Jack cheese with shrimp is one of my fav' home made ones. I'm sorry you have a bad T-Bell! I live in a college town and the T-Bell is right on the edge of the University. I used to love Arby's cheese and beef sammiches, but I've not been to an Arby's now in over 10 years since I went low sodium. To me, taking a bite of Arby's roast beef tastes like I just stuck a spoonful of pure salt in my mouth. It's amazing how you totally lose your taste for any heavily salted foods, and Arby's RB is not "real" meat. <sigh> > > Runza's - Burgers taste almost like what Mom used to make. The Icelanders still kill whales and dolphins... Long John Silvers is toooo expensive for what you get. Red Lobster, Chili's, both WAY too heavy on the salt on most main dishes! Subway. No Wheat, but they are starting to cater to the low carb crowd, so I may give them another shot, but luncheon meats are often too salty. I can still always eat Church's fried chicken. :-) I also still really like the grilled flavor of Burger King burgers. DQ fries are usually reliably good. IHOP is so so, as is Denny's. Ok for a quick coffee stop if you need a road break to wake up. Not places I'd recommend, but ok if you are desparate for a quicky ham and egg brekky. I don't really eat much fast food unless I really am on a long road trip, or just being lazy and don't feel like cooking which is rare. ;-) If we are really short on time, dad will usually grab a hot rotiserie chicken from Wal-mart. > > Bret > > > > ----== Posted via Newsfeeds.Com - Unlimited-Uncensored-Secure Usenet > News==---- > http://www.newsfeeds.com The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! 120,000+ > Newsgroups > ----= East and West-Coast Server Farms - Total Privacy via Encryption =---- -- K. Iceland have done some research whaling of minkie whale, a specie that even Greenpeace admits are in no danger, it is one of the healthiest whale populations in the world. Iceland has never caught dolphins and Icelanders would never catch a whale of a specie that is endangers. (Iceland even made whaling in it=B4s waters illegal between 1915 and the late 1960=B4s because of the whaling there (mostly by British whalers, was being to much for the whale stocks) The US kill dolphins by the thousands and they kill more whales than Iceland does, so do Japan, Russia and Norway. Do you boycott the products of these countries, hypocrite? |

It was a loose meat (beef) sandwich on a steamed hamburger bun. The meat seemed to be the same seasoned ground beef used in the tacos. Shredded cheese was also included. Does anyone remember when Kentucky Fried Chicken sold hamburgers. In 1965-66 in San Jose, California, local KFC's sold hamburgers. They had a thousand island dressing type of sauce in them and they were really good. Rusty Sacramento, CA |

I've honestly never tried frozen spinach... I've never been overly fond of frozen veggies except for frozen niblet corn. ;-d I have SO much chard growing in the garden this year tho' I don't anticipate having to buy much spinach! <lol> I'ts growing very well! Why? :-) A good diet if followed properly (and supplemented with a walking program) SHOULD lose you 10 lbs. per month... I started Jan. 4th so am on schedule at this point... > > Are you absolutely certain? Yes. And yes, I need to lose 123 lbs. I started at 273 and my goal weight is 150. I'm 5' 6" with a heavy bone structure. I plan to start weight lifting again once I get below 200. Muscle is heavy and I tend to gain muscle fairly easily if I keep my protein intake up and practice proper weight training techniques. Last time I lost weight, (12 years ago) I lost 80 lbs. in 6 months, but I starved it off so that is why it came back. I'd fast for 3 to 5 days at a time. The longest I fasted was 2 weeks. I was also weight lifting heavy 3 days per week at the same time. Oddly enough, I never did feel weak. <G> I managed to get my deadlift up to 210 lbs. Never could bench over 90 tho'. :-( The dangers of fasting are over-rated. I did take a lot of vitamin supplements, including amino acids. I do NOT however recommend that to anyone! <lol> This time I've made a LOT of permanent lifestyle and dietary changes. I don't eat the way I used to. Not at all, nor will I ever again. For one thing, I've spent the last 10 years learning nutrition and learning how to cook! <G> And my Dr. has finally helped me get my thyroid levels right with the right Thyrolar dosages, and we are addressing the insulin resistance issue. > > > (Well done on the 30 so far, though!) If you get to a plateau and can't seem to get off, try throwing in 3-6 oz of extra protein every 2-3 days at uneven intervals, for two weeks. After that, you should lose easily again. The problem is that when the diet ends the weight comes back with interest, and the first taste of sugar in a few weeks seats me off on a sugar binge and I lose my conscience. I once managed to lose 30 pounds, but 3-4 pounds per year sneaking back on add up. Bad eating habits at work did not help matters much, so now that I am retired it is time to get serious about losing some weight. Besides, I took up horseback riding and it would be easier for me and for the horses if there was less of me to lug around. I had a membership at the Y, but it was 25 miles away and I did not get down there often enough. This month a new Y facility opened up only 3 miles from my house. I have no excuses now. I go there every day and my exercise regime lasts about 1 1/2 hours. It was disappointing the first week when I gained a few pounds, but now I am losing 2-3 pounds per week. The net loss is not that great yet, but clothing is starting to get loose on me. I feel a lot more energetic and I find the riding lessons less tiring. |

You may want to resume weight training sooner -- cardio doesn't give the same degree of post-workout increase in the metabolism, and lifting should help to keep muscle loss lower than fat loss. I don't have as much to go, nor as ambitious a program, but I'm now trying to shake myself off a plateau. Good luck! |

The max amount anyone should try to loose without a once a week doctor visit is about 115 figuring 2 pounds a week give or take a little. You may want to rethink your bet. Loosing even 100 a year is unsafe and can lead to lots of medical problems that you may not be aware of.
