Default Alfalfa Sprouts?

I keep trying to find new "veggies" my small parrot might like. I just
bought a container of alfafa sprouts and she doesn't seem thrilled with
them. So, any ideas what I can do with the remainder? Maybe add to a stir
fry with water chestnuts, bamboo shoots and broccoli?

NOTE: I don't like cold food, i.e. salads, cold pita-bread sandwiches, etc.

Might just throw them out for the wild birds. They might be more
appreciative than Peaches is.

I'd try them in a soup. As a add at the end garnish type dealie.

They are good on sandwiches. Use like you would lettuce. (yes, I read
your comment about cold food) Maybe you can use them on that hamburger.

I like them on crackers with slices of tomatoe and some mayo...

AFAIK, Alfalfa sprouts are not eaten warm?

My cocaktoo has a passion for fresh corn on the cobs, and halves of
oranges, grapefruit, apples, tangerines, mango, bell peppers, anaheim
peppers, chili petines, kiwi fruit.......

I've offered her various sprouts, she never seemed very interested. For
greens, she likes carrot tops, fresh celery leafy tops, red leaf
lettuce, and I plan to offer her some fresh swiss chard from the garden.

I have never heard of a warm recipe with Alfalfa sprouts either. I think
they'd just wilt away and become a dirty-tasting, stuck-together blob.
Sprouts are usually used in sandwiches and salads; can't think of any other
way, unless, like what Mr. Fromage (that name still cracks me up!)
suggested - garnish.

Wouldn't be chow mein, hot n' sour soup, etc. without cooked sprouts...
alfalfa sprouts are a nice garnish for all types of hot soups. Sprouts
can be of all types of seeds... I like sprouted mustard seed, very good
in tomato-y soups, adds a nice bite.

Peaches (lovebird) likes fresh kale, cabbage, apples, spinach, celery tops.
She didn't care for corn and I haven't tried citrus fruit yet.

I offer citrus regularly because birds need vitamin C and don't make it
themselves like predatory mammals do. :-)

I think Tangerines seem to be Freya's favorite.

I'll have to try Kale! I have 3 beautiful purple kale plants and have
found them to be inedible for us humans, so I let them live in pots just
because they are pretty.

I'll offer her some, thanks!

And I'll try tangerines, thank you! I discovered the squirrels outside like
alfalfa sprouts Peaches eats a fortified pellet diet including vitamin C
but fresh from the source is always best. Do you remove the seeds first?

She gets vitamin A from greens like kale and spinach. She's also very picky
about her apples - only Gala or Golden delicious slices for her, thank you
very much I've been told she might like banana, too, but I can't figure
out how to fit a piece of banana in the thing that holds her fresh greens
and pieces of fruit without mashing the banana all to pieces. LOL

Anyway, eat the sprouts. They're good for you.

I like bean sprouts, which I think are good in certain dishes (pad thai,
some stir-fries and soup, sizzling Saigon crepe). And I've tasted other
kinds of sprouts that I like better than alfalfa sprouts (there used to be a
sprouts lady at our local farmer's market...I think she had broccoli
sprouts? something like that).

But alfalfa sprouts? Yeccch. Can't stand 'em. For a while (late 80's,
early 90's?), you couldn't buy a turkey or veggie sandwich without a tangled
mess of alfalfa sprouts on it. Annoying. I say, feed 'em to the squirrels,
Jill.

The squirrels love 'em I'm glad they were cheap. Didn't see any fresh
mung bean sprouts, which was what I was actually looking for.

Make compost out of them. :-) I hate the buggers.
When I lived in So. Calif. I ate at a sort of "hippy-dippy"
place once up near Ojai. It was lunch and I ordered
a cheeseburger, but their stuff had all kinds of organic
things so the burger came with alfalfa sprouts. I figured
what the heck and ate it but it was like eating grass.
Yuck! I am not a horse. (A pig maybe, but not a horse. ;-))

Anyway, your bird has good taste. ;-)

Let me know how she likes them?
There are mixed stories about whether or not citrus seeds are toxic but
no, I've never removed the seeds and Freya usually goes after those
first! <G>

Same for whole peppers. She strips out all the seeds first. She'll eat a
hole in a whole bell pepper and eat all the seeds out.

>

<giggles> I don't blame her... Gala are my favorite also!
Freya will eat some apple, but it's not her favorite fruit. Neither are
grapes.

I made my own fruit feeder board. It's just a piece of 2x6 (untreated)
with two blunted nails driven up thru the bottom. That sits on top of
her old cage (which is in her aviary) and I still stuff on top of it.

For some extra oranges and stuff, I'll punch a hole in the rind and
stick a pipe cleaner thru it and twist one end to hold the fruit and the
other end of the wire I twist onto the cage wire. I do the same for
cuttle bones.

Never offered her bannana!

You probably already know that avocados are toxic right?

Freya finally destroyed one window molding too many so we built her a
large aviary out on the sun porch. I'ts 4'wide, 8'long and 6' high. It's
walk in and the floor is covered with shavings. I can walk in there and
have cuddle sessions with her. :-)

The sun porch is insulated and has a window AC and a floor heater in the
winter.

Oops!

Does she like citrus at all?
Some birds probably don't.

Or other peppers. :-)
I have a "wild" petin bush with itty bitty peppers every year and she
loves those also.

That's too funny!
Freya will eat some apples, but it's not her favorite fruit.

I offered her a kale leaf today and she seemed quite interested!

I do give her millet sprays, and I get her parakeet "honey sticks" too!
She loves the bird treats.
