Moving from one place to another during my long life I
have lost many good recipes. The software "Now You're Cooking" was
recommended to me. I'm wondering how many good cooks use recipe software.
Which software seems the most practical to use? Is there a software into
which one can download recipes to save the bother of typing each recipe into
the system? I'm sure I would eat much better if I had a handy list of good
recipes from which to make my day --- or week. Suggestions on organizing and
keeping track of recipes will be

while referring to music.... how would you feel if while getting ready for
departure you saw the pilot board arms loaded with a stack of flight manuals.
If everytime you prepare a dish you need to pull out a recipe then you're not
any kind of cook... you're less than a burger flipper... even they don't need a
recipe.

Mastercook and MealMaster are the "de facto" standard in exchanging recipes.
I use Mastercook (version 7.0, it is alive and kicking!) and have got easily
over 25,000 in it. I find it easy to go to any web site and do a cut and
paste into Mastercook. You do have to edit a couple of things but 95% of the
work is done for you.

Check out this site:
http://www.madsrecipes.com/ and see what all you can just import.

If you go with NYC just make sure that it works on mastercook or mealmaster
format files. Then google and find the recipe sites for importing.

Um, you're making a fallacious assumption, not everybody gets "good"... in fact
the vast majority never get any better at cooking than someone with a tin ear
gets at playing the piano, no matter how many lessons they are made to take.
Being a good cook *requires/mandates* innate talent. Following recipes is the
first clue that one is a lousy cook and will always be so.

Out of interested, I downloaded a trial copy of living cookbook from a
site someone recommended. I wasn't impressed. Could not get Mastercook
since I live outside the States - not that I would have bought it anyway.
They don't offer a trial copy.

That's true, I can, but cooking talent is not all that rare, which is why cooks
aren't paid like rock stars, but one still needs to possess that talent, and
the only way is to be born with the ability... one can learn *about* cooking
from a book but it's not possible to become a good cook [doing] from any book,
or from any source. Someone possesing innate cooking ability needs to be shown
but once... then by sensory perception and practice hones their skills.

Cooking ability is like sexual ability... I'm positive some of yoose out there
have/had partners for many years that weren't any good to begin with and no
matter how much practice they never got better... and then the right one comes
along and very first occasion knows to play you like the maestro does an
orchestra.

I am a BIG fan of Mastercook. I have heard "Now you're cooking" recommended
and might try it one of these days, but MC has been the most useful thing on
my computer...well ONE of the most useful!

He has been little but a personality for about 20 years now. Pity.
So I wouldn't care whether he was following the music or not...that said:
how do you think he learned the parts in the first place? He doesn't make
"La Traviata" up as he goes along. And what do you think the orchestra is
doing? They don't memorize EVERYTHING.
Anyway, a recipe is sometimes something to follow to the letter and
sometimes just a starting point.
You really can't compare, unless you are citing a musician who is
improvising variations of themes, or playing jazz. In Jazz, once the
principles of music are grasped, one can improvise freely...but jazz
musicians usually have a HUGE grasp of keys, chord progressions etc.
Otherwise, it's just noise.
Yeah, I'm a little bored today...waiting for deliveries, repairs etc (new

Do try the NYC program - I used MasterCook for years and switched to
NYC. Its import feature is a snap. Doesn't have all the whistles and
bells of MC, but I find that a plus, frankly.

I find the only bells and whistle NYC lacks from MC are MC allows differing
printing formats. in NYC you get limited printing styles, but in MC you can
move things about and change every format or field. MC would be good for
printing up say a church recipe book or a collection of family recipes. But
for all purpose recipe storeage NYC is better. MC has no tech support, NYC
tech support is very fast to reply and will consider ideas on how to
improve the program. MC if there is a new version...you need to buy the new
version. NYC if there is a new version if you bought the correct initial
package all updates are free. I find NYC search engine faster and it's
import features easier than MC. Both MC and NYC have the nutrition info and
the shopping list not sure if MC has the supermarket Aisle layout or coupon
saver features of NYC...Plus NYC has that convert a cookbook with an index
to HTML which is nice if you want to send a cookbook via CD to somebody

Not true, Sheldon. The popularity of at least one local restaurant
(Kincaid's, I believe) was due in part to the head chef's insistence
that the recipes be followed. Happy patrons were thus assured of the
same high quality at each visit.

I've often thought that the downside of my cooking is that I rarely
measure things in most cooking and it's difficult to reproduce a winner
exactly.
