Am I mistaken or doesn't toffee have butter in it? Seems to me this is a recipe for simple syrup except for the vinegar and food coloring, which I don't believe belong in a recipe for toffee no how. No telling which one the OP is trying to accomplish. Jill |

I use baking soda when I'm making toffee brittle or peanut brittle and definitely a couple of Tablespoonfuls of butter. And the mixture has to be at the hard-crack stage. OP doesn't say if she's trying to make something "sal****er" taffy-like or a brittle toffee. Jill |

Butter would be out of place then. Could be the mix isn't being cooked long enough. |
