Default Please help me.

I have been trying to make a very simple recipe of toffee for the kids and
have only attempted twice, and both those times they turned out liquidy.

Can anyone please tell me what I am doing wrong here?

3 cups sugar
1 cup water
vinegar
food colouring

Thank-you

Ms Misc

IMHO Toffee is more in the technique.
How are you making it?

Wait til it get to the right colour (ie dark brown) before adding food
colouring.

You may need to increase the temperature. A sugar thermometer helps.

Am I mistaken or doesn't toffee have butter in it? Seems to me this
is a recipe for simple syrup except for the vinegar and food coloring,
which I don't believe belong in a recipe for toffee no how.

And there are different types of toffee - soft and hard. No telling which
one the OP is trying to accomplish.

As Far As I know you're right about the toffee....maybe she means crack
candy if she gets the temperature and time right.

That might be her problem... ;-)
My mom also used baking soda to get it to bubble, not vinegar.

I use baking soda when I'm making toffee brittle or peanut brittle and
definitely a couple of Tablespoonfuls of butter. And the mixture has to be
at the hard-crack stage. OP doesn't say if she's trying to make something
"sal****er" taffy-like or a brittle toffee.

Are you using a candy thermometer, or...?

serene, whose toffee has to be at 290F to come out right

Sounds more like the toffee for toffee apples, aka 'candy apples' in the
US. Butter would be out of place then.

Could be the mix isn't being cooked long enough.
