Default Speaking of Coney Island HOT Doggies

Okay..... You folks have convince me that this is the place
to ask questions about anything cooking related.

So tonight I want to ask about Coney Island Hot Dogs.

When I was a kid.... many years ago, there used to be a little
lunch counter that had this delicious Coney Island sauce.

It wasn't hot and spicy, it was kinda beefy and mellow.

It was mighty tasty.

In those days a hot dog was fifteen cents or two for a quarter,
and a burger was a quarter.

I'd sure like to find a recipie that even comes close.

Anyone want to take a stab at this....???????

Our Coney Island here uses a sauce that is much like a sweetened
beanless chili. Sometimes it is almost sloppy joe like sauce.

Don't know if it's the same, but Sam's sells a prepared Coney Island
Sauce.

Or, you could check it out on Google:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...oogle+Sear ch

and come up with about 28,800 hits in 0.21 seconds, one of which would
be:
http://www.cooks.com/rec/search/0,1-..._sauce,FF.html
(it was the first hit)
with several pages of recipes for Coney Island sauce. You'll have to
decide which sounds most like what you remember.

Good Luck!

Oh, there are so many! Do a Google search for "coney island sauce" and
you'll find enough to keep you experimenting for a long time. In the
meantime, here's one...

Coney Island Hot Dog Sauce

1 TB butter
1 TB margarine
1-1/2 lb LEAN ground beef
2 md onions minced
1 clove garlic minced
3 TB chile powder
1 TB prepared mustard
1 (6oz) can tomato paste
1 (6oz) can water
4 / 5 cheap skinless hot dogs
salt and pepper to taste

Do NOT brown beef before using!!
Combine all except hot dogs and simmer until thick.
Grind the hot dogs [or chop in food processor] stir in
and cook 15 min longer.
Store in frig or freeze some.
Use over GOOD casing type hot dogs with chopped
onions and mustard. The big secret in this recipe is the
ground cheap hot dogs. This is the orignal Flint [MI]
Coney Island sauce.

Yes I've got cooks.com bookmarked and refer to it on a regular basis.

I guess it's time to buy some chili powder and a few other tasty
ingredients and give it a try.

As always..... Thanks to everyone for their hints and suggestions.
