Double wides, mobile homes, they're all trailers. Nowadays the latest high tech rage are "manufactured homes", not nearly a stick built home but leagues ahead of any mobile/trailer thingie. And the new partical/composite board is as unaffected by water as marine grade plywood... only real drawback is that partical/composite has minimal nail holding ability... nail up siding and before long it just falls off. Still can't beat stick built. So, how do you live with all those chickens, emus, and assorted livestock on a 1/4 acre... on 1/4 acre lots yoose all can reach out your kitchen windows and shake hands just about... your neighbors must bitch about the stink, or maybe they're pig famers. Plenty of garden and greenhouse space between the back of the house and the pens. Besides, I don't have THAT many birds!!! And I keep them clean so the smell is only a problem when we get a lot of rain, but several tons of sand shoveled into the pens over time keeps that to a minimum. Proper drainage is the key! -- K. ',;~}~ <shrugs> Dunno... Are there _any_ reasonably priced land plots in that area? Property around here is going up! Even undeveloped land is now up to around $5,000 per acre. Developed house lots by the lake are $10,000 per 1/4 acre. If I could afford a large lot of land, I could get it as low as $3,000 per, but I'd have to buy 150 acres. I don't WANT that much land! I suppose I could break it up for resale, but...... I could not afford the initial purchase, much less the property tax. <lol> > > > > > There was some local flooding and one seller lot lost a whole bunch of > > > > them to the stoopid flooring. > > > > > > No insurance then?!? > > > > Oh I'm sure they were! > > But it's not common to purchase flood insurance around here unless you > > are close to the river! However, even a house the size of ours but with a *half* decent garden, on the other side of the river will go for anywhere between £200K and £250K. That last force 5 tornado that hit central Texas a few years back went several miles, killed several people and damn near dug a trench in the ground several hundred feet across. :-( It even leveled brick buildings. Nothing was left in it's path..... > > > We get them around here but fortunately, non closer than about 5 miles > > away. It did not hurt my truck, but it did put a few dents in the aluminum camper shell. We don't get TOO much hail here, but several years ago we did get the golf ball size. Did a few grand worth of damage to the cars, (thank heavens they were insured!), took out a couple of windows on one side of the house and we had to replace our roof. Home owners insurance had a $400.00 deductible. I called a glazier right away and he was already backed up for two days. ;-) He asked me if I could wait as they had to give priority to the larger windows of businesses down town and I told him I'd be ok, I just wanted to get on his list asap. <lol> We just taped in cardboard for the two days it took him to get out there. It was a boon for local repair businesses! One freind of mine in Austin got BASEBALL sized hail a few weeks ago! Broke roof tiles and did massive damage. She had a car port luckily. I heard it killed hundreds of birds in Austin too! It is scary stuff. > > > > > > > Mobil homes also depreciate where a house does not, and since many > are > > > > > > cheaply built, they don't hold up well. > > > > > > > > > > We do get them here too... > > > > > > > > Ever looked at them for moving out to the country? > > > > > > Nah, why? - We are in the country! Geez. :-( My house here is valued at about that now. I originally bid and paid only 35K, but that's the advantage of looking for repo's. That was also 18 years ago. I got lucky. Properties in San Antonio and Austin are priced at what you mentioned. One has to look in the suburbs or outlying areas for the affordable stuff. The house next door to me is for sale right now and has a nice lot, slightly larger than mine. I think it's going for about 80K. > > > Bummer. > > > > Coulda been worse. ;-) > > We only got about 4" thru the house and it receded fairly quickly. Been meaning to say - that last cactus cutting, the vertical one - it's > not taken yet - no roots, no shoots, but it's remaining green and firm, so > there's a chance yet. Give it awhile. Mine went dormant all winter nearly thru early spring. They are just now really starting to show some progress. I harvested 25 buds for new plants about 7 weeks ago now, and they are still just sitting there, but they ARE showing some root growth. No losses either. :-) Cactus are SO much easier to propagate than perrenials! The stumps I cut them off of are only just now starting to bud! Last time I cut, it only took 3 weeks to bud but that was late summer. I'm hoping to get at least 2 crops this year. I sank over $300.00 into these cactus (two of the big ones are still uncut tho' as they are major eye candy) and have not been able to re-sell yet to make it back, but I knew this was going to be a long term project. I want to let the new babies get some size on them so they will be worth more, and the largest one will be kept for further propagation. I went out last night and at least half of the stumps are starting, one has 2 buds. I counted 13 new buds total last night anywhere from just a smidgin a few mm across to over a cm. and not all of the stumps are budding yet! Probably regulated by temp. and daylight hours. If it has not rotted, you are doing fine! :-) Do be sure to water it weekly as long as it dries out a bit between waterings. That should stimulate some root growth, but TOO much wet will rot it. > > The other news is the PT babies - I have about 3 *new* ones that have just > sprouted over this past couple weeks or so, after all this time! Cool or > what huh? ',;~}~ Oh my! ;-) I think I told you the ones I tweezed out and potted were not doing well? I put a 2 liter soda bottle bottom terrarium back over the pot finally and they are now rapidly catching up to the ones I left alone in the terrarium. I think only 2 or 3 died. Seems that seedling cacti will do better if kept in a moister environment for the first 2 years. These were one year old in March. It's time for new pics! The biggest ones in the terrarium are still only about 2 cm. tall, but they are fattening out a bit and getting nicely crowded. I might have to plan to thin them. They went brownish color over the winter so I thought they had rotted, but they stayed firm so I left them be. Now they are greening up with the spring. :-) Scared me tho'! I have a 15 gallon aquarium that I'm not using for anything, so I may try transplanting some into there to alleviate the crowding somewhat and see what happens. I can cover it with a sheet of plastic or glass. Either that or I'll start a batch of new seeds! I've still got several thousand seeds. <lol> Since the 2 liter coke bottle bottom terrarium thing worked SO well, I might just save a few more of those and try doing pots and mini-terrariums that way. Just maybe 5 or 6 with a few hundred seeds and see how well that works. The two large PT's that I bought from the greenhouse are doing well, and I should probably go ahead and remove the buds from the one big cut one, then trim it to encourage more budding like I did with the SP's. I need a new pair of welders gloves first. The thorns on those are VICIOUS!!! I really ought to send you a PT bud when I do remove those. :-) When I do make up a package, I have one package left of vieled lady dried mushrooms. Does Kath want them since niether you or I can eat those? How is your supply of dried Shitakes? I finally re-hydrated some shitakes the other night in just water, then removed the stems, sliced them fine and sauteed' them with celery and onions to make a wonderful Frittata. It was fabulous so looks like I'm getting the hang of using the dried ones! They are a FRACTION of the cost of fresh so all is good! > > > Hey - they can hear us from up the street apparently... heheheh... > > > > <lol> > > Bragging or complaining? ;-D > > Heheheh, I ain't sayin' ',;~}~ > > I just know Simon was walking home early hours one day - next day he > cheekily asked Kath when she'd decided to take up religion - she positively > melted on the spot with embarassment LOL! Open paved run down the centre from front doors to back - we'll be planting straight in the dirst down each side, maybe putting up some benches/shelves at a later date, when we need them. So far, it's looking like we're gonna have the thing nearly filled with tomatoes - Kath planted heaps, then we were given 2 more trays full as well - we've got shit loads LOL! Thinking we should plant garlic, then make and sell some sauces from our stuff - we already have basil and other herbs, and some onion sets in - figure we can grow lots of maters, use what we can, sell some loose to passers by, make some tomato products to sell too (alreayd been selling h/made Seville orange m'lade from the 'lotty to passers by - it's the done thing when working on the place - kinda neat! I've risked planting some more chile seeds, late since the numbers were looking poor so far - planted Bolivian Rainbow seeds, and have some from a big, juicy, long red pod Zimbabwean grown s/market chiles, quite hot and tasty - dried out and soaking now too - determined to do my best to get a reasonable harvest this year... > > We've just got to finish off now, drop the sides to tension the sheeting, > > put membrane under the outside skirt, dig the plots over etc. We have a > > central path laid and all else is done now! > > > > I have some pictures I here I took last night just to show you - if I get > > chance to DL and crop them for E-mail, I will send them to you ',;~}~ > > If you get a chance! Instead of pulling the bigger ones out and risking disturbing the newbies, I've taken to giving them a regular cactus and succulant feed, and they've shot up - they were going nowhere for so long, then in the 2 or so weeks I've been feeding them, most have about doubled in mass - thickened up nicely, mostly, but gained in high too - I think they've been desperate for growing fuel, stuck in those little tiny seedling tray cells! > I think I told you the ones I tweezed out and potted were not doing > well? Yes - I've been keeping these wet almost - I fll the outer tray 1/3rd of the way up with feed and water, then top up as soon as that is dry, but while the soil is still damp, and they seem to be responding well. I really do need them out of that tray soon as possible though, and Kath has just bought me a little tiny windowsil frame greenhouse (from Ikea, called simply 'Fro', heheheheh!) that looks like they'd do great in! > It's time for new pics! They take so long to get to a good size from seedlings, might as well start early as poss eh? We're looking to get one or two large heated propagators ready for next year (or a temp contollable heated mat or two that we can lay standard propagator trays of various sizes on) - we only have a small one now - that should help us with our seedlings, esp. chiles and such that need good temps at first to sprout well, also can be used in winter with lid one, but vents open, to keep things like small cactus from getting to cold. > Since the 2 liter coke bottle bottom terrarium thing worked SO well, I > might just save a few more of those and try doing pots and > mini-terrariums that way. This is similar to what I did with my magic beans when they were suffering a little outdoors - I put a big mayo jar over each as a cloche and they shot up. When the jars were too small, propped a clear plastic mixing bowl over them all, now I have a 4 foot high one around the whole pot, made from wire mesh with special thermal polytunnel lastic wrapped all around - perfect! > The two large PT's that I bought from the greenhouse are doing well, and > I should probably go ahead and remove the buds from the one big cut one, > then trim it to encourage more budding like I did with the SP's. > > I need a new pair of welders gloves first. Me, well, I was just... proud... > > typical male reaction, heheheh... > > <snicker> You are SUCH a male! ;-D But I have an open, unashamedly feminine side! I was given honorary sisterhood by my friend Sally and her bunch yaknow - they said I was great to have along when clothes shopping as my style advice was fantastic and I didn't moan, and Sally told me I'm her favourite bitching partner in the world LOL! Also I have no fear of showing my emotions, no fear of commitment (as you know!), am the first to ask directions when a bit lost, or to ask for which isle an item is on in the s/market rather than stubbornly and proudly continuing on for an age in hopes I can sort it myself. I have been told, that these are generally, fully feminine traits. Unfortunately however, I do not have a glorious pair of tits on my chest, with which to play at my leasure - can't have it all (at once?!?) I suppose... heheheheh... Shaun aRe -- I have that exquisite feeling, the feeling that I was born a thousand years ago, and yet have experienced every *minute* moment of that thousand years, as if through the senses of an enchanted child. This is the source of my love of life, my enjoyment of others, the very seed of my happiness. |

Then you end up on life's greatest adventure... Ever wonder what it was like to die? Mom told me a week before she died that, when she was feeling just so very tired, that she saw her spirit guides come to her. They said that all she had to do was take their hands and she could go. She told them no at that point, but she said she thought I'd at least want to know. A couple of days later, before she ended up on the ventilator for 5 days, I know she knew she was dying and she said "I'm so scared!". I can still hear that after three years. Talk about feeling so helpless..... <tears> The doctor said her heart suddenly stopped with no warning. I'm thinking she finally just decided to let go. > > Like standing on top of a metal water tank, on the highest hill within a 4 > mile radius, in the middle of a raging thunderstorm, watching the lightning > hitting every other hill around us, with a large... mushroom meal inside > me...?!?!? Not yet. All I have are the newborn pix and she took them at 4 mp's so they are about 2.5 megs each. I need to reduce them, but I want more pics first. I really need to buy a bunch of webspace from another outfit. Century still wants $1.00 per month per MEG! That's assinine by today's standards and they won't budge. I have one site bookmarked that offers gig's for a much better price. <lol> I just need to get off my tail and pay for it, then set up a new gallery. <snipped> > > Amusing no? > > Yup! They have amazed ME! :-) 100% success, no losses, not even that bud that was attacked by some sort of cactus worm. It spun a "web" in one crevice then proceeded to eat a big gash in it. I smashed the worm, then treated the open wound with lots of anti-fungal powder. The experience that I've had with cacti is that bug munches are not so much of a problem, but the violation of the outer skin can allow fungal infection and that literally liquifies the plant from the inside out! If it starts to happen, only drastic and quick "surgery" can save a cactus... I lost my Bishop's cap cactus that way so that is how I learned. If I'd cut the infected area quickly enough, I might have been able to at least save the root system which would have then thrown more offsets. I know better now. ;-) > > > The stumps I cut them off of are only just now starting to bud! Last > > time I cut, it only took 3 weeks to bud but that was late summer. I've recently noted a few more as well! I'm not using that 15 gallon tank I have right now. I'm thinking of turning it into a terrarium and putting plastic sheeting on the screen lid, then planting a BUNCH of more PT seeds. I'll just have to clean up greenhouse #2 and make a good sunny spot for it. > > Instead of pulling the bigger ones out and risking disturbing the newbies, > I've taken to giving them a regular cactus and succulant feed, and they've > shot up - they were going nowhere for so long, then in the 2 or so weeks > I've been feeding them, most have about doubled in mass - thickened up > nicely, mostly, but gained in high too - I think they've been desperate for > growing fuel, stuck in those little tiny seedling tray cells! <grins> I might have to seriously consider thinning a bit. Say, I was thinking... I have a thornless prickly pear that is finally starting to do a bit better. When it gets enough pads, would you like to try growing it? They can get rather large but the thornless ones are easier to handle and young pads make good pickles. > > Do you think from your exp, I am best to cut that bud off the log cutting > now, and plant it up seperately, then trim the log again for another go? I'm thinking about trying to set my logs upright, then cut the bud, trim the stump and see what happens. If the bud is at least 6 cm. or more, it should do well on it's own... I've not played much with my two horizontal logs so experimentation is in order! As long as any trimmed/cut surfaces are not in contact with soil...... Seems that trimming where you cut a bud stimulates re-budding a bit better than just leaving it. > > > When I do make up a package, I have one package left of vieled lady > > dried mushrooms.
