Actually, Wavy, if you knew those involved, you would know they really
ARE just trying to be helpful. But now that the point's been made,
they won't hammer you about it or anything. No one here is mean -
we're just all a little "entertaining" and, thankfully, all completely
different, yet somehow manage to carry on a sort of "town" that, if it
existed in real life, you would find me packing up and moving to (and
yes, that grammar just sucked).

If you want incredible, a friend of mine gave me a link to an MRE
cookbook when he got back from Afghanistan. However, it's not nearly
as creative as what they came up with in the field. <looking like mad
for the link>

If there's a restaurant devoted to a variety of cooking, of course there
will be cookbooks associated with it.

But... wavyg... weren't you the guy just insulting anime? intentionally?

Try watching Kodomo no Omocha, they've got some wonderful recipes for
ramen in that show :-)

Lena

it's a good show too, about children, but very very deep.

Hmm, no don't recall ever insulting anime--intentionally or otherwise.

I do that as well, and sometimes I put the flavor packet in the water, cook
the noodles, then pan-fry them in oil to turn them into a form of Lo Mein.

I saw you on RAAM (crossposted intentionally). Anyway, some _real_ ramen
recipes generally use real ramen, not the maruchan equivalent.

Wavy, you just keep right on doing it, over and over.
These are not "typos". They are regular consistent mis-spellings. I
know you must be a youngster, but you can learn.
It is "dumb", not "dumn".
"Anyone", not "Anywon".
And it is "recipe", not "recipie".
Try it, son, you'll like it.

I have wondered about that, Lena. While I like Ramen-style noodles
for various uses (good for disaster food storage, BTW) I don't think I
have ever actually seen "Ramen" as a brand name. I think almost
everything I've seen is the Maruchan brand. I do remember, however,
that as a last-minute addition to storage before y2k, I bought a bunch
of these at 10 cents apiece and just a few days ago, which would be
over 4 years (good grief, how time flies) I tried one and it tasted
like new. I thought they tended to go rancid over time.

That's because "ramen" is NOT a brand name. :P It's a type of noodle, and
also refers to any of a number of soups in which that particular type of
noodle is used.

> I think almost everything I've seen is the Maruchan brand.

Maruchan is the primary brand of instant ramen in North America. Other brand
are Nissin and Smack, but Maruchan is pretty much the top name in the ramen
industry outside of Japan.

The lifespan of packaged ramen is about five years, give or take. It's
loaded with MSG. (REALLY wouldn't recommend eating ramen over 28 months old,
though, by the way. Not really healthy.)

Now, there IS a difference between freeze-dried packaged ramen and fresh
ramen, which is the type of ramen you'd find at a ramen stand or in a
Chinese cafe. That ramen is pressed and cooked fresh, and the quality
difference is noteable...rather like telling the difference between the
pasta you cook at home, and the pasta served in an Italian restaurant.

More like the difference between urine-soaked cardboard and the
richest, densest triple-chocolate New York-style cheesecake
(substitute favourite food of choice here). Even the crap they serve
in the train stations is light-years beyond evilcrappynastyick instant
crap.

I used to work near a real ramen restaurant, and ate there at least
once a week, more if I could spare the time. Sadly, they went out of
business after a few months, and were replaced by a nasty barbecue
joint.

So, Ramen even refers to the fresh noodle made in authentic Chinese
joints? I have seen the noodle-making technique on TV before and was
fascinated. I have always wanted to try a genuine "noodle bowl" with
stock. I think I got this urge after watching the movie Tampopo.
BTW, for foodies I highly recommend that one plus the ultimate food
movie of all time, "Eat, Drink, Man, Woman". Both are worth the
trouble to hunt them down. Of course, I'm an Indie freak, so maybe no
one else likes them, especially the ones with subtitles. I'm a
serious fan of the "Masseur Ichi" 1960's samurai movies with English
subtitles. And for those of you who off-handedly blow them off - give
it a chance - these movies are so far beyond the typical crap of today
("wait- i need to get into the NSA database - ok, I'm in" - giant
cartoonish computer screens animating in the background with blipping
noises - God, give me a break) that you can't believe it.

Yes, because that's what those noodles are *called*. It's NOT a brand name,
any more than "lasagna" or "spaghetti" are brand names.

Well, do you feel better now? That's twice you've tried to make me
appear stupid in front of my new friends. Thanks, "Nancree." You've
ruined my life. I guess I'll be disconnecting my cable modem, and
cancelling my Internet account now.

What on earth gave you the impression that you actually had "friends" here
on rfc? It takes a lot more than your pitiful offerings and criticisms to
earn the friendship of the good folks of rfc. Yeah, you might as well
disconnect your cable modem and cancel your Internet account.

1) I have *lots* of bandwidth.

2) I was bored.

3) I like trying to post in different styles and to be able to converse
with anybody -- including half-wits who like to ask inane questions.
Sometimes it's fun to try to get the inane question thread to quickly
topic-drift into something interesting (that was not the case this time,
but it was about a week ago.)

4) I thought it would **** people off just a little -- especially with
that cascade thing we had going with no trimming so that the S/N ratio
approached zero. Sort of a canonical bad example. ;-) I figure anyone
who was *really* ****ed about it killed the thread a long time ago.

Thanks for asking,
Bob

LOL. Understood. It didn't particularly **** me off. Your level of
involvement in it just seem somehow out of character for you. What did
**** me off was his insulting reponses to others in other threads.

Eastbound and down, loaded up and truckin', we're gonna do what they say
can't be done. We got a long way to go, and a short time to get there.
I'm eastbound, just watch ol' "Wayne Boatwright" run.

Well, that wasn't really the reaction I was expecting. Maybe I should
try a different approach?

Bob,

Don't worry about him. I think he's just jealous that you guessed right
and he didn't.

Well sweetie, while I'm always willing to be helpful and freindly, (and
I normally ignore spelling flames), once "won" is corrected, I think
it's a bit annoying for "won" to continue to deliberately mis-spell the
obvious "wones".

While I teased a bit with my "Calimari/Calamari" thread, I have every
intention of spelling Calamari correctly from now on.

I, for one, hate to look ingnorant.

Please take this as CONSTRUCTIVE criticism???
I mean well by it. ;-)

Cheers!

Uh, excuse me - I was an IT consultant to a fairly large company
leading up to that event. I don't say non-event, because the only
reason it turned out as it did was that millions of people like me
gave up their personal lives for a couple of years to fix it. It
didn't get completely fixed there and the result was that over a
period of time thereafter, about 2/3 of the employees were layed off
in a downsizing which was the only way to save the company. I'm not
talking a dozen people, I'm talking hundreds. So save your "media
hype" bullshit for someone who wasn't in the trenches. Hype? Tell
that to those people's families.
