Seriously... I just LOVE ramen noodles!

Rather than cooking them in the water, I follow the instructions but add
the soup packet before cooking them so the noodles absorb more flavor.

Once they are done, I top them with some minced chives, a few pieces of
some type of meat (shredded chicken, thin fried pork strips, or several
small cocktail shrimp) and quarter a hard boiled egg and garnish with
that.

Simple, and YUMMY!

A few fresh bean sprouts also go well with it.

Yeah, but don't you have to drain the water? Wonce you do this, you
drain away most of the flavour, no?

No! Use less water! It makes a nice soup that the noodles rest in. It's
been a long time since I've made ramen but if I remember correctly, I
used only 2 cups of water.

Ha! Funny you should ask. This is one of my most commonly done and
favorite things to eat.

First, I simply chuck the the flavoring packets, as they have some
whey in them, and my kid is allergic to dairy. I have some "Beef
Base" and "Chicken Base" that comes in these tubs from Costco that I
use for flavoring.

Take like 4-6 oz frozen steak. Let thaw a little for easier slicing,
and slice thinly. Marinate in a little soy sauce and some of that red
Chili Garlic Sauce until the meat is thawed completely. (Yes, this is
in the danger zone, I'm sure). Set aside.

Slice Carrots, Celery, Green Onions, Mushrooms. Also, very thinly,
slice some Onions and Green Cabbage. Set aside.

Put 6 cups of water in a pot. Add 2 Tbls of Beef Base (or chicken
base, if you desire), or whatever ratio is needed to make "broth".
Add the carrots. Bring to boil over high heat.

Add Ramen Noodles and cook for time on package (usually 3 minutes).
Halfway through cooking, add celery, cabbage, and onions. After
noodles are tender, add mushrooms.

Then remove from heat, add green onions, and dump the sliced steak
(with the marinade) in. Stir. The already hot water cooks the thinly
sliced steak.

I usually add a little more soy sauce and the red chili garlic paste
stuff to my bowl to make it spicier. It is a total sodium fest, but
really good, I think.

And for whatever reason (too much information?) I inevitably have to
hit the bathroom about half an hour after eating. Maybe it's the beef
base. I dunno.

Have fun!

Use them as a base for making Lo Mein:

Break up a package of ramen noodles, any flavor but beef, in a small
saucepan, add 1 cup hot tap water (the package directions will call for
2 cups), and the flavor packet. Bring to a boil, remove from heat,
cover. Meanwhile, saute a sliced half an onion, some diced raw chicken
(or leave out the chicken and add whatever leftover meat you have later
with the noodles), and a handful of frozen french-cut green beans in a
wok (or wok-like skillet) in a little oil over high heat. Add a
spoonful of garlic/chile/oil paste, and a cut-up bell pepper or some
fresh bean sprouts. When the chicken is done, dump in the undrained
ramen noodles. Cook about a minute. Add a little oyster sauce, and
optionally a pinch of brown sugar and/or a few drops of sesame oil if
you got it. Toss, and serve.

Pork ramen goes best with chicken. Chicken ramen goes good with shrimp.
Vegetable ramen goes OK with anything. Beef ramen would probably be
good with lots of mushrooms.

Best regards,
Bob

Do you mean recipes that call for packaged ramen type noodles?

I do that as well, and sometimes I put the flavor packet in the water, cook
the noodles, then pan-fry them in oil to turn them into a form of Lo Mein.

Wavy, forgive me, but if you're old enough to be on the computer,
you're old enough to spell a little better. It's "Anyone", not
"anywon".
And it's "Once", not "wonce".
Some people consider these spelling corrections tiresome. Others, like
me, find consistent mistakes to be tiresome.
Best wishes,
Nancree

Well, thanks a lot, "Nancree" (?). If your goal was to embarrass me,
and make me feel foolish in front of the entire group, well, you've
succeeded. I guess I should leave forever now, lest I make another
stupid mistake for which you can make fun of me.

Just ignore it Wavy. ;-) I do!

Spelling flames are pretty lame and everyone knows it.
I make typos all the time (and some mis-spells) and they are, for the
most part, ignored.

There is NO reason to be embarassed!

Take care!

compounding it by using incorrect english. Off my soapbox and back in

All she did was offer you some elementary spelling corrections, and
quite politely, too. No need to feel offended or embarrassed. English
is a tough language to spell, but it's worth some effort. -aem

For decades, some very wise and prominent English speaking men and
women have proposed a more phonetic spelling of this difficult
language. Sooner or later this will happen, at least to some extent.

Remember the old puzzle, speaking English, how do you pronounce GHOTI?

Fish.
Fishy, fishy, in the brook
Daddy catch him by the hook
Mommy cook him in the pan
Baby eat him like a man.

I'm partial to this poem:

Reading

I take it you already know
Of tough and bough and cough and dough?
Others may stumble, but not you
On hiccough, thorough, slough, through?
Well done! And now you wish, perhaps,
To learn of less familiar traps?

Beware of heard, a dreadful word
That looks like beard and sounds like bird.
And dead; it's said like bed, not bead;
For goodness sake, don't call it deed!
Watch out for meat and great and threat,
(They rhyme with suite and straight and debt).
A moth is not a moth in mother.
Nor both in bother, broth in brother.

And here is not a match for there,
And dear and fear for bear and pear,
And then there's dose and rose and lose--
Just look them up--and goose and choose,
And cork and work and card and ward,
And font and front and word and sword.
And do and go, then thwart and cart.
Come, come, I've hardly made a start.

A dreadful language? Why, man alive,
I'd learned to talk it when I was five.
And yet to read it, the more I tried,
I hadn't learned it at fifty-five.

That probly seemed like good advice to you when you said it, but won
thing you didn't take into consideration, is that I ALREADY SPEAK
ENGLISH!!! I am not a foreigner; I was born and raised here in
America...and I still somehow spell that badly. Boy don't I feel dumn
now?

Actually, Wavy, if you knew those involved, you would know they really
ARE just trying to be helpful. But now that the point's been made,
they won't hammer you about it or anything. No one here is mean -
we're just all a little "entertaining" and, thankfully, all completely
different, yet somehow manage to carry on a sort of "town" that, if it
existed in real life, you would find me packing up and moving to (and
yes, that grammar just sucked).

This is no joke. What I find incredible is that anyone could consider
anything having to do with Ramen Noodles "URGENT"!

What I find even more incredible is that Elizabeth Prungle and Heather
Spyker actually took the time to write a book about Ramen Noodles, entitled
_The Top Ramen Noodle Cookbook_.

Eastbound and down, loaded up and truckin', we're gonna do what they say
can't be done. We got a long way to go, and a short time to get there.
I'm eastbound, just watch ol' "Wayne Boatwright" run.

****EXCITING NEWS***&****

I made Ramen noodles TWICE today--both times, with my own unique
"twist," based on a combiniation of my own ideas, and some things I have
read on "websites" and whatnot.

Who can guess the TWO different ways I made Ramen noodles today? First,
I'll give you a hint: I followed the standard recipe, (using "Katra's"
method, thanks, "Katra"!), and I added just won additional ingredient,
each time. The mystery is: what was the secret ingredient???

I'll give you all until daybreak to formulate your answers. (Don't
worry. I don't get up until Noon or so.)

The little flavor packet?

Garlic powder?

(I still think it was pepper and you just won't admit that I got it
right so quickly.)

If you want incredible, a friend of mine gave me a link to an MRE
cookbook when he got back from Afghanistan. However, it's not nearly
as creative as what they came up with in the field. <looking like mad
for the link>

If there's a restaurant devoted to a variety of cooking, of course there
will be cookbooks associated with it.

But... wavyg... weren't you the guy just insulting anime? intentionally?

Try watching Kodomo no Omocha, they've got some wonderful recipes for
ramen in that show :-)

Lena

it's a good show too, about children, but very very deep.

Hmm, no don't recall ever insulting anime--intentionally or otherwise.
If you could explain what you're talking about, maybe I could help you.

I saw you on RAAM (crossposted intentionally). Anyway, some _real_ ramen
recipes generally use real ramen, not the maruchan equivalent.

(inviting friends on RAAM to contribute ramen recipes)

(Reminding Lena that RAAM pretty much scraped him off for good after the
first failed attempt)
