Management and jobs where I worked as hourly. I also had my own
business and no employee was ever allowed to smoke except on certified
breaks.

Could be one of the reasons that nursing home care is so abysmal in

This how we handled it. I was the manager and had 2 smokers and 3
non-smokers working on our team. We had no set tea breaks, smoke
breaks, and lunch breaks were done in shifts (cos of the nature of the
work). We had a general team meeting and it was decided that we smokers
would take smoke breaks and/or tea breaks, when we could. The
non-smokers in return, were allowed to take extra tea breaks (or
whatever they wanted do in 10 minutes) whenever they could, to balance
it out. It worked very well and the non-smokers were quite happy with
the arrangement. We all covered for eachother no matter who was taking
a break and we all had the same amount of breaks. Fair is fair.

Bwahahahahaha Like I said, can't stand the truth. They do need to pay
better but they might be able to if they actually hired qualified
people instead of so much of the trash they do, along with illegals.

No, that is because no one wants to pay what it takes to get great
nursing home care. Patients can't, their families can't or won't and the
government doesn't reimburse what it takes to cover all that is demanded.

Just came out of your hole long enough to be idiotic, crude and
insulting, eh? You're pathetic - and illogical, BTW - can't you read?
Instead of taking breaks away from patients they grabbed a quick 5
puffs and went back to work. Not far from the home yourself, I
assume.

I'm guessing your management style led to the hourly work.

No, your *truth* doesn't hurt. What hurts is putting 40 people to bed by
myself because there is no one to help me that night. Or doing post mortems
on 3 people in one night. Or watching a woman bleed out rectally because
her family has decided to let her go and not send her to the hospital. And
then have to hear bullshit from a lousy bottomfeeder like you about how
trashy and unqualified I am. Honey, you better pray that when you need a
nursing home, you end up with someone as unqualified and trashy as me.
There aren't many people in this world who will change your diaper, spoon
feed you, dress you, and give you a complete bed bath while smiling and
treating you with the courtesy and respect any human deserves, even offal
like yourself.

Lynne, it was personnel such as yourself who made my father's passing
in a hospice less of a misery than it could have been. I thanked the
employees at the time who had my father's care (and a whomping big
batch of homemade beignets), but for all those for whom you have cared
and not been thanked, I can only pass on what my mother used to say:
it's another star in your crown. Bless you for taking on a job that
takes such special talent, patience and skill.

As for GQ? Consider the source.

You are so stupid you don't even know the difference between a Hospice

Just curious - if you are accomplished enough to manage your own
business, then why don't you apply those same skills to the more
social aspects. Why do you find it necessary to bulldoze rudely into
what is probably the nicest and overall more intelligent groups in
Usenet? You might find that people would get along with you quite
nicely. And you might actually enjoy yourself. Maybe you've noticed
lately - food is not always the main topic, however it IS
_rec.food.cooking_ eh?

Are you talking about people who are misrepresenting their knowledge of
cooking, or of social and political issues? If it's the latter, why not
fire up your killfiles and only read about cooking? I'm willing to bet
there are newsgroups concerning non-cooking issues if you're really
interested in those.

(I have a lot of filters in place that prevent most religious, political,
and racially-based threads from reaching my eyes. Works wonders!)

Look, GQ, I'm not questioning your abilities - and you can be proud
that you've done well. But if you don't have time to play around,
then why did you burst through the door like Hyacinth Bucket
(Boo-kay), look down your nose and, BTW, still continue "playing
around" hours later? What I really don't understand is why we're
continuing these discussions - bored I guess <G>.

Lynne, don't listen to GQ. IMHO nursing staff fall under the category
"overworked, underpaid and unappreciated". I have only been in hospital
3 times, once for an appendix op and twice for the birth of my kids.
Even on those few occasions I have watched how hard you guys work. It
must be 10 times more work with more serious cases. It takes dedication
and caring to be a nurse. You don't have to defend that. Keep up the
good work. And thanks to you all.
Cheers

At any rate, regardless of why GQ is here, Hyacinth makes me laugh.
Talk about a funny show! I've never seen her cook though. One would
think she could put on quite a splash of a party. I'd be curious as to
what she thinks would be suitable eats of a party of any kind.

Funny you should say that. If I had to be sent to an island with only
one show to watch, it would be KUA. I am in the middle of hunting
down the ones I have on VHS to transfer to DVD and so far I have 27 of
them. What's strange is that even though I have found a number of
sites with info enough to determine which season/show it is, no one
seems to agree on each episode's title. In fact, I'm not sure they
ever actually had titles. Happen to know any info?

Once again showing your ignorance, dear. Many, many nursing homes also
offer hospice care. We also offer rehab quite often. You'd be amazed at
what you obviously don't know about nursing homes.

Thank you Terry, it's very nice to hear that we are appreciated! Hospice is
especially difficult, but I think it was one of the most rewarding things I
ever did. I consider it an honor to be allowed to help people finish there
time here on earth with as much comfort and dignity as possible. As far as
the source, I know, I know, but it's really a hot button for me-someone so
obviously superiour to me should have some idea what a hard job it is, you'd
think! Ahh, well-I just have to remember that there really are not that
many people who look down their noses at aides. And damned few once it's
them or their family member in care!

Thank you Cathy, and I do know to ignore people like GQ, but sometimes my
temper gets the better o'me!LOL It's hard work for sure, but you don't get
many opportunities in life to make such a major difference in someone's
life, which is why I keep going back for more. I go back to work this fall,
and I'm really looking forward to doing the work again (but NOT to dealing
with the BS Admin always comes up with<G>)

Ain't that the truth, SF! And more and more true every year, with the worst
coming up in the next decade or so, as all the baby boomers reach that age.
We're gonna need at least 3x the nursing homes we have now to care for
everyone who needs it-her odds ain't good<G>

I've given up smacking meself on the head every time I lose the ole temper,
it was getting painful<GG>

No, my dear-thank you for seeing it! We all like to be appreciated for
sure.

Re the paperwork, that's a resounding yes!LMAO There's also this nasty
habit Admin has of promising you the moon while you work your 10th straight
shift in a row, and then conveniently forgetting once they are fully
staffed<SIGH>

Lynne,

I would also like to thank you and all the caring people who take on the
difficult task of working in hospice.

I was living with my grandmother during her last days. The level of
compassion my grandmother and family received was nothing short of amazing.
From the after-hours staff to our RN everyone was supportive, caring,
knowledgeable, and understanding. The aides were in a category of their own.
I do not have the words to express my gratitude to those wonderful women who
took care of my grandmother's everyday needs. Not only did they tend to my
grandmother, they also helped me beyond measure.

Thanks to hospice care my beloved grandmother was able to end her time here
on earth in the home she lived in for over 50 years, in the same bed she
shared with my grandfather, surrounded by her children and grandchildren. It
is a priceless gift that could not have been possible without the fine
people from the hospice.

Thank you for everything you do from my family and every family who is
blessed to have someone as compassionate as you to help them through such a
difficult time.

Kelly
