I was good at it for one year in junior high. I just happened to have a
teacher who was able to communicate in a way that I was able to learn. I
did well enough that year that I was tutoring half the other kids in class.
But that was my fifteen minutes of math fame.

I have to understand *why* math works. I know this probably sounds odd,
but I don't trust formulas and other "truths" at face value. I have to
work it all out the long way. I have yet to run across anyone else who has
a basic mistrust of math. LOL!

My dad and I used to drive each other insane. He was a mathematical genius
(helped his college professors figure out the things that they didn't
understand), and I was, literally, learning disabled in that area. Many,
many tears were shed at that kitchen table.

True. There's very little English humor that I find funny. I generally
"get" Monty Python, but many of the others leave me cold. I do have to
check into Black Adder. I want to see Hugh Laurie acting ridiculous.

Come on, *every* mathematician distrusts formulas, unless he is given
irrefutible proof that starts with 1=1, and leads to the formula in
question by applying previously proven theorems.

He taught you well. Don't trust the book, understand why the books says
it is this way. Regretfully science has progressed to a point where it
is virtually impossible for a single individual to know and _understand_
all that has been discovered. So 50% of science consists of knowing
which book (or whom in the newsgroup) to trust

Sure you do. You look down a street, both ways. If a car is waaaay
down the street, and moving at a certain speed, you may or may not
cross the street, depending on the distance and speed of said car.
You may not take pencil to paper, but your final decision is based on
basic mathmatical factors such as distance and speed. I bet you
didn't know you were so smart!

works - drives most people I know utterly nutz sometimes...
