Default Good news on wine

The Supreme Court has struck down laws that prohibit shipments from out of
state wineries.

Great News!

best Chardonnays and even Pinot Noirs!)

This may or may not be good news, depending on future actions by your
local state legislature. The way I read this, what this ruling says is
that a state may not discriminate by allowing intrastate shipments
while barring interstate ones. There would be two ways of complying:
by allowing shipments from out-of-state (the good news everybody seems
to be assuming) or by banning all wine shipments including from within
the state (not-so-good news).

Given the political muscle of in-state wineries I think (hope) that the
latter eventuality will not come to pass. Unfortunately it does not, AFAIK,
apply to shipments from out of state distributors which are, at least here
in NC, the only way to get many unusual wines from overseas.

Not to mention Bully Hill Winery's world famous Love My Goat wines.
Hard to believe old Walter (Taylor, black sheep of the Taylor Wine
family) has been gone over 10 years now. He was quite a character.

Hi Cindy!

Love My Goat was my first red, er well sorta red wine that I could drink.
Usually after the first or 2nd winery on a wine tour, I don't really
remember where I've been or where I'm going! (Don't worry, I'm not driving)

Not quite. What the ruling said was that restrictions could not be put
into place that are intended only to give in-state wineries a
competitive advantage over out-of-state wineries.

Before you get in too much of a celebratory mood, really consider what the
Court said. They merely said all this variation on the law around the
country is wrong. OTOH, they did make a ruling which clearly states that
they can make a universal law which bars all shipments, period. That is ok
under their ruling.
