Default Dragon claw soup ;-d

This came out better than I anticipated.
I went to the Mexican market in Austin today and nabbed 3 one lb.
packages of chicken feet.

Placed 1 lb. of chicken feet into the pressure cooker on top of a
steamer insert and sprinkled them liberally with salt free lemon pepper
and garlic powder, then added a dash of white pepper powder. Added 12
large dried Shitake mushrooms then added enough water to cover them.

I put the other 2 lbs. away in the freezer for later.
_Nothing_ makes a richer chicken stock/broth than feet!

Brought up to pressure then turned to low (#2 setting on my glass top
stove) and pressured for 45 minutes.

Turned it off and let the pressure come down, then removed the mushrooms
to one bowl to cool and the chicken feet to a separate bowl to enjoy
later in private. <G>

I use the steamer insert to make it easier to catch any bones that I may
have missed. This created a beautiful dark colored, richly flavored
chicken and shitake mushroom broth.

Once the mushrooms had cooled, I removed the stems (discard the stems,
they are way too tough to do _anything_ with) then sliced the mushrooms
thin.

Took one large purple onion and chopped it up. I put the onion and
sliced mushrooms into the cast iron skillet with EVOO and butter, and
just a dash of sesame oil. Sauteed and added more lemon pepper, garlic
powder, fresh grated ginger and a teensy bit of soy sauce. At one point,
I added one cup of the prepared broth to the pan, covered and let cook
for a bit since some of the mushrooms really had not hydrated enough yet.

Note, feel free to use 2 to 3 grated or minced cloves of fresh garlic in
place of the garlic powder. I personally have problems with fresh garlic
so no longer use it even tho' I really do like it.

Once the onions were clear, I added that mess back to the broth in the
pressure cooker, brought up to a boil and added 6 sheets of thinly
sliced Nori. I usually just cut Nori with a pair of scissors.

Once it was boiling well, I slowly stirred in 1 dozen well whipped fresh
eggs to make an "egg drop" effect.

I did not eat much of the soup even tho' it was fabulous. I retired to
my bedroom with a small bone bowl and ate the chicken feet with a little
salt. <G>

Dad cannot handle that so I eat them in private...

All that fecal matter, perhaps?

Seriously, I'm with Papa. No feets in my soup! I just can't get past
the psychology of eating the feet of something.

This seems like the moment to mention a bowl of feijoada (sp?) in which my
daughter swears she found a pig's foot WITH TOENAILS!

<grins> Chicken feet are cleaned and skinned. :-)
No fecal matter in my soup!

I know some folks can't handle chicken feet, but it's amazing what you
learn to eat in early childhood... My mom taught me to eat chicken feet
so they hold a lot of good memories.

And they are FAR superior to trotters in flavor and texture.

But now I'm not sleepy enough to be creative. ;-)

So, what did y'all think of the rest of the soup recipe?

I made it up as I went along... Now that I'm getting used to using dried
shitake's, I'll probably be using them a lot more! They are delicious
and about 1/5th the price of fresh ones. Much better than canned
mushrooms too, altho' I've never seen canned shitake's.

Tonight I'm doing a garlic stab pot roast on a small pork butt with
veggies. Yams, carrots, onions, mushrooms, celery and maybe some bok
choy. I'll stuff fresh garlic slivers into the stabs in the roast and
top with fresh herbs again. It's my favorite way to do fresh pork.

I'll be making some pickled eggs with beet juice this afternoon as well
so will probably throw the canned beet slices into the veggie mix. I'm
not personally very fond of beets, but dad loves them and has requested
I add them. :-) He'll get them all to himself! <lol>

He's off to the store to get the yams and a few other things, along with
some claussen pickles. I'll use the pickle juice mixed with canned beet
juice to do the eggs. I need to get out to the kitchen and get cooking
as it's getting rather late. I've been seriously sleep deprived for the
past month so slept for nearly 14 hours. :-P Midnight last night 'till 2
pm today. I hate wasting that time but I guess I needed it.

5 mg. of Melatonin really did it's thing!

Yeah, you showed me! I was so glad it was just past twilight when the baby
alien hands were served (2003 cook-in). It was bad enough looking at them
in the dark. LOL!

But a good time was had by all! My memories from it are still so vivid that
it's had to believe it was two years ago; meaning, it seems like it was only
last month... sucks to be getting old, ya know.

Bah, ya swine - me, ~6 hours in 3 days, such a MESS yesterday, had to turn
back part way to work, shaking, aching, arggghhh - I was in tears!!! Got
some OTC stuff from the chemists (diphenhydramine) that helped me get around
4 hours last night, but I am still so bloody wiped out, stiff neck from not
having the energy to hole my head up right...

One good thing from the w/e though - the osteopath on Saturday was
brilliant - he found two locked vertebrae right near the bottom of my back
(where most of the trouble has been), freed them up and I felt so good
walking to the bus after I was swing off lamp posts - I'd forgotten what it
*should* feel like! I got hip and arse movement back again LOL!

He found one rotated vertebra too, further up (may be related to the other
prob.), managed to get it a bit better, but I have to go back next
Wednesday. Oh, since then I've found another rotated one in my neck, which
he'll hopefully be able to start working on too. He was a great guy to chat
with, understood everything I explained to him, his logic flowed the same as
mine (he agreed with me LOL!) - just an all round good experience! Just
concerned with how many times I'm gonna have to come up with the cash to get
this sorted now - it ain't cheap, and I'm skint too. What price health
though eh?

Actually only slept for about 12 hours straight...
The last two hours was napping. ;-)

I must confess tho' that part of that was Amphetamine withdrawl. That
WILL make you sleep! I don't take my Adderall on my days off.
Withdrawing from it has a hell of a rebound. That's the main reason I
DON'T take it when I'm not working.

It has it's pro's and con's!

If you want a good OTC sleep aid, try Dramamine (Meclazine). Knocks me
on my tail! I can't even drive if I use it for nausea.....

I know the feeling. ;-P
This last fight with weight loss has not been cheap, even with insurance.

But at least it's working. :-) Finally broke that damned plateu I've

Oh fcough!

> The last two hours was napping. ;-)

NAPPING?!? NAPPING?!? I couldn't even *relax* in the slightest all the while
I was tired as hell - that's what makes it worse than just lack of sleep
when I get like this - I don't sleep, but I stay totally wired with brain
full-on in the mean time, so I get totally, utterly, mentally worn out, but
STILL cannot get any sleep. Only thing is to knock myself out a couple
nights on the run to flip that nasty old switch back into the right
position. Sometimes, I've had to take 4 times the prescribed pills to achive
THAT FFS...

Yup - like anything. Glad you are being sensible and careful with it ',;~}~

I thought Dramamine was diphenhydramine (antihystamine with sedative action)
HCL, like what I had? (Google says 'yup'?!?) The stuff works, some, but
while I'm laid down I feel quite awake on it, stand up and the world,
starting with my knees, turns tpo jelly though! made going for a **** last
night quite a job I can tell ya...

Quite, yes. Often they'll use accupuncture as part of the treatment too, but
not on me, least yet...

<grins> It's not been normal in the past.
Normally during the week I can only sleep 6 hours max...
It's on my days off when I quit taking the prescription
that I can sleep for years...

To me, it's a bit of a waste of time, but I guess I need it.

I don't really like stimulants, but am trusting the doctor on this one.

No no NO!!!

Dramamine is not Meclizine. That was an error. That is generic
Antivert...

Dramamine is Dimenhydrinate. An anti-nausea medication not really an
antihistimine. Diphenhydramine is generic Benadryl. An antihistamine.
That does not work all that well for a sleep aid.

Motion sickness pills or anti-nausea pills have a real sedative effect.
It's sold OTC for car sickness or sea sickness.

The drug used in hospitals is Phenargan. I had some IV when I had that
Salmonella infection in the ER. Combined with a little IV Demerol,
knocked me right out and killed the gut cramps and nausea.

IV Demerol is nice. ;-)
I felt it hit shortly after they injected it into the IV lock.
Nice buzz!

Heh, well normally I *can* sleep midweek, but at the w/e's, I wake up at ~7
a.m. and that's it - buggrit!

If it helps t helps, if it don't, it errrmmm, don't, heheheheh...

I actually looked further and read a good deal - Dramamine *2* is indeed
meclizine, the original as you say below, dimenhydranate (these two were
made to replace diphenhydramine for various applications, and are very
similar molecules).

> Dramamine is Dimenhydrinate. An anti-nausea medication not really an

They are all antihystamines with anticholinergic as well as sedative action,
the meclazine and the dimenhydranate suppsed to have less of the
anitcholinergic effect or summink...

> That does not work all that well for a sleep aid.

It's what's used in Nytol Max Strength and many generic equivs.

> Motion sickness pills or anti-nausea pills have a real sedative effect.

Diphenhydramine is too - as I said, they are much more than similar drugs.
Dimenhydranate *is* basically diphenhydramine with extra atoms in the
molecule making it heavier, slower to absorb - the molecule virtually breaks
down in the digestive systme into dphenhydramine, so 50mg /inate has the
same action and strength as 25mg /amine, according to erowid, and a health
and prescription drug info site. WEIRD!

What's the chemcal name/family? They gave me all sorts to knock me out when
I had that smashed leg, pills galore, and if they didn't work (sometimes
they would just make me totally wasted, but the pain would stop me from
dozing) they'd get someone to come give me a shot (always worked!)
