Default And it's outta' here ...

I hit a home run w/ dinner last night.
Thanks all to the positive responses to my sick of cooking thread.
Last nights dinner consisted of a nice, simple red leaf salad topped w/ home
made oil and vinegar dressing made w/ spiced rice vinegar, a glug of sesame
oil, EVOO, dash of soy sauce, and assorted spices. YUM.
From the back yard grill, NYStrips lightly marinated in a little EVOO, soy
sauce and a dash of pepper.
My first California rolls. My husband really liked them, my kids didn't at
all, (fine w/ me, they did try them) and I wasn't impressed w/ the Nori, the
Nori was way to fishy tasting for me. I don't know if there is another
brand that I can try (bought these at an Asian market) But I didn't care
for it. However they were BEAUTIFUL! I have to say I was rather impressed
w/ myself ... they could have been on a food show! The Sushi rice was
perfect.
Also from the grill, sliced fresh pineapple omg .. it was to DIE for .... I
think I could have eaten it all myself.
For desert, sliced fresh strawberries, fresh pineapple and banana topped w/
a bit of cream. I did make shortbread, however I was so busy w/ the grill I
forgot it in the oven and the shortbread ended up way to hard. It wasn't
missed at all though, the fruit and cream was a perfect ending to a very
filling meal.

Breakfast was whole wheat banana pancakes served w/ left over fruit from the
dinner before.

I'm also checking out replacing the sink, yes, I know a faucet was suggested
but a nice sink is in order ... but then, how do I stop? I need a new
counter as well ... and if I'm going to put in a new counter, I may as well
do the back splash, a new back splash calls for me to strip the wallpaper
and paint ...

the next time you are in an asian market, see if they have pumpkin
flour. you can substitute it for a quarter or a third or so of recipes
like pancakes and quick breads (im sure you oculd use it in yeasted
breads, too, but im no maven on that ) i make pie crusts with it
sometimes, and it worked really nice for a chess pie (thanks, Wayne,
BTW, for that recipe! hubby loved it :>)

Why, oh why, didn't you invite us over for dinner? I'm salivating into my
keyboard again (Pavlovian response to food porn). It all sounds fabulous!

Sounds like you're going to have a great time tearing your kitchen apart
and putting it back together again.

The last house I did the upgrade thing in was less than perfect.
Everything I tried to do cost $10K. Everything. And I was doing it
on the cheap. The upside was that when I sold it I got a nice tax
write off. It made the difference between owing the IRS money and
getting a refund.

Your dinner sounds very good. If the nori was too fishy, it may be
the way it's always going to be. OTOH, did you toast it before
rolling?

Grilled pineapple is a sure winner. Makes a good salsa with some
chiles, onion, cilantro, olive oil, lime juice, salt, etc. BTW.

Trust me, a new faucet does the trick. We finally replaced ours today
(after nursing/fixing it for ages) and it feels like a new kitchen....

Cheers

Doesn't make much sense putting a new faucet on a crappy old sink...
besides it's a whole lot easier attaching a faucet before the sink is
installed, and in many cases the sink needs to be removed to install a
new faucet so may as well do both. Installing a new faucet on a beat
up old sink is like putting on fresh lingerie and getting into a clean
bed after working all day in the garden and not bathing first... means
you're an Italian, earthy. hehe
