Looking for some help on the edibility of the seeds of the silver maple tree
(Acer saccharinum) - or any other maple variety. The reason for asking is that the silver maple in my back yard has dropped an amazing number of "keys" this year. Literally buckets of them. It is very easy to release the seed from the husk and you get a fat little greenish nugget about the size of a small pine nut. The local squirrels love them. Does anyone know if they are safe to eat. How would you treat them? When I sampled one they certainly didn't taste bad, just sort of "green". I was thinking, if they are safe, perhaps they could be roasted and used like a pine nut. Any ideas? BeeCee |
