Default Candy Bars of the Past

I just picked up a book called "Candyfreak" by Steve Almond, and he mentions
some of his favorite candy bars which have been discontinued. I can think of
two that do not exist anymo Mallow Cups and Clark Bars. Anyone else have
favorite candy bars which are now resting in peace? By the way the book is a
great read.

I sometimes find them along with Zagnut bars at the dollar store.

For those that have never seen them, a Zagnut is like a Clark bar but
toasted coconut instead of chocolate.

I still see Mallo cups around, and Smoothies also.

I grew up in Pittsburgh as a kid and every year it seemed our school field trip
would be to go to the Clark Bar factory in the morning and the nearby Heinz
plant in the afternoon.

When very young my favorite was Walnut Grove.

On 5/2/2004 6:43 AM Ted shuffled out of his cave and grunted these great
(and sometimes not so great) words of knowledge:

Nesco SkyBar. They still exist, but are next to impossible to find. I
FINALLY found a local store that still stocks them (at least for now).
The owner did tell me that sales for this candy bar are "very minimal"
and the ONLY reason he stocks it is because he likes them.

I used to love them as a kid. Got some recently and
they really suck. Bummer.

Treasures? A bar, similar to Caramilk, with each differently shaped
section containing a different filling.

Either it was made by Cadbury, or Cadbury made a similar product. Yes, it
was a 'rip' of the Mars bar.

Mars Bar is not at all like Treasures. They had six different fillings, and
IIRC had maraschino cherry, strawberry cream, vanilla cream, a caramel, solid
chocolate and one other.

Not unless Mars in the US is totally different from Mars in Canada or
they've undergone a dramatic change since I last ate one, but the Mars I
remember was a solid bar of chocolate nougat with a thin layer of thick
caramel covered with chocolate. It was nothing like the Treasures bar.

I remember them. They were from Cadburys. We used to get Cadbury's
chocolate milk powder and they had miniature samples in them. Each little
sample bar had a different letter printed on it and if you saved up enough
to spell Cadbury you could send them in and get a box of chocolate bars.

I remember the Cadbury powder with the mini bars. We used to get that
rather than Quik. With 3 kids in the family it was always a fight to get
the mini bar. I never drank milk so don't know what the powder was like.

treasures sounds like the candy I remember as Sky Bar.
It was divided into four (I think) sections and each
had a different filling. I think chocolate fudge, mint,
caramel...can't remember the fourth.

SKYBAR! That's what I meant when we were talking about Mars Bars!

Never heard of that one. What was it like?

Could it have been Walnettos?

It was the standard 'Snickers' size, walnut flavored nougat, chocolate
covered.

I wish they'd have a description of the product -- not to mention the fact
that it's not available until November 2004. I remember them made by
Cadbury.

If that is the Nestle Treasures they don't have the same fillings that the
Treasures I remember. The shape is totally different. Each filling had
it's own distinctly shaped section of the bar.

That sounds like a "7-Up" bar.

Oh, now you've done it! I loved 7-Up bars as a kid. My mom and I
would sit on the front porch and enjoy these. Those were good times -
I'd love to give mom one in her Mother's Day basket, but I understand
they aren't available anywhere! Thanks for bringing up fun memories!

Not bars, but candy nonetheless.

Various flavors of Life Savers that no longer exist, particularly
butterscotch. (Butter Rum is different).

Also Choc-o-Mint. That one was delicious.

How about fondly-remembered cookies that no longer exist?

I particularly miss FFV orange and lemon thins. They had a browned edge, and
they were scrumptious.

Oh, yes. I too miss orange thins. They're about the only
cookie I can think of where that perfectly round professional
looking shape makes them more appealing to me than a homemade
cookie with all its wonderful ragged edges.

My favorite candy bar as a kid was the Marathon bar, which was a foot long and
thin and it was braided caramel and chocolate covered. I wish they still made
those.

It's not a candy bar but Black Jack licorice gum was a favorite of mine. Also
the Teaberry gum I miss.
