Default today's dinner will be

* Tilapia, either sesame-crusted, or just marinated in soy and ginger
* Sushi rice balls (bet you didn't know sushi rice *had* balls), rolled
in sesame and seaweed unless the fish is sesame-crusted, otherwise plain
* cucumber salad with rice vinegar and sugar for the dressing

We came home to a message from the guest, saying she's bringing greek
yogurt and honey for dessert, so that'll be an interesting addition.

We sprung SO's mom from her apartment and brought her here for dinner:

paella with shrimp, mussels, squid, and black cod
green salad

With heat like that, why did you need a grill? :-)

I think I'm going to put a cast-iron skillet out on my patio sometime soon,
to see how hot it can get under direct sunlight. (Too bad I don't have one
of those nifty laser thermometers like Alton Brown!) I'm *sure* I could get
it hot enough to cook an egg, but I wonder if I can get it hot enough to
make shabu-shabu.

LOL! I do know that whole eggs, if left outside all day in direct sun on a
dark background, will end up "hard boiled". Don't ask how I know! :-)

Shabu-shabu? Probably not. Too much temperature drop in the broth as bits
of food are added. :-)

Got me thinking now...how about a succession of skillets, each retaining a
goodly amount of thermal energy from being in the sun all day? (That's one
reason I mentioned cast iron in particular; the temperature drop shouldn't
be all that great because of the pan's ability to retain heat.) It really
doesn't take much to cook the shabu-shabu meat all the way through. I'll
try it and report my results.

Added some store-bought potstickers. Had the fish just marinated, and
the balls in sesame/seaweed.

Mmm, watermelon. We should have some at our next barbecue.

Try your rice balls with furikake! It's seaweed, seasonings and sesame, I
think sesame. It's also good on popcorn.

Good Lord, Wayne-I thought it was bad here yesterday! Sorry dear, but
better thee than me!LOL Dinner sounds good though-we had tacos, and will
have hot wings and *something* tonight since it's now cool enough to run the
oven.
