Honestly, I've never heard of that practice with salsa and
have never ever considered freezing it!

I'm completely agast! You sounded like someone who lives
far from the W. Coast. Why buy bottled when you can buy
premade fresh salsa in every grocery store every day?

A lot of people here don't have a choice between fresh and
bottled on a daily basis either.

I meant I've never considered it.

I also thought that if you made or bought it fresh, you'd
never go back to bottled. Obviously, I was wrong.

Because, quite frankly, Herdez is better than all of the "fresh" salsas
around here.

There is a salsa thet is made here in metro Detroit that has won national
competitions. I think it is called :"Jack's special" or something. VERY
good. I am not sure where it is available though.

I bought some yesterday because of this thread and we were
not impressed with the bottled salsa. It was tomato-ey
and bland (in the "medium" strength.)

I'll have to agree with Gloria. Because of this thread, I picked up the Hot
bottle of the red salsa and the medium bottle of the salsa verde. Out of
the six of us that tried it, only one thought the red was Okay. None of us
liked the green and the "hot" red was sad. I thought hot was supposed to
mean spicy hot but I've had hotter bell peppers.

Bottom line, sad to say, besides homemade, Pace was preferable.

Sorry, just my (collectively mine and friends) opinion.

It doesn't matter where you make it.

It matters how you make it.

Aha--I was going to mention that we like Pace better but I
was afraid of getting flamed from here to eternity.

if i'm remembering right, Herdez has a big line of canned sauces (etc.) that
are popular in the local hispanic markets. i think their small pop-top cans
of salsa aren't bad ... and a smaller amount to worry about once open.

I think they are better know for their "other" products (not
salsa). Aren't they the ones who can chipotle peppers?
Can't say I like their chipotles either... the smoke is
overpowering and I happen to like a lot of smoke in almost
everything that requires it.

A year or so ago, for a few months,Rotel was making what seemed the best
commercial salsa. The veggies were crisp and fresh-tasting and the spice
was just right: mild, medium and hot. Then their salsa sagged, tasting sort
of gloppy and now it's not on the shelves anymore.

Herdez is what I buy now. It's more liquid than most other brands, but that
works well for me.
