Default Gross foods you loved as a kid

When I was a kid, I just loved Vienna Sausages--would eat them right
out of the can. Couldn't get enough of them.

One day, several years ago, I was feeling nostalgic, and decided to buy
a can of these little weenies as a treat--only to discover that they
are god-awful horrible. Worse than bologna ever thought of being.

Any of you had a childhood food fav that makes you wretch today?

Fish sticks. Either they got less fish and more grease or I loved breading
and grease as a kid.

Instant mashed potatoes - mix them up, leaving out the butter called
for in the directions. Add to them, a smallish container of whipped
cream cheese with chives (or any flavor you like); a little bit of
parsley flakes, one well-beaten egg and some minced garlic. Put into a
greased casserole dish - dot the top with a couple T. of butter and
sprinkle with paprika - bake for 30 minutes or until golden brown on
top. YUMMY.

N. (I don't like them just plain, either, but they are perfect for this
recipe.)

Pancakes, smeared with mayoniase and sprinkled with sugar. I always
thought my grandmother taught me that, but she later vehemently denied it.

Canned peas. I cannot explain it, but I used to love them. Now I can't
stand them. Now I have a related problem : where I used to live, I
could find packages of fresh peas in the produce section, but none of
the local supermarkets seem to carry them. Frozen peas are ok, but the
fresh ones were something else. They also work better in a few curries
I make since they don't get soggy as quick.

Mom would cook some plain white rice and add butter. She'd serve it to me on
a plate along with some canned tuna. I'd mix the tuna and rice together and
eat it with yellow French's mustard. I loved it - then!

A childhood friend would take a cold hot dog right out of the package, dip
it in mayo, and chow down. Even as a kid I thought that was gross.

Have you ever tried spreading KFC mashed potatoes and gravy over their
biscuits? I loved this as a kid, and still do! But I don't think I
could handle mashed potatoes on toast.....r3

Wish I'd had the opportunity but my folks didn't allow fast food unless
we were on a "national lampoon" vacation.

I never ate canned spaghetti, didn't like even back then. If given it,
I'd eat canned ravioli even though I don't buy myself anymore.

I still like popsicles. Especially root beer and banana.

I used to like bologna. I haven't eaten it since July 1964. I'll never eat
it again. Also I will never eat Vienna sausages in a can, nor Deviled Ham,
nor any other luncheon meat, especially the kind with little green and red
bell peppers in them. I would throw them all up soonest.

I didn't really care for the "traditional" flavors, grape, cherry and
orange. I liked (and still do) lemon and lime in addition to the ones I
mentioned above.

I bought some sugar-free popsicles recently, they weren't too bad. I
was surprised. I guess it helps to drink diet soda.

I don't do grape or orange, but I *would* eat cherry popsicles. I miss
Hawaiian "Shave Ice". Basically a snow cone, but all the different flavors
were awesome! My favorite of that was blue vanilla or pina colada.

They have that around here (WA) at fairs and similar gatherings:

I like it much better than snow cones, as the ice is softer. Blue
Raspberry is my favorite...

Campbell's Cream of Mushroom Soup, cold and undiluted, straight from

Although I haven't made it in decades, it doesn't make me wretch today
(I should put it on my "to do" list and see if I still like it - or
not).... peanut butter and dill pickle sandwich.

Mmm, great stuff. I first discovered these on Kauai.

I can't find the real stuff here, though. There are places
that claim to have shave ice, but they don't have the right
flavors. They've got mainland flavors, like cola, and cherry,
and root beer, and bubble gum... Real shave ice has tropical
fruit flavors, guava, banana, passion fruit, mango, papaya.
